To make a difference. To help students in need. To ensure the world is a better place for future generations. In broad terms, these are the reasons people make gifts to St. Edward’s University every year. Looking back at 2004–2005 — a year of record-breaking enrollment, retention and fundraising — this report shares the stories behind the gifts made by many of the university’s generous benefactors. As we look to the future, it is clear how St. Edward’s will achieve its goals: through the support of alumni, faculty and staff, parents, foundations, corporations, and friends — like those whose gifts you’ll read about on the following pages. We appreciate all that you have done to help the university progress toward completion of its current comprehensive campaign, ensure educational excellence, and attain the St. Edward’s vision to be recognized among the best small universities in the nation. board of trustees Myra A. When he decided to make a gift to St. Edward’s University, he wasn’t sure how he should designate it. So Kolodzey contacted University Advancement at St. Edward’s and began to explore his giving options as well as the university’s current needs. Ultimately, he chose to create a charitable gift annuity, which allowed him to make a $1 million gift of assets and retain earnings from those assets for the rest of his life. He also learned that he could provide the lead gift for a new chapel. “It was all timing,” he said, “perfect timing.” Why? Kolodzey cherishes the experiences he had as a student at St. Edward’s, particularly because of the Holy Cross Priests and Brothers and lay faculty members he came to know. “Being associated with the Congregation of Holy Cross and faculty at St. Edward’s, where you really become part of a family, is the one thing that has helped me more than anything else in my life.” That help ranged from the intangible to the tangible, he says. Kolodzey, a retired engineer from Exxon, credits his early education from the Holy Cross Priests and Brothers with providing the foundation for his career. He went on to study at UT–Austin and later worked as a professional civil engineer. After he was hired by Humble Oil, Kolodzey was recommended by his former professors at UT–Austin to join the team designing offshore oil platforms. In fact, he worked on the facility for the very first offshore oil rig deployed in the Gulf of Mexico. And he has passed on his love for St. Edward’s to his granddaughter, Heather, who graduated from St. Edward’s in May 2005. “When my grandfather talks about how St. Edward’s has contributed to his life, I know exactly what he means,” she explained, “because the university has meant just as much to me.” Charles Kolodzey, ’36 (center), and his granddaughter Heather, ’05, review the works of Rick Joy (right), the architect who will design the university’s new chapel. Internationally acclaimed and award-winning architect Rick Joy of Rick Joy Architects, Tucson, Ariz., was selected in April to design a new landmark chapel and Holy Cross Institute on campus after a yearlong selection process that had been narrowed to a field of three prominent American architecture firms. Joy is the winner of the 2004 National Design Award in Architecture from the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt. The $5 million chapel will house a 300person sanctuary along with the offices of Campus Ministry and the Holy Cross Institute. A joint initiative of the university and the Holy Cross Brothers, the institute will provide resources and programs for educators and lay members at Holy Cross schools and universities across the country. In addition to the $1 million lead gift commitment from alumnus Charles Kolodzey, ’36, the university has received pledges and gifts from several alumni and parishioners as well as a $50,000 planning grant from the Scanlan Foundation of Houston. a new landmark chapel honor roll of donors Holy Cross Associates Members support the university through annual gifts of $10,000 or more. Martin told her about the Phase II science facility for Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics, it made perfect sense to direct her gift toward it — considering her late husband Frank’s love for science and engineering. A science laboratory in the facility will be named the Sue and Frank McBee Laboratory in their honor. Sue and Frank, who served as a St. Edward’s trustee from 1991 until his death in 2000, have had ties to St. Edward’s for so long that she jokes about not remembering how they first became involved. “We have always been friends of St. Edward’s, and I’m glad to see the university growing the way it is,” said McBee. “It’s a good school where students can get a lot of individual attention.” The McBees have been active in education, fine arts and historic preservation in the Austin community since the 1950s. Sue, an avid reader, author and book collector, was founding president of the Austin History Center. Drawing on her experiences starting that archive, she has provided counsel to the St. Edward’s library staff and once donated a generous portion of her collection of books, including many with autographs and special inscriptions from authors. “I’ve always believed in libraries,” said Sue, recalling memories of visiting the city library each Saturday as a child and picking out six or seven books she would read the following week. Additionally, she has helped Library Director Thomas Leonhardt by introducing him to members of the literary community. Leonhardt appreciates her support. “Sue has been around literature and writers her whole life and she understands the important role a great library plays in shaping a great university.” 