PLEASE CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY ADDRESS BY MR PHILLIP TAN, CHAIRMAN OF COMMUNITY CHEST AND CARE & SHARE MOVEMENT STEERING COMMITTEE AT ‘DIFFERENT STROKES, ONE HOPE’ EXHIBITION ON 24 MAY 2014, SATURDAY, 6.30PM AT THE FULLERTON HOTEL Mr Peter Low, Chairman of SUN-DAC Mr Giovanni Viterale, General Manager of The Fullerton Heritage Ms June Goh, Director of Studio Haroobee Ladies and Gentlemen 1 Good evening to everyone. I am very pleased to be here this evening at the “Different Strokes, One Hope” Exhibition organised by Studio Haroobee to raise funds for SUN-DAC. As a member voluntary welfare organisation (VWO) of the National Council of Social Service, SUN-DAC has been caring for persons with intellectual disabilities for close to 25 years through two day activity centres, equipping them with basic living skills and improving their physical abilities through therapy. The services provided by SUNDAC help their clients become more independent and provide invaluable respite for their caregivers. 2 I am delighted to be here today in the presence of generous and passionate individuals who have contributed in enabling SUN1 DAC to help serve 50 clients at both centres. With your help, they can receive the much-needed assistance without needing to worry about issues such as transportation costs, which can be quite hefty for clients with physical disabilities needing regular therapy sessions. 3 We are also very grateful to Studio Haroobee for holding this fund-raising exhibition to help the clients of SUN-DAC. The artworks exhibited displays the creativity and the hard work put in by both the students and their teacher, which includes over 30 excellent art pieces. I commend their amazing efforts and I hope that everyone will donate generously for their painstaking efforts. 4 This exhibition has also brought out the key elements of the nation-wide Care & Share Movement that Community Chest is leading this year, and that is to care for the disadvantaged through the gift of money, time and talent. We hope to rally the community to show concern for the needy and over 200 VWOs in the social service sector have also shown strong support for the movement. A total of 870 fund-raising and volunteerism projects will be rolled out this year to optimise the $250 million government matching grant set aside for the movement. This will truly be a wonderful way to celebrate Singapore’s 50th anniversary next year. 5 Community Chest is also actively engaging more segments of the community to persuade them to contribute in various ways. I am happy to share that we were able to engage the Chinese community recently through the inaugural Community Chest – SCO Mother’s 2 Day Charity Concert on 2 May 2014 and raised more than $850,000 from the event. We also hope to reach out more to younger segments of our community to do their part for charity as well. Therefore, it is really heart-warming to know that this group of young artists from today’s exhibition have chosen to use their talents to create wonderful art creations to give disadvantaged individuals the opportunities to live independent and meaningful lives. 6 Before ending, I would like to commend Studio Haroobee once again for the initiative. I would also like to congratulate all the young artists, Emelia, Kaelynn, Lukas and Steffi, whose works have been exhibited as well as their parents and wish them success in their future endeavours. 7 Thank you and have a pleasant evening ahead. 3
