Word Family Bonanza Included in this product: Word Family Groups: e Fr AT (pg 3-8), AN/AD (pg 9-15), AP/AG (pg 16-22), OG/OP/OT (pg 25-32), EG/EN/ET (pg 33-40), UG/UN/UT (pg 41-48), IG/ILL/IP (pg 49-56), R-Controlled Vowels (pg 57-67), VCe (ake, ore, ine) (pg 68-75) 6 worksheets for each word family set (cut and paste, crossword, cloze, word search, alphabetical order, scrambled words recording sheet) Sort cards for each family set e Assessment sheets for each word family set: Each sheet has a picture representing each word and sentences for students to complete. I read the words, in random order, and students write them next to the correct picture. They then silently use the words to complete the sentences. Pr I use these as matching practice (students match the word to the picture) as well as for “Memory” style games, flashcards, to place the words in alphabetical order, and other review activities. ev Bulletin board templates I put up a new bulletin board for each word family with the words on shapes. I also put up shapes that have no words on them and the students write words they “discover” in their Magnet spelling strips ie readings that fit the pattern on them with dry erase markers. w I laminate and cut each page and then place the cards on metal cookie sheets from the dollar store. The students then use magnetic letters to spell each word. List of books for reading aloud and independently for each family set (end of product) Review Games / Activities (pg 3) Lesson Format: Review the difference between short and long vowels. Review vowel sound of the unit. Read aloud book for the day. Some kind of signal for word family of the day such as raise your hand or snap your fingers every time you hear a word belonging to today’s word family. Decodable book for the day. Reading format varies between partner read, circle read, silent read, read and repeat, etc. Last day of unit: Play review game. Spelling test: show them the picture card, say the word, use in sentence, say the word Word work: Worksheet for the word family to improve vocabulary, handwriting, and general literacy. Word Card Sort: match the word to the picture Spin-Spell-Sentence: spin the CD (or draw a picture card), spell the word pictured, use it in a sentence (CD spinner building plans and word family spinners available in my TPT store sometime in the future, contact me if you’re interested and they’re not there.) e Fr Student Dictionary / Journal: With younger students I ask them to make lists of the words for each family and illustrate them. Older students write sentences for each word and il lustrate them. They like to do “sentence challenges” and see who can come up with the best sentence that includes the most words from one family. This journal is available in my TPT store for $2. e Scrambled Words: Each word family set has twelve words so I created two egg cartons for each set. I numbered plastic eggs 1-12, and then placed letter tiles to spell a word from each set into the eggs (a different word for each egg). The students then chose an egg, unscrambled the letters, wrote the word on their paper for the corresponding number. Pr Suggested Review Games ev Muffin Tin Toss: write the various word families in disposable cupcake wrappers, place one wrapper inside each well of a muffin tin. Students stand behind a predetermined line and toss a large button into a well. They must then say a word from that family, write it on the board, and use it in a sentence. ie Short A Folder Game: print and paste the two sides of the game board into a folder for ease of use. Students roll a die and move along the board spelling words they land on and/or using them in a sentence. (included in this unit, pg 23-24) w Word Family Jeopardy: available in my TPT store for $5, reviews all the word families covered in this unit Beach Ball Bat: I write the various word families, one per section, on a beach ball. The students take turns batting it to one another and catching it. Wherever their right thumb lands tells them which word family they are working from. The student must then state a word from that family, spell it, and use it in a sentence. I track the words on the board so we don’t repeat them and they score points for naming words, spelling correctly, and giving good example sentences.
