Largest 100 Credit Unions / Caisses Populaires
As of fourth quarter 2013, the 366 credit unions and caisses populaires outside of Quebec reported combined
assets of $169.7 billion, a six-month increase of 2.8 per cent over second quarter 2013.
The largest 100 credit unions and caisses populaires reported a higher six-month asset growth rate of 3.6 per
cent over mid-year 2013 results. At fourth quarter 2013, the largest 100 credit unions reported assets of over
$146.8 billion. Amalgamations throughout the credit union system continue to increase this group’s proportion of
system assets. The top 100 credit unions account for 86.5 per cent of total system assets in the country
(excluding Quebec).
The largest 10 credit unions reported slightly higher growth than the entire top 100 group. With a 3.9 per cent
increase in 6-month growth, these 10 credit unions increased their control to 45.9 per cent of system assets. The
appearance of the top 10 credit unions has changed over the last six months. Alberta’s Servus Credit Union
moved to second position. In turn, Coast Capital

The credit unions ranked 11 to 100 recorded a six-month increase of 3.2 per cent. Noteworthy, for the first time a
Prince Edward Island credit union was included in the top 100 listing. As a result of the amalgamation between
Metro Credit Union and Stellas Maris Credit Union, the newly named Provincial Credit Union was ranked in 98 th
position. Assets in the remaining part of the system experienced a decline of 1.7 per cent.
Regional representation on the list is as follows: B.C., 25; Alberta, 11; Saskatchewan, 9; Manitoba, 18; Ontario,
28; New Brunswick, 5; Nova Scotia, 2; Prince Edward Island, 1; and Newfoundland, 1.