11 Sue McBee chats with Scarborough-Phillips Library Director Tom Leonhardt. Science facilities — the space that students and faculty share to teach, learn and collaborate — are critical to the success of a science program. While the current science facilities at St. Edward’s offer less than one quarter of the space available at benchmark schools with a similar profile, the two-phase science facility St. Edward’s has planned will remedy this situation. Fundraising is complete for the Phase I facility, the John Brooks Williams Natural Sciences Center, and the center is already under construction. It will meet the immediate needs of Biology and Chemistry students and faculty. Phase II, the science and technology building, will provide space for Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics. St. Edward’s is actively fundraising to construct the $15 million Phase II facility. science facilities of the highest caliber honor roll of donors 12 Angela Lucas, ’80 F Robert Lucash, ’72 F * Mr. Steven Martin and Ms. Amy Haddad Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mauro * Samuel F. In December 2004, St. Edward’s successfully completed a challenge grant from the Mabee Foundation of Tulsa, Okla. — six weeks before the fundraising deadline. The grant provided the final $2 million needed for the $20 million John Brooks Williams Natural Sciences Center. Along with the initial $500,000 gift to the challenge made by Ross and Laurie Garber, additional gifts of $100,000 were made by University Federal Credit Union, Meadows Foundation, Carl B. King Foundation and Texas Gas Service. And a range of trustees, alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends — more than 170 individuals overall — also made gifts for the challenge. The final gift — totaling $385,000 — came from Pat, ’97, and Bill Munday. Set to open in Fall 2006, the new sciences center will quadruple the space available at St. Edward’s for science instruction by providing 65,000 square feet for classrooms, laboratories and faculty offices for biology, chemistry and general science education. challenge grant leverages gifts T Tzedakah. The Hebrew word for “charity” encompasses a call to give to others in the pursuit of justice and fairness. At its highest level, tzedakah helps the recipient become self-reliant. For the Garber family — who provided a $500,000 lead gift in Fall 2004 to meet the Mabee Challenge for the new John Brooks Williams Natural Sciences Center at St. Edward’s — tzedakah is a core value. “We live tzedakah every single day,” explained Laurie Garber. For example, Ross just finished a two-year term as the unpaid, full-time president of the Austin Jewish Academy, and Laurie formed Loving Hands, Loving Hearts, a group of 10 women who gather to bake or buy supplies for a local organization each month. The Garbers were first introduced to St. Edward’s when Trustee Stephen M. Jones, MBA ’94, invited Ross, a retired software entrepreneur, to lecture in a business course he was teaching at the university. “As we became more familiar with St. Edward’s, it was clear that we share a common mission: to make sure that people who have potential can access education,” said Laurie. For Ross, President George E. Martin exemplifies this commitment. “He has been remarkably helpful with our other charitable interests and has become a true family friend,” Ross explained. “When I asked him to join the Austin Jewish Academy Board of Directors, he not only said yes but also contributed countless hours of his personal time to a major turnaround of that organization.” At St. Edward’s, the Garbers first considered supporting the university’s College Assistance Migrant Program, which aids talented students with limited economic means. Ultimately, they directed their gift toward the sciences center because it provided the most leverage: The Mabee Challenge doubled the Garber Family Foundation’s gift, and through the university’s general education curriculum, the sciences impact most every student at St. Edward’s. “We’ve wanted for a long time to make a significant gift to the science field to help what we cannot even imagine yet,” said Laurie. “We believe we’re helping students at St. Edward’s get a great education in a beautiful science facility, while also helping them develop scientific knowledge for the benefit of generations to come.” 15 honor roll of donors 16 Murray, MAHS ’95, and Kim Francois Mr. Austin A. Dan Beck, ’04, and Assistant Professor of Education Barbara Frandsen are longtime supporters of the Faculty/Staff Campaign. • $25: One new book for the library • $50: Carton of beakers for a science laboratory • $250: 30 hours of one-on-one tutoring for a student • $500: Graduate school guides from the Office of Career Planning • $750: Costumes for a Mary Moody Northen Theatre production • $2,500: Academic scholarship, based on a $50,000 endowment • $5,000: Presidential Excellence Grant for faculty research • $9,500: Virus protection software for every student on campus • $20,000: Peru Immersion Service-Learning Experience for 14 students every gift counts A At universities across the country, 13 percent of faculty and staff members regularly give back to their workplaces. At St. Edward’s, it’s nearly seven times that. In 2004–2005, 87 percent of St. Edward’s employees made gifts to The St. Edward’s Fund, which supports student scholarships, faculty development and program needs. The success of last year’s campaign is due in part to the efforts of Assistant Professor of Education Barbara Frandsen and University Police Department Lt. Dan Beck, ’04, who not only gave to the campaign but also served on the 2004–2005 Faculty/Staff Campaign Committee, a volunteer group that encourages fellow employees to give. Frandsen has made annual gifts to The St. Edward’s Fund since she arrived on campus in 1988, which has earned her the distinction of being the longest consecutive giver among faculty and staff members. She has served on the committee for the past five years. “I believe in the mission and goals of St. Edward’s, and I feel fortunate to work here. Giving back to the university is a way for all of us who work here to show our appreciation and to help continue the working conditions that we enjoy,” she said. Beck has supported The St. Edward’s Fund since 1989, when he came back to campus as a full-time police officer. He has served on the committee for the past five years. “I try to encourage people to participate by making personal contact with them. There are a lot of new employees — and alumni who come back to campus as employees — who don’t know what The St. Edward’s Fund is about. The Faculty/Staff Campaign represents the best of St. Edward’s, and I want to let everyone know that every dollar given is important and does make a difference.” 19 honor roll of donors 20 Individual Contributors Members support the university through annual gifts of $1 to $119. Robertson Jr., chairman of the Cullen Trust for Higher Education, describes the John Brooks Williams Natural Sciences Center at St. Edward’s University. And that’s one of the reasons the Cullen Trust provided a $250,000 grant for the center. “Science has many applications, including those in healthcare and environmental areas that are important initiatives for our next generation,” said Robertson. He also believes the new science facility at St. Edward’s will help draw highly qualified students and faculty to the university. “Attracting good people is very important, and good facilities help.” Besides the fact that he has known a number of students who attended St. Edward’s and benefited from the experience, Robertson cites the trio of endorsements from university trustees J. William “Bill” Sharman Jr., hs ’58, Gregory A. Kozmetsky, ’70, and Duncan Underwood, ’95, as important factors in the Cullen Trust’s decision to award the grant to St. Edward’s. “I have a great degree of confidence in these people,” Robertson explained. “St. Edward’s has a great group of leaders looking after the university — the trustees and the management.” “St. Edward’s stands out amongst small universities and has a great mission; the new science facility will help support that mission.” 23 Trustees Gregory A. Kozmetzky, ’70 (far left), J. William Sharman Jr., hs ’58 (below), and Duncan K. Underwood, ’95 (right), provided critical endorsements for the university’s grant proposal to the Cullen Trust for Higher Education. Trustee Duncan K. Underwood, ’95, understands the significant boost that state-of-the-art facilities provide to an educational institution. In the past, that’s led him to link St. Edward’s with his family’s foundation, The Fondren Foundation of Houston, to transform the old student union into Fondren Hall, which now houses the university bookstore, and to support construction of Trustee Hall, an academic building with hightech classrooms that opened in 2002. Recently, he joined trustees J. William Sharman Jr., hs ’58, and Gregory A. Kozmetsky, ’70, to make calls and send letters endorsing the university’s $250,000 grant proposal to the Cullen Trust for Higher Education — efforts that were critical to the proposal’s success. “As an alumnus and trustee, I’m always pleased to help the university attain its goals for growth in terms of facilities and reputation and service to students,” Underwood said. trustee stewardship aids major grant proposals honor roll of donors 24 Mr. Roberto C. University Federal Credit Union encourages members of the St. Edward’s community to take control of their financial health by offering helpful resources to university faculty and staff members, students, and alumni, including: • Direct deposit with various checking account options — including free electronic checking and student checking • Competitive rates for car loans and mortgages • Home, auto & life insurance • More than 200 zero-fee ATMs around Austin and Galveston (including one at the St. Edward’s campus — located in the Robert & Pearle