Innovation Brew Works (IBW) is the recipient of the
2015 Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards Grand Prize by the National Association of College and University
Food Services (NACUFS). IBW, operated by the Cal Poly
Pomona Foundation, Inc. (CPPF), was announced as the grand prize winner in the “retail sales–single concept” category on Saturday, July 25 during the NACUFS national conference in Indianapolis.
The annual Loyal E. Horton Dining Award is the most prestigious honor that celebrates and recognizes exemplary campus dining services throughout the
United States and Canada. In order to enter, applicants have to send a comprehensive book filled with detailed descriptions, examples, and photographs of the unit and are judged on a number of categories including the menu, facility design, merchandising, marketing, nutrition, sustainability, and the overall wow factor.
Assistant Director of Retail Operations Sandra P. Cain accepts the grand prize
In May 2015, IBW received first place in the “retail sales– single concept” category in the large school division, which automatically made IBW a contender for the grand prize.
To determine the grand prize winner, the top scoring entry from each of the small, medium, and large school divisions of a particular category are ranked against each other and evaluated by six judges. IBW was up against Azusa Pacific
University in Azusa, California and the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York.
Assistant Director of Retail Operations Sandra P. Cain, IBW Manager Jennifer Waggener, and IBW Beer Production
Manager Koby Harris accepted the grand prize award during the NACUFS national conference in Indianapolis.
As the grand prize winner, IBW was not only honored at the national conference, but will also receive a feature article in NACUFS’ magazine Campus Dining Today.
“Winning first place in the Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards is a huge accomplishment, but winning the grand prize is even more incredible,” says Dining Services Director Aaron Neilson. “I am very proud of everyone who has contributed to the success of Innovation Brew Works.”
This is the second consecutive year that a CPPF dining unit has received first place in the Loyal E. Horton Dining
Awards, but is the first time a dining unit has ever received the grand prize.
Be sure to stop by the CPPF building (Bldg. 55) to see all of the CPPF awards on display, including IBW’s most recent grand prize plaque.

The former Eco Grounds mobile coffee cart that serves the campus community near the Engineering
Building has been revamped, rebranded, and reimagined!
In order to create a better brand recognition with customers, the newly designed coffee cart is now called International Grounds Express, echoing the
International Grounds that is located in Campus
Center Marketplace.
The truck also has a brand new look as it is now dressed in a palette of burgundy with green, blue, and white accents. The International Grounds
Express logo is prominently displayed on all four sides of the vehicle.
Eco Grounds coffee will no longer be served as it was before. Instead, International Grounds Express will serve Starbucks coffee, just like the one inside
Campus Center Marketplace. Pastries and juices will also be served.
International Grounds Express will make its official debut when fall quarter begins.

Cal Poly Pomona has officially taken ownership of the land that was once the Lanterman Developmental
Center, which closed in December 2014. The official transfer of the property to the California State
University was announced by President Soraya M.
Coley in a letter sent to members of the community in early July.
“I am excited about the extraordinary opportunities for education, economic development and enhanced quality of life,” Coley said in the letter.
The property has been named Campus South, and in early July, a sign featuring its new title was installed at the Pomona Boulevard entrance.
However, planning for the site cannot begin until the State Historical Preservation Review has been completed. According to Coley, the review is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The new “Campus South” sign was installed at the
Pomona Boulevard entrance in early July.
“Developing Campus South will be a long-term process that will require much thought and discussion from all stakeholders,” Coley said.
Prior to the official transfer, the Cal Poly Pomona Foundation marketing department created an informative video about the property and the myriad benefits that it would give the university and local community. This video was shown to the Cal
State University Board of Trustees during a meeting in May. To view the video, please visit https://youtu.be/2E4hv70o25E .
The Daily Bulletin newspaper recently published an article regarding the transfer of the property. To view the article, please visit http://bit.ly/1HYFAON .

The Foundation donated 170 water bottles for the Special Olympics
World Games delegations that stayed on the Cal Poly Pomona campus from Tuesday, July 21 through the morning of Friday,
July 24.
The cities of Pomona and Chino Hills hosted 200 delegates for the
Special Olympics World Games. The athletes and their supporters
(trainers, chaperons, and aides) stayed in the Residential Suites at
Cal Poly Pomona.
Various Cal Poly Pomona departments across campus invested in this experience for the 170 delegation members which included in-kind donations of athletic fields, housing accommodations, and dining.
In late July, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering students from the University of Ulsan in Korea, who are studying English at the Cal
Poly English Language Institute, designed and constructed cardboard boats as part of a school project.
This event, appropriately titled the Cardboard Boat Regatta, featured ten people-size boats that the students were required to test. For two hours, the students tried out their cardboard boats by situating themselves in their creations and paddling across the University
Village pool. The results were both impressive and humorous to watch.

Over graduation weekend in mid-June, a fairly large water incident occurred at building 97; a toilet overflowed in one of the restrooms upstairs, which ultimately flooded to the lower level, impacting most of the Career Center office areas, meeting rooms, and hallways.
When the Foundation learned about the event on the following Monday, the Foundation Central Facilities team immediately jumped into action. After shutting off the water to the overflowing toilet, they contacted company
Sheriff Plumbing to get them on-site as quickly as possible, and they began to assess the damaged areas. They also began to extract the water from all affected areas.
They worked with the Career Center director to help relocate the employees who were impacted. The director of environmental health and safety (EHS) was also brought in to assess the situation from a safety standpoint.
Ultimately, it was necessary to bring in a company that specializes in water damage restoration, and Belfor was used for that project. Over a several day period, Belfor extracted water, ran fans to dry everything out, treated carpet, and removed drywall to expose any damaged areas to allow for mitigation. A contractor was used to replace the drywall and repaint.
When the main sewage lines were snaked out, the workers discovered large chunks of grease entangled with paper towels. While both substances contributed to the overflow, the built-up grease was likely the main culprit. The sewage system in building 97 has a line from the kitchen area that ties directly into the main sewage line. That line transports all wastes from the kitchen area to the main sewage line, and this was most likely the source of the grease build-up.
currently no grease traps installed in the kitchen line to the main sewage line, in spring
2015, University Facilities had communicated to
Foundation Facilities their plans to install grease traps this summer at building 97 and Kellogg
West. Installing and maintaining grease traps in these two lines is the long-term solution to minimize future problems.
Installing grease traps is not the only improvement being made. The Foundation real estate department is also assisting with major enhancements to the Career Center by:
• Replacing carpet in individual rooms and the lobby
• Adding a dividing wall in one of the larger rooms
• Installing a door to provide direct access to the conference room, which at this time, can only be entered through another room
• Providing a kitchen. This includes both lower and upper kitchen cabinets with a double sink and a cut out to accommodate a microwave, new floor tile, electrical upgrades and a garbage disposal. A pantry cabinet will be installed to enclose the mop sink.
The key design feature to minimize clogged lines from kitchen grease is to install grease traps. While there are
The water incident was clearly unplanned, and yet everyone involved responded flawlessly! Thank you to the
Career Center, EHS, Campus Facilities, Foundation Central
Facilities, and Foundation Real Estate for all your hard work!
