Calgary’s development into the major centre it is
today had a lot to do with the discovery of oil on
its outskirts in 1914. Calgary has become the oil
and gas capital of Canada, and investment in
Alberta’s energy sector has turned our city into
an economic powerhouse.
From breathtaking landscapes and the majestic
Canadian Rockies to rolling foothills, expansive
prairies and the dramatic badlands of the
Canadian West, Calgary has it all.

Spectacular outdoor adventure, a rich pioneer

all result in a rewarding and unforgettable
experience for everyone who is part of the

The University of Calgary is young,
innovative and forward-thinking, which
has a lot to do with our surroundings.
Calgary is one of the best economic regions
in Canada, and is located in a beautiful and
inspiring outdoor environment. There is a lot
of energy in the community, and it spills onto
our campus.
Internationally known, Calgary is a
world-class destination. No matter your
style, interests, or tastes, there is something for
you here. Described as casual but cosmopolitan,
urban but outdoorsy, Calgary has big-city
energy mixed with friendly Western hospitality;
a corporate work ethic mixed with a dynamic arts
and cultural scene. It is a city worth exploring.

City Life
Calgary is now one of the most
economically dynamic cities in the
world. It is home to the second highest number
of major corporations in Canada, and numerous
bustling satellite offices are also located here.
Its booming job market and plentiful
opportunities are only part of the story.
Calgary is simply a fun place to live.
In July, grab your cowboy hat and take in the
Calgary Stampede. A celebration unlike anything
else, the Stampede is known for its pancake
breakfasts, Stampede parties and the midway.
Sports fans have a lot to cheer about in Calgary.
The city plays host to several major sports teams
including the NHL’s Calgary Flames, the CFL’s
Calgary Stampeders and NLL’s Calgary Roughnecks.
The snow-capped peaks dominating
Calgary’s western horizon have always
attracted adventurers. Now it is your turn to
explore them. The Canadian Rocky Mountains are
truly a world-class attraction. Just an hour from
the city, they are home to indigenous species
such as grizzly bear, wolf, cougar and caribou,
and scenery that is just as compelling—alpine
meadows, ancient glaciers, and towering peaks.
In this landscape, you will find some of the best
hiking and skiing in the world, not to mention
biking, rock climbing, horseback riding, kayaking
and more. The mountain communities of
Canmore, Banff and Lake Louise are excellent
base camps for any recreational activity.
With all of this right at your doorstep, getting an
education at the University of Calgary has some
real highs.

Admission Information
High School Students
GCE (BRITISH SYSTEM) STUDENTS
Students currently in their senior year of high
school, or those who have recently graduated,
will be considered for admission based on their
high school courses. If you are an international
student or a Canadian student who has studied
outside of Canada, you will be considered for
admission on the basis of your senior level high
school studies. Completion of at least 12 years
of schooling and satisfactory standing in five
appropriate subjects are required.
Students must present five distinct and
appropriate GCE/GCSE subjects, with at least
two at the Advanced (or Principal) level. Any
subject presented at both Advanced and GCSE
or Ordinary levels will not be considered as two
distinct subjects. For more specific information,
including information on advanced credit, please
visit ucalgary.ca/admissions/gce.
AMERICAN CURRICULUM STUDENTS
If you are studying in the United States or in
an international school with American curriculum,
you are required to submit a transcript showing
your complete high school record. We will use
a combination of senior level, honours and/or
AP courses to determine your admission
eligibility. In addition, we require either ACT
(minimum composite score of 24) or SAT
Reasoning Test (minimum average score of 1100,
with no score lower than 400, calculated over
either Critical Reading or Writing, whichever
is higher, and Math). Please note that while
not required, SAT Subject Test results will be
accepted in lieu of appropriate in-class courses
for admission consideration.
International Baccalaureate
(IB) Students
If you are a high school student you may submit
both your high school curriculum results and your
IB Diploma results. We will use whichever results
work to your advantage when we make early
and formal admission decisions. The minimum
diploma score required (including bonus points)
is 24—some programs require a higher score.
Please note that we will consider the two sets
of results independently and will not blend them
to determine your eligibility. For IB Certificate
students, we will use your high school grades
for admission and only use your IB Higher Level
courses for advanced credit. For specific IB
admission guidelines, including information
on advanced standing and credit, please visit
ucalgary.ca/admissions/ib.
If you are studying other international curriculum,
please visit ucalgary.ca/admissions for
minimum admission requirements.

credit for all AP exams presented with a score
of 4 or 5, will be automatically considered for
