Other Notes:
1. Please read the GUIDE TO SUCCEEDING IN BIOLOGY 100 posted on the BIOL 100 website.
2. Biology majors should take CHEM 104, CHEM 105 and CHEM 140 as early as possible in their B.Sc.
program.
3. Students who have questions about the Biology BSc program are welcome to book a program advising
appointment (contact the Biology Main Office [LB 244; 585-4145] to book an appointment). Program
advice is also available on the Biology Department website (http://www.uregina.ca/science/biology/).
4. Students looking to take an elective Biology course are welcome in BIOL 100, but should also consider
BIOL 140 or BIOL 150 (BIOL 100 and 101 are majors Biology courses and are thus more
comprehensive).

Policies and Procedures for Marks, Assignments, Mid-Term Exams, Lab Exam and the Final Exam
1. There will be no extra credit and no curved or dropped grades. Distribution of grades will follow the
scheme outlined in this syllabus without exception.
2. There will be no extensions on assignment deadlines. Sufficient advanced notice is given for you to meet
the given deadlines. Late penalties for each assignment will be discussed in class.
3. There are no make-up mid-term exams. Marks for the missed mid-term exam will be reallocated to the
final exam. Students who miss either of the lecture mid-term exams or the lab exam must provide a valid
excuse with documentation.
4. Deferred final exams can only be granted by the Associate Dean, Academic (for Faculty of Science
students), or by the Deans and/or Associate Deans of other Faculties or Federated Colleges. Course
instructors cannot grant deferred final exams.

More Information About Textbooks
Student evaluation forms from previous years have made it very clear that some students find a textbook
invaluable in BIOL 100, while other students consider a textbook to be unnecessary. Comments about the
textbook range from “The textbook is extremely useful” to “If you take good notes in class, then you don't really
need it”. Similarly, some students who have bought textbooks consider the most useful part of the textbook to be
the accompanying CD-ROM. Others consider the CD-ROM to be of marginal utility. So, the decision to buy one
really depends upon you as an individual, and your learning style. The instructors of this course suggest the
purchase of a textbook, but it is not obligatory.
!
The textbook for this course is “Reece, Urry, Cain, Wasserman, Minorsky, and Jackson - Campbell Biology (9th
edition)”. The 6th through 8th editions are acceptable (note that these editions have a different title and a different
first author than the 9th edition; “Campbell, Reece, Urry, Cain, Wasserman, Minorsky and Jackson - Biology (8th
edition)” or “Campbell & Reece - Biology (6th and 7th editions)”. New and used textbooks may be purchased
at the U of R Bookstore. Copies of the 6th, 7th, and 8th editions of the text will also be available in the lab room
during the lab periods. As well, copies of other standard Biology textbooks are available for use in the BIOL 100
lab room (LB 411).
!
Lastly, there is an open access Biology textbook (in PDF form). This textbook may be downloaded from http://
open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/ and information is available on the BIOL 100 website.
