The Mexican Cession Rachel Lim The Mexican Cession (1848) Mexico and America ended the war by singing the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo on which Mexico gave up part of their land now called California, Nevada, Utah and some territories of Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. Background: The Mexican-American War • 1835, Texas declared independence from Mexico • 1836, the Republic of Texas was formed • Mexico was not happy • asserted that if Texas joined the Union, they would declare war on America • 1845, Texas joined the Union • Now Texas and Mexico had issues over border, Rio Grande • US asked for Mexico to pay the debt that they owe from fighting against Spain Background: The Mexican-American War (continued...) • “Manifest Destiny” influenced a lot • moving to the west (esp. California) was the boom • California was also about to declare independence from Mexico • Late 1845, Mexico rejected America’s suggestion to give them the land of the Rio Grande boundary • The Mexican soldiers killed the American soldiers • This sparked the American congress to declare war against Mexico • February 2, 1848, Mexico signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo Slavery • Mormon pioneers → Utah & California Gold Rush ➝ California • 1846-7, slavery was banned in the new territories except TEXAS • 1850, slavery was allowed in the ceded land of Mexico • 1850, slavery depending on sovereignty • With the Mexican Cession came along the modernization. (ex. transportation, businesses, etc) • California aced among the new territories (ex. gold rush) • Boosted up the American economy • During the civil war, Californian gold supported the eastern states Some Facts to Know • The US paid “$15,000,000 ($298,310,309 in 2005 dollars)” which was released from Mexico’s debt payment • Finally decided to separate the Republic of Texas and Mexico by Rio Grande • “Texas Annexation” • The land takes up almost 15% of the United States • Mexico ceded 55% of their land • 1846, during the MexicanAmerican war, Kansas seized New Mexico • As estimated in 2007, the population of the ceded land is 16.4% of the US population Rio Grande Conclusion! • Strongly motivated by the “Manifest Destiny”, America had become bigger by conquering the west. Even though some say the Mexican-American war was unnecessary, the US had made the right decision to go over the top and seize the land. Furthermore, the California Gold Rush in 1848 propelled the spread of the people to the west. With many people coming over to California, the state had developed greatly and diverse races of people gathered. Everything has its price. The Mexican-American war cost numerous lives of people, but in the big picture, it was one of the most essential events that spurred the growth of the United States. Bibliography • "Mexican Cession."
