English 10 Chivalry isn’t dead… Prove it! In our study of the legends of King Arthur and his knights we have looked closely at the Code of Chivalry. This is the moral code that governed the actions of the knights. The Code consisted of three cornerstones: ideals, courtly love and valor. Many say that Chivalry is dead; it simply does not exist anymore. As a people, we have moved far away from living by the high moral standards set by the knights and their Code of Chivalry. Your task today is to prove this attitude is wrong, that chivalry is still alive and well in our society… we just might call it something else. DUE: 10/11/12 *If not completed in class* The Assignment: Look through news sources such as newspapers, news magazines and networks, and internet news sites to find stories that reflect the Code of Chivalry as it exists today. You should use your notes from yesterday to determine if the stories you find are an example of chivalry living today. You should also use your notes to find search terms to get you started. 1. Print two stories that you feel represent at least two elements of the Code. a. Places to start: Lincoln Journal Star, Omaha World Herald, NY Times, CNN, Channel 8, Channel 10/11, Washington Post, CBS, MSNBC, FOX, etc. 2. Write or type (preferably type since we are in a lab) a well-developed paragraph, which is 7-‐10 sentences, explaining your rationale, or why it fits the Code, for each story you choose. a. Example: finding one article that reflects bravery and another that reflects courtesy. b. Example: finding one article that reflects great skill and another that reflects commitment. 3. Include a citation for each article you use for the activity. You may want to fire up Noodletools for this portion; it is an easy way to correctly cite your sources! The citation should come at the end of your rationale paragraph. 4. With the construction paper and other supplies provided, make a display of your findings. Attach both the article and the rationale paragraph to the display and feel free to get creative. Be sure to label each element of the Code you discuss. a. We will hang these displays in F230! Grading Guide: Both article sections and paragraphs should be an example of your best thinking and writing skills. Each article will be graded on its clear connection to the Code of Chivalry and a correct citation (10 points), and each paragraph (10 points) will be graded on your ability to communicate your rationale for choosing that article, clearly demonstrating your insight into the time period, the literature and the mastery of standard English conventions (usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc). Total formative points: 40.
