Fall Season Features:
New Playground At Birch Meadow School:
The Birch Meadow School Playground is getting a facelift
this summer. The Rockwall area is being renovated
complete with a new poured-in-place rubber surface kids
are sure to love. The playground is also receiving several
new structures to enhance play. The work should be
complete before the end of August.
Exciting Projects Underway on the
Fields!
The Town of Reading has been working on several
projects since the beginning of last year. Here is a brief
update of each project and the estimated time each are
expected to be completed.
Memorial Park Skating Lights:
The US Army Corps of Engineers have agreed to install
the lights at Memorial Park as a training/service project.
This will be the second project done by the Corps in the
past three years. The lights will be installed for the two
skating areas and will feature 16 LED- energy efficient
fixtures on six poles illuminating the area. The work
will begin in September and the facility is expected to be
open for first skate this winter!
Washington Park Renovation:
Work has begun for a new Washington Street entrance
walkway, basketball court, tennis court and water
fountain. This facility is expected to be open by the end of
the fall. The baseball field will remain open throughout
the construction work. These enhancements should
bring some excitement to an already tremendous facility.
A special thanks to Dunkin Donuts for supporting this
initiative. The Washington Street entrance and area will
be closed until late-October.
As you can see, it will be a busy few months around town.
These facility enhancements are all done with the same
idea in mind...making Reading better for its residents.

Reading’s Cultural Economy
district in Downtown Reading is aimed at leveraging
our creative talent and cultural assets in a way that
will breathe new life into the Downtown. Cultural
Economic development supports local business,
historic preservation, downtown revitalization, and
plays an important role in the new economy which
is driven by technology, innovation, and creativity”.
re you aware that Reading has a Symphony
Orchestra? Did you know that we have a
local Arts Association? Have you been
to the Parker Tavern historical site? Have you
attended a performance by one of the many local
dance schools? If not, you may not realize how
rich Reading is with culture! In fact, we have so
much culture, that the Town has received a grant
from the Massachusetts Downtown Initiative to
create a Cultural District. Under the guidance of
a consultant, who is funded through the grant, and
the assistance of a working group, we will develop
an inventory of all the cultural assets in Reading
and gather feedback from stakeholders to help shape
the Cultural District.
Work on this grant will continue through the fall.
If you want to be part of the Working Group or
want more information about this project, please

Jean Delios, the Assistant Town Manager for

Super Soccer Stars: Kick & Play
12 - 24 MONTHS
AGES 2 - 5
Kick and Play is a parent-child pre-soccer and movement
program specifically designed for toddlers between
12 and 24 months. Our experienced instructors along
with our puppet friends, Mimi & Pepe, take you and
your little one through a world of exciting physical
activity. Individual attention, positive reinforcement,
and engaging original music help to develop pre-soccer
skills that will have your toddler learning to balance,
run, kick and play.
Our classes begin with a welcome, incorporating a song
for the younger age groups. The classes then kick off
with stimulating warm-up games followed by a musclewarming stretch to get everyone ready for action.
Individual, partner, and group activities are introduced
in a non-competitive environment to optimize the
experience for each child. Every session culminates in
a scrimmage game (adapted variations for younger age
groups) to familiarize each child with the structure
of a game setting, while always encouraging our young
kickers with positive reinforcement.

Martial Arts program. This system is dedicated to teaching
women defense concepts and techniques against various

The Reading Police have a Community Room available for
Reading Groups and organizations, which seats 48 people.
An administration fee is charged for its use. Applications
are available at all Town Buildings.
The Reading Police Department’s speed trailers are a great
way to help lower vehicle speeds on problem roadways. The
devices have a built in radar unit that is connected to a large
flashing signboard. The flashing speed makes drivers more
aware of their travel speeds and slows traffic down. If your
neighborhood could benefit from a device, please contact
Safety Officer David V. Savio for more information. These
signs have an ability to perform an informal traffic study
and post special messages.