Ragsdale Center) • Zero-percent Stafford student loans • Retirement and investment counseling Learn more at www.ufcu.org. financial resources for students, faculty & staff U University Federal Credit Union started in 1936 as an alternative to conventional banking. Nearly 70 years later, UFCU still provides a valuable banking alternative to its members and generous support for the higher education community in Austin, including St. Edward’s. As a member of the UFCU family, St. Edward’s has benefited from ongoing UFCU support for Athletics and campus-wide events such as Homecoming, Orientation and Welcome Days. Last November, UFCU pledged $100,000 toward the new John Brooks Williams Natural Sciences Center. “We identified a need and wanted to help out,” said UFCU CEO and President Tony Budet. “It’s easy to write a check for Athletics and see your logo on a scoreboard — the result is immediate. But we felt that financially supporting a major initiative like a new science building would ultimately open more doors for students.” In addition to its philanthropic investment, UFCU provides financial services and consumer education for students, faculty and staff at St. Edward’s, and Budet credits personal relationships as key to the credit union’s continued success. “Relationships are all there is, and for us, money isn’t the bottom line, people are,” he said. “This gift is an opportunity for us to grow our relationship with St. Edward’s, support the higher education community and invest in the city.” 27 honor roll of donors 28 Mr. Willie H. Now he and his wife, Terralynn, are honoring his mother — and her philosophy — by making gifts totaling $350,000 to create the Edith Jackson Swift Memorial Endowed Scholarship. They chose St. Edward’s because they have seen firsthand how the university delivers on its promise of a personalized education by watching their son Nicholas, ’07, find his niche as an Art major. “I’m an engineer and an oil field guy in my heart,” said Swift, who founded Swift Energy in Houston 25 years ago and holds an undergraduate degree in Petroleum Engineering (as well as an MBA and a JD). “I insisted that Nicholas take math and science courses at St. Edward’s. But he’s always had an inclination toward art, and at St. Edward’s he found he really loved art and was encouraged by the faculty members who came to know him.” Swift is impressed by how the university serves students from diverse backgrounds through the combination of small class sizes and a faculty dedicated to student success. For him, it’s an approach that is true to his mother’s spirit. And supporting St. Edward’s is a fitting tribute to her influence on his life. 31 Earl Swift (right) and President George E. Martin discuss the Edith Jackson Swift Memorial Endowed Scholarship. The Edith Jackson Swift Memorial Endowed Scholarship provides financial support to undergraduate students at St. Edward’s who demonstrate significant financial need. “My only criteria are that the recipient be a fully qualified, smart individual who hasn’t had all of the advantages,” said Earl Swift. “I’m looking for a student with will and determination to make it in life, if given the proper opportunity.” The first recipient of the scholarship fits the bill: Austin Gunter, ’09, doesn’t let rheumatoid arthritis slow him down. In fact, he used his entrepreneurial skills to raise the funds to pay for college expenses not covered by his full-tuition scholarship. scholarship honors a mother’s educational philosophy honor roll of donors 32 Ms. Marilyn Pearce * Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth M. Texas Gas Service is the third largest provider of natural gas services in the state, serving more than half a million customers. Founded in 1929 as Southern Union Gas, it was purchased by ONEOK Inc. in January 2003 and became part of a regional energy company with more than 2 million residential, commercial and industrial clients in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. Besides philanthropic gifts to education, arts and cultural organizations through the ONEOK Foundation, the company supports the United Way and encourages employee service through its Volunteers with Energy program. Visit www.texasgasservice.com to learn more about Texas Gas Service. texas gas service promotes philanthropic partnerships E Educational philanthropy is a top priority for Texas Gas Service and its parent company, ONEOK Inc., through the ONEOK Foundation. So the company’s recent $100,000 gift for the John Brooks Williams Natural Sciences Center at St. Edward’s made sense on many levels, says President Roger Mitchell. “We have a philosophy of making community investments that give back to the areas where we deliver natural gas service, and our giving tends to focus on education,” he explained. “We try to be mindful of the needs of the communities we serve and of our business when making our gifts. As an energy company, the natural sciences are a logical fit for us. We’re also a business, so business curriculum enhancement is attractive to us.” Texas Gas Service, and its predecessor, Southern Union Gas, have supported St. Edward’s since 1964. For its recent gift, the company initially considered supporting the