 CHARACTER BREAKDOWN DOROTHY GALE: (15-­‐23 yr old to play teen) Kansas girl in search of something more. Strong singer, and some dance required. GLINDA, THE GOOD WITCH OF THE NORTH: (Adult 25-­‐45) Described as beautiful. benevolent and beloved. Strong singing required. Soprano. ALMIRA GULCH/WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST: (Adult 35+) Vengeful, nasty and full of ire. Hungry for power and influence. Will do anything to get what she wants. Non-­‐Singing. PROFESSOR MARVEL/WIZARD: (Adult 35+) Accidental ruler of the land of Oz, who happens to be an ordinary man from Kansas, and a former circus musician. Verbose, articulate and prone to oration. Charming and kind-­‐hearted, despite being something of a professional charlatan. Non-­‐Singing. SCARECROW: (Adult) Wants nothing more than to get a brain, which he’s convinced he lacks. Despite this, he is plucky and clever in a pinch. Very lovable. Singing and dancing required. TIN MAN: (Adult) Desperate for a heart, the tin man joins Dorothy’s journey to see the Wizard. Exceedingly charming and thoughtful. A kind-­‐hearted romantic. Singing and some dance required. Tenor. COWARDLY LION: (Adult ) Full of Bravado, despite being convinced he’s a craven coward. Nonetheless, a true-­‐blue friend, who proves himself when push comes to shove. Should move well. Some singing and good comedic skills required. AUNT EM: (Adult 40-­‐60’s) The aunt of Dorothy Gale and wife of Uncle Henry. A Kansas farmer’s wife, who is no stranger to the rigors of hard work and hard living. Down to earth, honest and strong, with a genuine affection for her niece and her husband. Double cast as Citizen of Oz. UNCLE HENRY: (Adult 40-­‐60’s) Dorothy’s uncle, and guardian. Good-­‐hearted and plain speaking, but not simple minded. A hardworking Kansas farmer, and affectionate family-­‐man. Double cast as Citizen of Oz. HUNK: (Adult) A farm hand on Dorothy’s farm. Simple and solid, but a bit of a know –it –all amongst the other farm hands. Shares some of the characteristics of the Scarecrow. Possibly to be played by Scarecrow. Otherwise will double as a Citizen of Oz. HICKORY: (Adult) Also a farm hand. Handsome and shy, a hopeless romantic. Shares some of the characteristics of the Tin Man. Possibly to be played by Tin Man. Otherwise will double as a Citizen of Oz. ZEKE: (Adult) Physically larger than the others, but inwardly he is easily startled and terrified of confrontation. Shares some of the characteristics of the Cowardly Lion. Possibly to be played by Cowardly Lion. Otherwise will double as a Citizen of Oz. GUARD: (Adult Male/Female) The official spokesperson and major-­‐domo of the Great and Wondrous Oz. A blustering self-­‐important, over-­‐officious bureaucrat who hates being the last to know…….and usually is. Strong singing required. Must move well. NIKKO: (4th grade+) The Captain of the Flying Monkeys, Nikko is aid to the Wicked Witch of the West. He/she must move well. CROWS: (Male Adults) Rather than being scared away by the Scarecrow, the crows are perched on the nearby fence. They sing and dance“If I only had a Brain” with the Scarecrow. Singing and a good harmonic ear required. Dancing and good comedic skills a plus. TREES: (Female Adults) The lady divas of the show. Planted near the woodsman’s shed, Dorothy runs into them just before discovering the Tin Man. They are smug, catty, opinionated and very vocal. They sing “If I Only Had a Heart” with Tin Man. Singing and ability to move to well required. Good ear for harmony a plus. CITIZENS OF OZ: (Adults/ Teens) The Citizens of Oz are the adult chorus of the show. Singing and movement required. Some Ozians will also be featured dancers. MUNCHKINS: (Children 4th grade+) The little people of Munchkinland. Long oppressed and happy to be freed by Dorothy. There are some featured roles among the Munchkins, such as THE MAYOR OF MUNCHKIN CITY, THE CORONER, THE BRAGGART, THE LULLABY LEAUGE, and THE LOLLIPOP GUILD. The casting of Munchkins will primarily be based on height. They will double as POPPIES, SNOWFLAKES or JITTERBUGS. Singing required, dance experience a plus. FLYING MONKEYS: (Children 4th grade+) Minions of the Wicked Witch of the West. They will double as either POPPIES or SNOWFLAKES. Must move well. JITTERBUGS: (Children/Teens 4th grade+) The frighteningly eerie, giant bugs of the spell-­‐cast forest. They will double as POPPIES, MUNCHKINS or CITIZENS OF OZ. Singing and strong dancing required. Tumbling and swing dancing a plus. POPPIES: (Children, Teens and Adults) The flowers of Oz whom The Wicked Witch of the West uses to cast a spell. Their hypnotically beautiful voices put Dorothy and her friends into a deep dangerous sleep. Will be double cast as MUNCHKINS, FLYING MONKEYS, or CITIZENS OF OZ. SNOWFLAKES: (Children/Teens) Glinda the Good Witch puts a counter spell on Dorothy and her friends to wake them up from the dangerous sleep caused by the POPPIES. Will be double cast as MUNCHKINS, FLYING MONKEYS or CITIZENS of OZ. Singing required. Dancing a plus. GENERAL NOTE: We are not looking for actors to impersonate or re-­‐create the great performances from the film version of The Wizard of Oz. However, we are looking for actors who can approximate their energy, comedic panache, and breadth of character.
