Salon des Refusés at ARTION GALLERIES, New York Source: ARTION Galleries, New York “Salon des Refusés,” curated by Michael Anderson November 19, 2013 through December 21st. ARTION Galleries is pleased to present the first group show in their New York location. Salon des Refusés is French for “Exhibition of Rejects,” originally referring to the Paris Salon of 1863. Normally, this would refer to any exhibition of works rejected from a juried art show. This group of “rejects, “ however, are exhibited and held together by the glue that is Michael Anderson. The event opens November 19, 2013 through December 21st. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The artist Aaron Johnson uses socks as brush strokes in his wild and comedic portraits. These old, used, personal items become the material for his sculptural paintings. Debra Hampton ‘s meticulously cut magazine collage create fantastical, invented, compositions, using fractions of ads with open, incomplete backgrounds. Her work illustrates a command of modern feminine empowerment. Noah Becker uses the intersection of contemporary ideas and classical portraiture to produce his strange humored and well executed paintings. Jessica Speckhard’s collage aesthetic is brought together through digital manipulation to illustrate her contemporary, internal landscape. Alfred Steiner’s detailed watercolors are pieced together as a collage, using symbols, mascots, brands and the pornographic detritus of society as a kind of abstraction to personify other known icons, in composite. Tom Sanford’s paintings utilize the recording of contemporary historical events, concurrent with this time, by means of grotesque, cartoonish satire. Michael Anderson’s collages use international street posters, in wide combination and fragmentation, to illustrate post-‐modern society through dark humor. This Salon des Refusés, curated by artist Michael Anderson at ARTION Galleries, brings together a group of New York artists and longtime friends who produce uncomfortable work that is both beautiful and stimulating. ARTION Galleries is located at 275 Water Street in Lower Manhattan. The exhibition will be open Tuesday-‐ Saturday, 12-‐ 6 pm from November 19th-‐ December 21st, 2013. ************ ARTION Galleries, with locations in Geneva Switzerland, Doha, Qatar and Thessaloniki, Greece, is proud to present this inaugural group exhibition of promising American artists in their New York location.
