In early June, the 2015 ParticipACTION Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and
Youth was released in concert with an evidence-informed Position Statement on Active
Outdoor Play, which takes a stand on outdoor and risky active play.
HERE’S WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY:
“Access to active play in nature and outdoors –with its
risks - is essential for healthy child development. We
recommend increasing children’s opportunities for selfdirected play outdoors in all settings: at home, at school,
in childcare, the community and nature.”
HERE’S WHAT THE EXPERTS FOUND:
• When kids are outside, they move more, sit less and play longer.
• When kids are closely supervised outside, they’re less active.
• The biggest risk: is keeping kids indoors.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
• Encourage kids to enjoy active outdoor play in all kinds of weather. Playing in the
snow can be fun too!
• Let kids learn a little responsibility while they explore their world.
• Allow kids to play and experience nature in their own way.
The Report Card provides a comprehensive yearly assessment of Canada’s “state of the
nation” when it comes to providing physical activity opportunities for children and youth.

playing outdoors with friends and family.
BUT, WHAT DO THE EXPERTS SAY?
Leading Canadian experts do not recommend active video games as a strategy to help kids
be more physically active.
• Playing active video games doesn’t lead to increased overall daily physical activity levels.
• Active video games may get heart rates up, but they’re not significantly helping kids get to
the 60 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity required each day.
• Kids find active video games appealing, but the appeal wears off over time and many
don’t stick with them.
• Active video games don’t offer the fresh air, vitamin D, connection with nature and social
interactions that come with outdoor active play.
