Disability Access Our wheelchair ramp is located near the Grand side entrance with
an elevator to bring you to the Church level. Our church is also equipped with a
hearing assistance system. Please ask an usher for a receiver.

Religious Education is available for kindergarten through eighth grade. Classes meet
September through May on Sunday mornings. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
Program for ages 3-6 years. Contact Angie Doerr at 314-977-7302 or

Liturgy of the Word for Children is celebrated weekly for children in kindergarten
through seventh grade at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday Mass. Childcare is available for
children ages six months through pre-kindergarten during the 10:30 a.m. Mass in the

From the Pastor’s Desk
Saturday morning eight Jesuits were ordained to the priesthood in New Orleans
for the Central & Southern province. Among them is Fr. Quang Tran, SJ who
next month will begin his time with us as associate pastor. Please keep the newly
ordained priests in your prayers.
Pope Francis famously said of the clergy he desires "Shepherds who smell like the sheep."
He is not interested in a notion of priesthood that accentuates difference and distance.
The priest is one with the people he serves. Rather than being the person with all the answers, his call is to be with God's Church as it seeks to follow more closely the Gospel.
Once again returning to St. Paul's analogy of the body in I Corinthians is most helpful. The diversity of gifts arise from the one Holy Spirit. The various parts of the body perform different
functions but all are necessary. There is no one gift or part of the body that trumps all others.
It is our common baptism into Jesus Christ that unites us.

Outreach Program Summer Closing
Due to financial constraints, our Outreach Program, which provides assistance with birth certificates
and state ID’s, will be closed for the entire months of June and July. We will reopen the week of August
4th and 5th, at which time we will continue our regular program hours. Throughout the summer, we
will continue to serve guests who are referred from agencies with whom we have an ongoing contract.
The Outreach Program is the cornerstone of our parish’s Social Ministry. We recognize the immense
importance of providing this service and are committed to continuing it. This summer, we will take
the time to plan for the long-term sustainability of our services, as well as to work toward identifying
and addressing the systemic problems that bring guests to our door every Tuesday and Wednesday.

Social Ministry Outreach Reflections
From a Volunteer
Let it be known to all people that the reason for this ministry is Jesus Christ.
I have been a volunteer at Social Ministry Outreach for the past nine
years. I am not a parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church, but an
alumnus of Saint Louis University. The Holy Spirit and Sister Elizabeth Kolmer guided me to the Outreach Ministry.
Over the years, of serving our guests, I have been amazed by their
GRATITUDE and POLITENESS. Most give me handshakes, hugs, or
a hand written note of thanks. We all hear “GOD BLESS YOU FOR ALL YOU DO, THANKS
FOR HELPING ME.”
Giving an I.D. or birth certificate empowers our guests to secure employment, housing, education. I have witnessed positive change in so many lives. One example is a lady I helped a few
years ago. She needed an I.D. for a job opportunity. My husband and I are Billiken Basketball
fans. Unknowingly to me, the job was at the Chaifetz Arena on campus. One evening while
attending a basketball game, I saw her and we ran to hug each other. It was a time in my life I
will never forget.
WE are all the HANDS, the FEET and HEART of JESUS to all we are privileged to serve.

Dear friends of college church,
Our time together was brief, but I THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing a part of
this journey of faith with me.
I leave with mixed feelings, of course, excited to see where the Lord lands me,
and a bit anxious about another transition. I find solace in the words of St Ignatius of Loyola: “God freely created us so that we might know, love, and serve him
in this life and be happy with him forever. God's purpose in creating us is to draw
forth from us a response of love and service here on earth, so that we may attain
our goal of everlasting happiness with him in heaven. All the things in this world
are gifts of God, created for us, to be the means by which we can come to know
him better, love him more surely, and serve him more faithfully. As a result, we
ought to appreciate and use these gifts of God insofar as they help us toward
our goal of loving service and union with God. But insofar as any created things
hinder our progress toward our goal, we ought to let them go.” And so, as i bid
you all farewell, I look forward to hearing about the continued progress of the
five year plan - as 2020 will be here soon and very soon! In closing, I turn again

