The Last Song

The book The Last Song by Nicolas Sparks is a romance novel. The books general topic is developed during the summer Ronnie and her brother have to stay with their dad. They haven’t seen him since he left them 3 years ago. During that summer both, good and bad things happen, things that for sure change their lives specially, Ronnie’s. The book is basically about Ronnie growing as a person as she learns about true love and forgiveness. I think Nicholas Sparks wrote this novel to show us how short and unexpected life can be. Ronnie arrives to her father’s house as a rebel teenager full of anger towards a father she can’t understand why abandons her when she needed him the most. Ronnie’s father keeps trying to strengthen their relationship but she keeps treating him in the worst possible way.

It all changes after meeting the love of her life, Will. After meeting Will the anger and pain starts to fade but are soon replaced with guilt and sadness. Ronnie discovers her father has stomach cancer and will die pretty soon. She also discovers that it was her mother who cheated on her father. She feels guilty for spending most of the summer fighting and hurting him. Now, all she wants is to let him know how much she truly loves him. I think Nicholas is trying to prove the reader to be nice to everyone and tell the people you love how much they mean to you because we never know when we may lose them. I also wrote this novel because he is an expert at writing dramatic romantic novels like: The Notebook, A Walk To Remember and

The Lucky One.

In this book the main character is Veronica (Ronnie) Miller, a rebellious teenager girl who after being ‘abandoned’ by her dad, got PMS (pissed-at-men syndrome).

Three years after her fathers’ departure, she is forced to spend the summer with her little brother at her fathers house at W rightsville beach.

Ronnie hates the idea and despite of her fathers’ intents to fix their relationship she keeps trying to spend the less possible time with him. Then she meets Will, a rich handsome boy who changes everything. He fixes her damaged heart. With a fixed heart Ronnie is able to forgive her dad but when everything seems find something horrible occurs to her dad…

Even though all the themes revolved around love, I think that forgiveness and trust are the most important ones. It hard to trust someone and even more when you have been disappointed in many occasions but sometimes people deserve a chance into your heart. In the story, Ronnie, after the divorce of her parents was greatly disappointed. Her reaction to so much pain was to turn off her feelings and trust no one. For example when she first meets Will she acts very mean and none caring just because she is afraid of being hurt again. But as she spends more time with him she discovers his intensions are good and opens her heart to him. Will and her dad both hurt her even though they loved her more than

anybody. This is another of the messages; everybody is going to hurt you. You have to decide how is worth the pain, in the case of the book Will is worth it.

Another theme discussed in the book would be forgiveness. It is important to learn not to have any kind of rancor. People we love sometimes hurt us but we have to put in there shoes and try to understand them. Ronnie for example, blames her father for the divorce but the truth is, it was her mother who cheated on him. He was very hurt and decided to go away until he felt a little better. Even if leaving Ronnie wasn’t his best choice he had regret it and tried to make it up but instead Ronnie hurt him more. So even if we are very mad with someone we really care for, we should not hurt them more instead we should forgive them so we can forgive our souls.

Something the author did well was to make the story unpredictable. Most people will infer the story will end with “and they lived happily ever after” but it certainly didn’t. He didn’t write a fairytale, instead he wrote a book that will probably make you cry like it made me. But I think that makes it realistic, most of the time people don’t live “happily ever after”. With his words he captured real feeling and he did this so well that you could almost feel like Ronnie.

What I liked best about the book was how Ronnie changed. He came to her father house as a rebellious, wild teenager who didn’t care about her future she didn’t even wanted to go to collage or do much. At the end of the story she has become a young lady who will be going to Julliard. She learns about her mistakes and opens her heart. Behind that rude girl was a hurt girl how was afraid of being hurt again but at the end of the story she opens her heart to love and forgiveness and reaches happiness. What I liked the least of the book was a

Ashley, one of the characters. She really wanted Will for herself and seemed determined to ruin his relationship with Ronnie. She is very means and selfish and only cares about herself and I hate that kind of people.

Teenage girls or young ladies will completly love this book because it is fill with two of there favorite subjects; drama and romance. The relationship between Will and Ronnie, will leave most of the ladies wishing to have a similar relationship. But the story has also a very sad ending and contains wrong influences of bad people like Marcus or some of the friends Ronnie used to have.

Nicholas Sparks fans woudn’t feel dissapointed neither. I will give the book The

Last Song a rating of 5 stars because despite of the sad ending that will teach you many lessons it also leaves you witha warm heart sensation. I garante you won’t want to stop reading once you start. Everyone that knows how to should read it.
