October 12, 2011 In This Issue Featured Stories Help a Family Rocked by a Horrific Crime Families in Need Disaster Response This past weekend a young pregnant mother and her unborn child Ministry Needs were killed in a brutal and unimaginable attack. The victim, Maritza Mission Opportunities Ramirez-Cruz, has a daughter attending St. Martini Lutheran International Ministry School in Milwaukee. Krista Parker nee Mayyou (pictured), who LCC Ministry Resources grew up at and whose family still attends Immanuel Palatine, is a Tim's Pick of the Week teacher at St. Martini and sent this appeal to LCC... Upcoming Events How To Keep LCC Serving "My name is Krista Parker and I am the 5th grade teacher at St. Martini Lutheran School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Our St. Martini family has been rocked by a terrible tragedy this past weekend. The mother of one of our K4 students (Ashley) was brutally murdered over the weekend. Maritza Ramirez-Cruz was around 8 months pregnant. A woman by the name of Annette Morales-Rodriguez offered to give Maritza a ride home. Annette then beat Maritza, and cut the fetus from her uterus... Ashley's family is devastated by this horrible act. They have no money for food, rent, or to get to Puerto Rico to give their mother and still born sibling a proper burial. We on behalf of the family are asking for any donations possible: money, gift cards for food or clothing, Walgreen's gift cards, or anything possible to help this family with their needs. I know this is very short notice, but the sooner we could get these donations, the better for the family. Any help will be greatly appreciated." Tim's Pick of the Week LCC has established a fund and all donations will go dollar for dollar to St. Martini to help during this most difficult time. Click here to donate and thank you for sharing the mercy and compassion of Christ with Maritza's family. Literally translated, the street fairs are Christ-child markets. They happen in nearly every city and village, large and small. They are always cause for celebration and for shopping, for some roasted sausage, music on the streets and the insides of centuries-old churches, and, of course, some hot, spiced wine. Let this be an invitation to focus on Advent and the Coming of Christ in bringing in the Christmas Season. Martin Luther School Principal Jeremy Schamber Reports Latest from Joplin Two people I've met recently are emblematic of the ongoing recovery in Joplin. Kevin was at the edge of the storm and his house was heavily damaged but not destroyed. He has neighbors still living with him who lost everything. Emily lost her home completely and what's left must be torn down. Her husband took the insurance check and left for California without her. She's now left to rebuild her life on her own. Without specialized schooling outside of the inadequate public school system most poor children never get the chance for higher education which can lift their family out of poverty. The National Lutheran Church of Myanmar is trying to change this and needs your help to sponsor children in the 11th grade (the final step prior to University). Because of your generous donations two children have already received scholarships. LCC received the following email from Rev. Charles Edwards: Greetings from Myanmar. In our church there are many students but in grade 11 (entrance control by the government directly) there are 10 students. They are very clever but they are from the very poorest families. Their parents can not support them due to their poverty. Our church is trying to give scholarships but we are also facing and struggling for finical difficulties. Two months ago Lutheran Church Charities(LCC) gave scholarship to 2 students and they are now studying hard. Our church decided to send a prayer request to all our connections. Please pray for them. Our church believes that through your faithful prayers God will certainly help them in wonderful ways. Again, please pray for them. Blessings. Rev. LCMS World Relief and Human Care, along with Lutheran Church Charities, are trying to put a latrine and water filter system in each of our 82 Lutheran Schools in Haiti. Our first latrine has been completed and dedicated! It is touching to see such excitement in having a latrine! To dedicate it! It puts our situation in the US with our economic worries in perspective. Imagine not having any washroom facilities, which is the case for each of our Lutheran Schools in Haiti! To see their excitement to have a latrine! We will continue to build these for each of the schools as money comes in! Consider Making a Difference to a Lutheran School by providing a latrine! Only $500 to build. A water filter is only $185. Thank you to those who have donated so far to make this exciting event happen LCC received the following email from Laurent Lophane in Haiti along with pictures of the new latrine: "Peace and Grace to you from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I went this morning at Colminy where I inaugurated the latrine. The committee of the church and the school were happy for this big gift, you know this latrine is the first one in this area. Request From Sue Gross, Haiti Lutheran Mission Project On our last visit to Haiti we became aware that some of the Orphans we still remember as small children are growing quickly. Some of them will soon be out on their own trying to make a living and supporting their own families. We are concerned that even though they have an education, jobs are in very short supply and it will be difficult for them to survive. Next summer we hope to restart sewing classes so that those ready to leave the orphanage will be able to support themselves by making items that we will bring back to the States to sell. For this project to start we are asking for donations of portable sewing machines. We can send these machines on the bus when we ship it and it will not cost any extra freight. Please consider dusting off that machine you no longer use and donating it to those who will put it to good use. Part of the Building Homes and Hope in Haiti project, which partners LCMS World Relief and Human Care and Lutheran Church Charities, the Guest House will be used to house mission groups working in the area. The walls are up and the interior work has begun. Many items are still needed before the Guest House opens this fall so we are having a "Guest House Shower". If you or your group would like to be a part of the "shower" and help furnish the Guest House you can make a donation for any item(s) on the list. LCC will arrange for all donations, Dollar per Dollar, to be sent to Haiti to purchase the items. On September 11, 2001, America learned that we were at war with an enemy unlike any we have ever fought. Ten years later, the War on Terror continues with no end in sight. Our enemy is not a nation or an army but a global movement which will stop at nothing short of world domination. Its soldiers embrace death in its cause as their highest honor and greatest reward. One radical Muslim declared, "Young men must be sacrificed. Throats must be slit and skulls must be shattered. This is the path to victory." Why do radical Muslims hate us? How will the death of bin Laden affect this global conflict? What will it take to win the longest war in America's history? Jim Denison answers these critical questions with insights born of a career spent engaging the Muslim world. An expert on world religions, he has lived and traveled among Muslims for more than 30 years. He explains the mind and motives of radical Islam, telling you what you need to know about the greatest threat our nation has ever faced. Looking to be in an in-depth Bible Study? LCC works through our churches to provide assistance by making the need known - and dollar per dollar we give the money to a church to help the family or individual. However, we receive some requests that are emergencies, and money is needed that day or the next day and we can't always get the need out in our weekly email newsletter first. Do you know a friend or neighbor who has been away from church? Do you have a family member who is uncomfortable with the more formal parts of worship life and the Christian faith? A safe way to open conversation would be to invite them to view an art display on Jesus' parables located at the Chestnut Court Shopping Center on the southeast corner of 75th Street & Lemont Road (Unit 194 between Edible Arrangements and the New China Buffet). Artists from the Greater Chicago area have submitted their work in this month-long display. This exhibit will be open the following dates and times: Friday, October 14 from 6 pm to 9 pm Saturday, October 15 from 10 am to 6 pm The atmosphere is non-threatening: people may come and view and leave; may pause and meditate and pray; or may converse as they desire. It's our prayer that God Himself will speak through these pieces of art and that the Holy Spirit will move hearts for His Kingdom. This opportunity is sponsored by the Woodridge Sanctuary community (www.sanctuary1010.org) and the Downers Grove Immanuel Lutheran Church community (www.ilcdg.org).