Center for Ethics and Leadership. However, it designated the funds for the new natural sciences center because of the one-to-one match provided by a challenge grant from the Mabee Foundation, which both leveraged the gift and assured that the university could achieve broadbased support. “We view our gift as an investment in the Texas Gas Service partnership with St. Edward’s University to help students achieve excellence in their educational pursuits,” said Mitchell. “Ultimately it will benefit not just the students, but Texas and society in general as well, and sow the seeds for a successful future for all of us.” 35 honor roll of donors 36 Ms. Maribel Tostado Dr. James E. We know the institution will be around, thrive and grow beyond our lifetime.” And Margie should know; assessing philanthropic opportunities was central to another job she held, as manager of the corporate contributions program for the Intel Foundation. Under her leadership, Intel’s philanthropy grew from a $1 million U.S. program to a $150 million international program. Most important of all was the Kintzes’ desire to achieve two goals. “We wanted to support and enable deserving students to get a college education, and we wanted to ensure that Jimmy Mills’ legacy and lifetime dedication to St. Edward’s are forever recognized in a visible way,” Margie said. “Tom worked full time while attending college and that provides some of his inspiration for helping traditional undergraduate students attend college without the burden of a full-time job,” Margie explained. And both gifts the couple made honor Mills, professor emeritus of Biology, who retired in May 2004 after 32 years of service to St. Edward’s. Mills is thrilled with the tribute. “The current greenhouse is my favorite place on campus because it is so alive and so peaceful,” Mills said. “I hope the new greenhouse will be as meaningful to future members of the St. Edward’s community.” “Plus, I am honored to have a scholarship named for me and to know that generations of students will be able to experience St. Edward’s because of it.” 39 Margie and Tom Kintz (right) join Professor Emeritus Jimmy Mills (far left) and Sarah Gray, ’08 (above, left), the first recipient of the scholarship they endowed, to review plans for the new greenhouse they funded. Both the scholarship and greenhouse are named in honor of Mills. Sarah Gray, ’08, is the perfect inaugural recipient of the Jimmy T. Mills Endowed Scholarship, which honors the professor emeritus who taught Biology at St. Edward’s for more than 30 years. She is a Biology major and has a profound interest in both the sciences and health. In fact, she plans to become a doctor of osteopathic medicine. “It is a system of medical care that promotes the body’s innate ability to heal itself while still taking advantage of all of the benefits of modern medicine and technology,” Sarah explained. And she’s grateful for the scholarship created by Trustee Margie Diaz Kintz and her husband, Tom — as well as the example their gift sets. “The Kintzes have not only helped me financially through the scholarship but also boosted my morale and self-worth. Without generous deeds like theirs, many of us would forget why it is important to make a difference in the world.” scholarship recipient values donors’ example heritage society 40 Members have made a planned gift benefiting St. Edward’s University. Campaign highlights from the 2004–2005 fiscal year: • Gifts and pledges reached $10.95 million for the period July 1, 2004, to June 30, 2005. St. Edward’s within $10 Million of Campaign Goal • The $7.5 million pledge from the estate of John Brooks Williams for the new John Brooks Williams Natural Sciences Center — the lead gift in the campaign — was paid in full. • St. Edward’s benefited from a 57 percent increase in gifts and pledges of $25,000 or more. • More than 50 individuals have created or added to an annual or endowed scholarship fund at St. Edward’s since the start of the campaign. Plus, a recent $1.1 million gift from the estate of Austinite Catherine Dunlap pushed St. Edward’s beyond its $10.5 million goal for scholarships. • 311 donors answered the call to become a St. Edward’s Associate (see Honor Roll, pages 8–37) by making an annual gift of $1,000 or more to the university to provide vital support for programs, scholarships and faculty research. • At the St. Edward’s Associates level, alumni membership grew by 30 percent and parent membership increased by 63 percent. • The Faculty/Staff Campaign benefiting The St. Edward’s Fund achieved 87 percent participation (see story, pages 18–19). • Planning began for the new chapel. On Aug. 3, Tucson-based architect Rick Joy met with administrators, trustees and lead gift donor Charles Kolodzey, ’36, and his granddaughter Heather, ’05, to kick off planning (see story, pages 6–7). 47 Construction of the 65,000-square-foot John Brooks Williams Natural Sciences Center is progressing ahead of schedule. The facility is set to open in Fall 2006. The center’s roof is in place, and workers are rapidly constructing the exterior brick walls. The process sets the stage for interior construction involving drywall, flooring and builtin furnishings later this fall.
