Charles P. Allen High School
Providing a high quality education for every student every day.
Dear Students and Parents:
Welcome to the 2015/2016 school year at Charles P. Allen High School. This is a going to be another exciting year at Charles P.
Allen! Our new school has state-of-the-art technology, beautiful windows and bright colours. We will continue to enjoy performances in our enhanced cafeteria and cheer on our Cheetahs in our beautiful gym and artificial turf! Our learning studios along
with our study zones, academic commons and quiet zones will support your academics using new technology.
2015-2016 promises to be another great year in the long tradition of excellence that has become synonymous with CP Allen High
School. This practice of doing our personal best extends into the areas of academics, athletics and fine arts. Here, you will have
the opportunity to develop and hone your skills, talents and abilities to become a school and community leader. All of this can
happen when you take advantage of all that school can offer and if you apply yourself to becoming part of the CP Allen team.
There is something for everyone here at CPA from the wide-range of academic opportunities to many extra-curricular clubs,
teams and activities. We have a strong culture of community and school spirit throughout the halls and with the hard work and
involvement of our Student Council, this spirit is celebrated throughout the year.
Our motto is ‘Striving for Excellence’ and it is a statement we embrace as a community in our staff, volunteers and students.
The best high school memories are made when you strive to do your personal best, become involved and keep a positive attitude.
The staff of CPA are here for students and parent/guardians so please don’t hesitate when you need extra help, support or guidance. If you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
This communication package will assist you with planning and will make the first days and weeks of the school year more manageable. Please take the time to read the information contained in this package. If there is any important medical information we
should be aware of, it is important that you fill out the medical information forms located under the parent section of our website
and either drop them off to the main office or email them to cpah@hrsb.ns.ca. I also encourage you to log into PowerSchool Student/Parent portal regularly to check attendance and marks (see Web-Based Student Information System below).
Once again, welcome to the new school. Please check the website regularly for new information regarding our first day of school
on Wednesday, September 2rd. I wish all of you success this school year.

Web-Based PowerSchool Student Information System
The Halifax Regional School Board continues to use the Student Information System (SIS). The system allows students and parents to log on to
their own private online account and see grades, track attendance, learn
about upcoming assignments, and catch up on school events and announcements.
Information will be made available about how to log on to a private account and access real-time information. The system includes a student
and parent portal, enabling students and parents to see similar information such as attendance, grades, assignments, teachers’ comments and
upcoming school events. Students and parents will be able to log on anywhere there is internet access such as home work or school. The benefits of this new system extend beyond convenience and fast access. The
SIS will allow teachers to accomplish much more in less time – freeing
them up to be more students-focused.

Quick Reference Chart
1) To get an account or reset a forgotten password, please email Ms. Meek (cmeek@hrsb.ns.ca) or Ms. Lowe
(lowea@hrsb.ns.ca).
2) Access the Parent/Student Portal here: sishrsb.ednet.ns.ca
3) A summary of the screens you will see
• Grades and Attendance: shows a two-week window of attendance, current grades, grades
from last semester, and total number of missed/tardy classes.
• Attendance History: detailed attendance for the full year.
• School Bulletin: the school is not using this feature.
• Class Registration: will be available when we begin course selection for next year. Check
the main webpage regularly for more info.
• Account Preferences: to change your password and other settings.
4) What do the attendance codes mean?
• U = unexcused absence
• E = excused absence
• L = late to class
• ACT = absent due to school-based activity
• SC = absent due to special circumstance
• OSS / ISS = Out-of-school / In-school suspension
5) What do S1, F1, etc mean?
• S1: term mark at the end of 1st semester.
• E1: exam mark from 1st semester. Will be blank if student is exempted from exams.
• F1: final mark in course (comprised of S1 and E1).
• Q3: Current mark for 2nd semester courses. This mark will change until the mid-term report period, at which time it
will be recorded as an interim mark.
• Y1: Will be shown after mid-terms. Y1 will be recorded at the end of 2nd semester as the term mark.
6) Remember, any text colored blue can be clicked for further information.
7) Clicking on a grade will show you the assessments that comprise the grade. The bigger the
denominator (the “out of” mark), the more value toward final grades within each unit. In the example below the
mark out of 16 has almost 5 times the value as the mark out of 3.
8) Each category might contain labs, quizzes, essays, tests, etc. Email the teacher if you need clarification or a course
outline.
The course outline describes how the course is graded.

