Description : Already in the year 1000, the old chronicles refer to a donjon destined to watch over the valley of the Eau
Blanche. This will be the principle point around which the Castle of Chimay will be constructed. The donjon, with its
surbased vaults, is the most interesting architectural part. The façade still has scars from the slides supporting the
suspended bridge. The Guard Room has conserved its ancient vaults as well as an ornamental tiling made up out of 45 000
slates. The theatre, constructed in 1863, reminds us, by its decoration, of the one king Louis XV had built at the castle of
Fontainebleau. Every year the Prince and Princess of Chimay organise an International Baroque Chants Competition
(October) and a Baroque Music Festival (June) there.
Comment : The castle reserves its right to modify the schedules and prices at any time. Visit to the castle with Princess
Elisabeth of Chimay. From October to Easer: only by reservation. The visit includes the projection of the film "Chimay,
Thousand Years of History in the theatre of the Castle (18 min). Film in French-Dutch-English-German. Duration of visit,

Description : Still marked with medieval austerity, this historical monument keeps alive the memory of the big families
who lived here: the Lalaings, the Croÿs, the van der Burchs. Whilst the ground floor (dungeon, gothic chapel, ancient
kitchen, arms room) evokes the Middle Ages, the first floor calls back to mind the 17th century. The very varied collections
make the fortress an interesting museum.

EN. Duration of the visit: 1 h. In July and August: closed on Fridays (unless public holidays). Medieval animation all year

Description : A ravishing 18th century manor house, the Chateau d'Attre was built on the foundations of a mediaeval
fortress. The Archduchess Marie-Christine of Austria and her husband Albert de Saxe Teschen, governors of the southern
Netherlands, often stayed here. Combining French and Austrian styles, the chateau is set in a very fine 17 hectare estate
bordering on the Dendre. Both landscaped garden and forest park, it contains melancholy features such as the ruined
Belvedere tower, the 15th century dovecote, the hermitage, the Vignou tower, the Swiss chalet, the bath house etc., as
well as various constructions in the taste of the period such as "le Rocher", a 24 metre high artificial grotto surmounted by
a hunting platform built for the use of Marie-Christine and her husband.

Description : The Mariemont park, created in the 16th century by Marie of Hungary whose name it still bears, was
bought in the 19th century by an important dynasty of industrialists, the Warocqués. It is laid out in the English style, with
lawns, lakes and foliage, age-old trees and exotic species, and fine sculptures side by side with the ruins of Charles of
Lorraine's palace. Although nothing remains of the gardens of the past, few gardens have been so well restored and
modernised than this one, including old magnificent beeches, fir trees... Rhododendrons and azaleas brighten the park
during May, after which the super floral english garden takes over. The Mariemont Royal Museum, opened in 1975,
replaces the 19th century chateau which was destroyed by a fire in 1960.
