Job Title: Urban Ranger

ABOUT ELK
ELK is a Denver-based, 501(c)3 organization established in 1996 by two wildlife biologists who saw a
growing need to introduce and educate Colorado’s urban youth about science, leadership and careers. ELK’s
mission is to cultivate a passion for science, leadership, and service in a diverse community of learners.
SUMMARY
Urban Rangers employment program is a partnership between Environmental Learning for Kids, the
National Park Service, and Denver Parks & Recreation. Urban Rangers will gain valuable experience in
teaching natural science-based curriculum, conduct fishing clinics, assist with prep of educational programs,
be exposed to many areas of all three partnership organizations and will participate fully in our busy 2015
Summer. Urban Rangers will be introduced to careers within the field of natural resources and management,
and have the opportunity to network and gain professional development experience.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
 Delivers educational programs around natural resources and science-based curriculum; including aquatic
ecology and fishing clinics, Colorado wildlife education programs, archery, and other community and
outreach programs and overnight camping trips.
 Conduct fishing clinics
 Willingness to be outdoors for extended periods of time
 Be knowledgeable in basic fish biology (training provided)
 Be knowledgeable in basic fishing techniques (training provided)
 Have a strong/loud voice for doing presentations in front of kids and families
 Enjoy interacting and presenting to kids who are participating in fishing /educational programs
 Make fishing rods
 Clean up fishing equipment and working site
 Assists with year-round program activities; including: camping trips, visits to state and national parks,
community programs and outreach events
 Assist with crew leaders/supervisors whenever assistance is needed
 Be professional and accountable
 Contributes to a positive, productive workplace through open communication, problem solving, sense of
humor, adventurous spirit and dedication to achieving ELK’s goals and mission.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education: Must be currently enrolled in High School or College
 Must be available from June 8th- August 16th.
 Ability to speak comfortably to large groups of children and adults
 Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and written and oral communication skills
 Team Player who is open minded and flexible
 Reliable transportation
REASONING ABILITY AND APPROPRIATE CONDUCT
Must be able to work with other crew members and resolve any problems in an orderly fashion. Good
teamwork and communication is necessary as all crew members will spend summer together on a daily basis.
Understand that while working with younger kids they must show leadership skills and act appropriately.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to
successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the
employee is required to stand, walk, sit, hike, wade in rivers, climb through brush, handle
wildlife/fish/insects, and work with their hands.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The Urban Rangers work schedule will vary from week to week. Most weeks the Urban Rangers will work
part-time (30hrs/week). The employee will be outside in the field in adverse weather, snow, rain, wind, sun
for extended periods of time, sometimes days. The employee will be expected to camp on the ground with
minimal accommodations. Employees must be good with children and have good people skills. Employees
must be ready, patient and quick to adapt to different types of kids. Proper and appropriate clothing is
required. An ELK or Urban Ranger shirt must be worn when working with kids or families.