ATTENDANCE/ABSENCES
If your son/daughter is excusably absent, parents/guardians need to call the school attendance line @ 902-832-8964
ext. 1 to inform the school. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE ATTENDANCE MESSAGES FOR ADMINISTRATORS OR
TEACHERS. DO NOT SEND EMAILS OR LETTERS FOR ATTENDANCE PURPOSES.
The attendance line is used to enter attendance directly into the school’s computer system to inform both subject teachers and administrators of students who will not be attending for that particular day. The attendance line is available 24
hours a day, 7 days a week and is checked and logged in PowerSchool in the morning and then again at 3pm each
school day for your convenience.
At the end of the day, an automated call will be forwarded to your home telephone and email to notify of any unexcused
absences.
11
Exam Exemption Eligibility
An exam exemption is an attendance incentive for students
who have near perfect attendance each semester.
A student may request to be exempt from no more than one
final assessment/examination per semester provided the
student has completed all major assessment components
and meets the criteria listed below:
For a student to qualify for an exam exemption, the student must not accumulate any more than:
•
6 excused absences in any course in which the student is enrolled within any one semester
•
6 lates in any course in which the student is enrolled within any one semester
•
0 unexcused absences in any class
•
0 out-of-school suspensions (dating back to the beginning of the semester)
•
Be in good academic standing in every class
What does “good academic standing” mean? This typically means that you have completed all of your major
assignments and tests. All of your teachers must be in agreement if you are to obtain an exemption.
Therefore, your teachers will be the people who determine if you are in good academic standing – if you have not
submitted a major assignment or project, or if you have skipped a test, then you have lost your exam exemption.
If you don’t know if you have an ‘unexcused’ or ‘late’, then log into PowerSchool and view your attendance records. If you require a PowerSchool account, please email lowea@hrsb.ns.ca to receive a login.
What exams cannot be exempt?
•
NSVS Exams
•
•
Students cannot exempt the Grade 12 common exams. We will follow the same expectations as if these were
provincial exams
Students in PreIB cannot exempt exams
•
IB Exams cannot be exempt
•
Math and English can not be exempt.
Exam Exemption Eligibility Lists will be posted on the bulletin board beside the main office
monthly beginning in November and up to the final exemption list prior to exams.
12
Students Going Away During School Time
Students who are going away on holiday or any other excused absence during
school time are responsible for making up any missed tests and completing missed
assignments. Students are responsible to contact each of their teachers to find out
what they will or have missed. Students who are away for more than 5 days at one
time are required to fill out an extended school absence form found on our CPA
website at www.cpa.ednet.ns.ca in the parent section under school forms. Students are not permitted to be away during exam weeks or for process exams.
Student ID’s
Students should be aware that an ID card is mandatory to take part in any school activity including sports teams, dances, coffee houses and spectator events. A student ID is also mandatory
to have textbooks and library books issued. The main office will NOT issue temporary ID
cards.
Use of Vapor Cigarettes
The use of vapor cigarettes or e-cigarettes, with or without nicotine filters, is not permitted to be
used by students on any school property. The use of chewing tobacco is prohibited.
EMERGENCY MEDICAL ALERT FORM
ALL PARENTS/GUARDIANS ARE REQUIRED TO FILL OUT THESE FORMS IF APPLICABLE. IT IS
IMPORTANT FOR SCHOOL STAFF AND ADMINISTRATION TO BE AWARE OF ANY MEDICAL
EMERGENCY INFORMATION. THESE FORMS ARE AVAILABLE ON OUR SCHOOL WEBSITE IN THE
PARENT SECTION UNDER DOCUMENTS AND FORMS.

Cyberbullying
Earlier this past year, bill 61 was passed in Nova Scotia. This bill is known as the CyberSafety Act and it is now law. In response to this new law the NS government has started 2
new initiatives to investigate cyberbullying: an online reporting system and the cyber-scan unit.
The law now defines cyber-bullying as any electronic communication through the use of any
kind of technology (phone, computer, ipad, tablet, social media networks – like twitter, instagram, ask fm, vine, IM, websites, email and others) that is intended or ought reasonably be
expected to cause fear, intimidation, humiliation, distress, or other damage or harm to another
person’s health, emotional well-being, self-esteem, or reputation AND includes assisting or
encouraging such communication in any way.
If you or someone you know is a victim of cyberbullying we encourage you to speak to a VicePrincipal. You can also go to the HRSB website and fill out an online reporting form that goes
directly to the school and we will investigate your complaint. What you need to know is that
once you have given us this information we can’t keep it confidential – we have to address the
situation and speak to the person you feel is cyberbullying. The second option is you or your
parents can email or call the Cyber-scan unit. Their email address is cyberscan.novascotia.ca.