CALLING ALL COOKS
We are in need of cooks to join our St. Patrick Center casserole program. It's easy to contribute to this charity as you simply make CHILI MAC (recipe and pan provided) at your
convenience one time per month and bring it to the SFX Parish Center office. Casseroles
from SFX and other parishes are served daily to St. Patrick Center clients.
St. Patrick Center is one of Missouri’s largest providers of housing, employment and health
opportunities for people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless and assists
more than 8,000 people each year. The mission is to help individuals and families move
from homelessness to independence in dignified, cost-effective and permanent ways.
If you'd like to join our casserole ministry or have questions about it, please contact the Parish
Center office.
Summer Film Fest!
Our next presentation will be “The Soloist” on Tuesday, June 16th.
In “The Soloist,” an emotionally soaring drama about the redemptive power of music, journalist
Steve Lopez (Oscar nominee Robert Downey Jr.) discovers Nathaniel Anthony Ayers (Oscar winner Jamie Foxx), a former classical music prodigy, playing his violin on the streets of L.A. As Lopez
endeavors to help the homeless man find his way back, a unique friendship is formed, one that
transforms both their lives. “The Soloist” is directed by Joe Wright (Golden Globe winner for Best
Drama and Oscar nominee for Best Picture “Atonement”).

Children’s Religious Education Registration
Our Religious Education Program is now accepting registrations
for the 2015-16 school year. Classes meet three times a month
from September through May on Sunday mornings from 9:15 until
10:20 a.m. Children in grades pre-Kindergarten through Eighth are
welcome. Sacramental preparation for First Reconciliation and
First Communion are part of our Second Grade program as is Confirmation preparation in Eighth Grade.
Social Justice is a strong component of our Religious Education
Program. Classes have a “Sandwich Sunday” where from Second
Grade on they have a Sunday when they make sandwiches for the
poor as they reflect on the lesson of the Good Samaritan. Students
in classes Fourth Grade and above participate in Service Saturdays
where they visit homeless shelters and prepare and serve meals to
shelter guests. Our religious instruction is interactive and engaging with the emphasis placed on bringing children closer to God.
The registration forms for the 2015-16 Program Year will soon be in the mail to current Religious Education families. If you are a new family and would like to register your child(ren), or if
you have a child in a Catholic school who would like to make their First Communion or Confirmation at the College Church, contact Angie Doerr, Director of Religious Education, at

The Saint Francis Pledge
All across our country, Catholics are taking the St. Francis Pledge to Care for Creation and
the Poor and joining the Catholic Climate Covenant. The St. Francis Pledge is a promise and
a commitment by Catholic individuals, families, parishes, organizations and institutions to live
our faith by protecting God’s Creation and advocating on behalf of people in poverty who face
the harshest impacts of global climate change. To join the Covenant, all we have to do is to
commit to act on each of the five elements of the St. Francis Pledge and register our Pledges
at www.CatholicClimateCovenant.org.
I/We Pledge to:
~ PRAY and reflect on the duty to care for God’s Creation and protect the poor and vulnerable.
~ LEARN about and educate others on the causes and moral dimensions of climate change.
~ ASSESS how we—as individuals and in our families, parishes and other affiliations—
contribute to climate change by our own energy use, consumption, waste, etc.
~ ACT to change our choices and behaviors to reduce the ways we contribute to climate
change.
~ ADVOCATE for Catholic principles and priorities in climate change discussions and decisions, especially as they impact those who are poor and vulnerable.
Over the next few weeks, we will discuss some specific ways we can act on the St. Francis
Pledge.

is scheduled for June 28th after the 10:30 am Mass. The location will be announced in the next

JustFaith
“Life changing” is often how JustFaith program participants describe their experience of learning, praying, studying, listening and challenging themselves to more deeply understand how God is calling us to
serve the least among us. Based on Catholic Social Teaching, JustFaith is a program that focuses on the
Gospel’s call to compassion, engagement in the life of Jesus, and to bring about God’s vision of justice in
the world. Meeting weekly, groups of 8-15 people are engaged in mind, heart and spirit exploring the
challenges of following Jesus today.
