No school, no mail……. Why? Every year we honor Dr. King’s message. We often recall his I Have A Dream speech. But did you know: Dr. King’s original name was Michael Luther King, Jr. He was 35 years old when he won the Nobel Peace Prize He was arrested for driving 35 mph on a 25 mph road in 1956 4 days later, his house was bombed At the end of the 1st season of Star Trek, he convinced Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) to stay on the show. In 1957 alone, Dr. King made 208 speeches Dr. King visited Garfield High School in Seattle in 1961 Over 1,000 streets are named Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King met with President John F. Kennedy Dr. King visited with Pope John Paul VI in 1964 Dr. King was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal and a Medal of Freedom Dr. King also won a Grammy. (1971, Best Spoken Word Album for “Why I Oppose the War in Vietnam.” All 50 States observed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a federal holiday in the year 2000 April 4, 1968 Dr. King was assassinated Dr. King spent his life working for racial equality and justice for all people. In addition to his I Have A Dream speech, Dr. King left us many additional quotes that continue to spur us on to be better people and work for justice in non-violent ways that promote peace in our world: 21 ASB Smencil sales before school-$1.00 ASB Snack Sales at lunch recess-$.50 Kindergarten to Seattle Children’s Theater, 9:15 am-1:30 pm PTSA Gen. As we look at Dr. King’s quotes, discussions about what that particular quote looks like, sounds like, feels like, in our daily lives will help us start to make connections with his work. What difference can one student, one parent, one man make? Dr. King showed us. Let’s continue his work together.
