Title:
Collective Research Project for the Enhancement of the History Program
Description:
The Undergraduate and Master of Arts in History Program at the Ateneo de Manila
University is offering several required courses on Western History, Asian History and
Philippine History. In fact, these courses are among the most sought after Social
Science courses in the Ateneo.
The History courses and research areas offered by the Faculty of Letters, Arts and
Humanities of the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis can provide an in-depth
exposure to our faculty in terms of new methodologies and perspectives, which in
turn, can be helpful in improving the manner by which Asian, Western, Philippine and
Colonial histories are taught here in the Philippines.
The aim of this BMP is to exchange ideas and teaching methods and develop
cooperation between an Asian and a European higher education institution in order to
enhance both Undergraduate and Master Programs. Specifically, some courses
offered by the Faculty of Letters, Arts and Humanities of the University of NiceSophia Antipolis could be added to the Undergraduate and Master Program at the
Ateneo de Manila University.
The University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis has been chosen as host institution for two
reasons:
1. The University of Nice Library collection has a special collection on Asian Studies
(Fonds Asemi)
2. The presence of the esteemed Professor Xavier Huetz de Lemps of the Centre de
la Méditerranée Moderne et Contemporaine in the faculty roster of the University of
Nice-Sophia Antipolis contributes to the interest of the History Department of the
Ateneo to have faculty members trained under his supervision and direction. As the
name clearly indicates, the CMMC is specialized on Mediterranean Studies, but their
collective research projects and their Master of History could be very interesting for:
a. comparison with the "Méditerranée Asiatique" of the South China Sea; and,
b. for the way transnational history is taught in France.

Dr. Xavier Huetz de Lemps has been chosen as Ateneo’s contact in the host
institution for he has studied and participated extensively in studies and conferences
relating to history of the Philippines. Some of his works have been, in fact, published
by the Ateneo de Manila University Press. Among his research and publications are:
Materiales Ligeros versus Materiales Fuertes: The Conflict Between Nipa Huts and
Stone Buildings in 19th Century Manila, dans Elmer A. ORDONEZ (éd.), The Philippine
Revolution and Beyond, Manille, Philippine Centennial Commission and the National
Commission for Culture and the Arts, 1998, vol. 1, pp. 160-172
Shifts in Meaning of “Manila” in the Nineteenth Century, dans Charles J.-H.
MACDONALD et Guillermo M. PESIGAN (éds), Old Ties and New Solidarities. Studies on
Philippine Communities, Quezon City, Ateneo de Manila University Press, 2000, 360
p., pp. 219-233
Provincial-Level Corruption in the Second Half of the Nineteenth Century, dans
Florentino RODAO et Felice Noelle RODRIGUEZ (éd.), The Philippine Revolution of 1896.
Ordinary Lives in Extraordinary Times, Quezon City, Ateneo de Manila University
Press, 2001, XX+316 p., pp. 217-230
If faculty members could have this opportunity to train under the esteemed faculty of
the Faculty of Letters, Arts and Humanities of the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis,
especially with the possibility of a full PhD scholarship grant to have more time for
this Bilateral Mobility Project, they would be able to:
1. Obtain a better understanding of the methods in which the Philippines is
viewed and studied in European universities.
2. Obtain exposure in the way Asian, Western and even Colonial Histories are
taught in prestigious European Institutions
3. Deepen their knowledge of Asian and Western Histories through exposure and
participation in classes held at European institutions
4. Have the opportunity to assist/collaborate with Professors from a European institution such as Dr. Xavier Huetz de Lemps in their research endeavors. This,
in turn, will better equip our Ateneo faculty members to guide students from
their home institution in their research projects.
5. Gain access to the specialized section on Asian Studies (Fonds Asemi) at the
University of Nice Library as well as utilize the vast resources on the history of
the Philippines in different languages, particularly, French, Spanish and English.
6. Return to home institution with a deeper understanding of Asian and Western
Histories and impart that experience and knowledge, especially to students
majoring in History
7. Improve and update the current course offerings of the Department of History
Program in the Ateneo to keep up with the world class academic systems
8. Acquire knowledge in a foreign language (French)
9. Serve as a link between the two universities or programs to establish longterm cooperation.
