IB Chemistry HL – First Examinations 2009
TEACHERS: Mr. Jason Moulthrop (Jason.Moulthrop@tdsb.on.ca)
Mr. Andrew Lin (Andrew.Lin@tdsb.on.ca)
COURSE CODES: Year 1 – SCH3U7; Year 2 – SCH4U7 and SNC4M7
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Chemistry is an experimental science that combines academic study with the acquisition of practical and
investigational skills. It is called the central science, as chemical principles underpin both the physical
environment in which we live and all biological systems. Apart from being a subject worthy of study in
its own right, chemistry is a prerequisite for many other courses in higher education, such as medicine,
biological science and environmental science, and serves as useful preparation for employment. The IB
Diploma Programme Chemistry course includes the essential principles of the subject but also, through
selection of options, allows students some flexibility to tailor the course to meet their needs. The
course is available at the higher level (HL) only, and is therefore designed for students wishing to pursue
Sciences in their post-secondary education.

EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT:
Students will be required to write three, externally-assessed examinations at the end of Year 2 worth
76% of their final mark.
INTERNAL ASSESSMENT:
Students will perform a variety of laboratory work throughout the course worth 24% of their final mark.
There are five assessment criteria that are used to assess the work:
• Design—D
• Data collection and processing—DCP
• Conclusion and evaluation—CE
• Manipulative skills—MS
• Personal skills—PS
The first three criteria — D, DCP and CE — are each assessed twice.
The fourth criterion — MS — is assessed over the whole course.
The fifth criterion — PS — is assessed only once and this should be during the Group 4 project.
The maximum mark for each criterion is 6. The total mark for internal assessments is out of 48.
