Confucius Institute - Valparaiso University FORTHCOMING EVENTS Chinese New Year Dinner Party February 14, 2010, Valentine’s Day, coincides with the Chinese Spring Festival this year. In honour of the Chinese New Year, the CIVU and the CJSP will host a Chinese New Year Dinner Party in the Harre Union Ballroom, VU, at 18:30-20:30, Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010. This celebration will feature a Chinese dinner with many tasty dishes, such as Gongbao chicken, vegetable delights, ribs, eggrolls, along with Chinese desserts, and the like. The evening’s program will include musical performances by the VU Concert Band, skits by MACS (Masters of Chinese Studies) students and Chinese students, prize drawings, and more. Spring 2010 Chinese Music Concert Tour Collaborating with more than 10 Confucius Institutes and schools in the US, the Confucius Institute at Valparaiso University is sponsoring the Spring 2010 Chinese Music Concert Tour featuring 4 guest soloists from China and the Chamber Concert Band conducted by VU’s Band Director Dr. Jeff Doebler. The program for the Concert Tour includes band arrangements of famous Chinese tunes as well as classics of American band music. It is our belief at the Confucius Institute at Valparaiso University that music is one of the most valuable tools in growing mutual understanding and respect among the nations and for fostering a deep appreciation of Chinese culture and language. Our approach is rooted in Confucian philosophy, in the belief that “Harmony is the most valuable of all things” and “Nothing is more effective than music in bringing harmony.” We look forward to advancing this perspective through our collaboration with our colleagues and music lovers in US, China and around the world. Chinese speech contest Valparaiso University Master of Arts in Chinese Studies Program (MACS) and Confucius Institute at Valparaiso University (CIVU) will hold Second Indiana-Illinois High School Chinese Speech Contest on April 11, 2010 (Sunday) from 1:00 to 5:00 PM in the Gold and Brown Room of Harre Union. 77 contestants from eight area high schools will compete for prizes at two different levels. Level I contest is for students with one or two years of high school Chinese studies. Contestants will perform short conversational dialogues in groups of two or three on topics related to everyday life. Level 2 contest is for students with more than two years of Chinese language study. Contestants will deliver individual speeches on the topic: "My study in Chinese in the US." The 8 participating high schools are: Benito Juarez Community Academy (IL) Brownsburg High School (IN) Culver Academy (IN) -1- Confucius Institute - Valparaiso University Illinois Math & Science Academy Lake Forest Academy (IL) Naperville North High School (IL) Northridge High School (IN) Rochester High School (IN) The organizer of the event is Dr. Benjamin Ridgway, Assistant professor of Chinese language and literature of MACS and Department of Foreign Languages and Literature of Valparaiso University.
