Media Release Embargoed until 12.01am on 29 June 2014 News Corp Australia launches 10th Pride of Australia Awards Pride of Australia, the community awards initiative which has honoured more than 550 Australians, is marking its tenth anniversary, News Corp Australia announced today. The unique awards program, which recognises unsung heroes in communities across the country, has shared more than 19,000 stories of inspiring and selfless contributions since its launch in 2004. Previous recipients have included: • Judith O’Hearn, a Paralympic gold medallist who has worked to improve the lives of people with disabilities; • Luke Owens, who set up a homeless centre for young people and raised a staggering $500,000 in nine months; and • Maggie Burns, who, together with her husband Ronnie Burns, established the Appin Hall Children’s Foundation, a respite centre for seriously ill and disadvantaged children. News Corp Australia’s newspapers are asking their readers to nominate people in their community for a Pride of Australia award. News Corp Australia’s chief executive officer, Julian Clarke, said: “Over the last 10 years Pride of Australia has honoured people whose extraordinary acts of courage, dedication to helping others and commitment to what they believe in have improved the lives of countless Australians. “This year our metropolitan, regional and community papers will bring the inspiring stories of past and current Pride of Australia winners to our millions of readers, and appropriately recognise their significant contribution to making Australia a better place. The awards bring a spotlight to marvellous Australians who contribute so much, without any desire for personal reward or recognition,” Mr Clarke added. Pride of Australia will be supported by the Herald Sun, The Daily Telegraph, The Courier-Mail, The Advertiser (Adelaide), NT News, The Mercury, our network of Sunday newspapers, PerthNow, news.com.au and all of News Corp Australia’s regional and community titles. As the program’s broadcast partner, Network Ten will once again extend the reach of the Pride of Australia program and will broadcast the National Medal Ceremony. …cont. over/ NEWS LIMITED • ABN 47 007 871 178 • 2 HOLT STREET • SURRY HILLS • 2010 • NSW • AUSTRALIA Media Release Network Ten’s chief executive officer, Hamish McLennan, said: “Pride of Australia is an extremely important initiative, giving much-deserved recognition to people who work tirelessly, selflessly and in anonymity for the benefit of their communities and all Australians. “This year marks the third year that Network Ten has been Pride of Australia’s broadcast partner and we are honoured to be able to bring to our viewers the inspiring, moving and life-affirming stories that will emerge from the 2014 Awards.” This year will also see NOVA Entertainment come on board Pride of Australia as radio partner to extend the reach of the program even further.
