Course Description: This course surveys the visual arts (painting, sculpture, architecture) from
the Ancient through Modern periods. The course will introduce essential
issues and terminology of art history. Particular attention is placed on
interpreting the original meaning of the works of art and how they
functioned in their respective cultures.
Textbook:
Your assigned text is Gardner’s Art Through the Ages, eleventh edition. A
copy of the text is on reserve at the library. You may also want to
supplement your reading with in-depth studies in a particular area. Please
consult with me for additional bibliography, as the choices are plentiful.
Course Requirements and Grading:
Final grade:
400 total points comprise 100% of your final grade.
Your grade will be determined by four exams totaling 300 points (each worth 75 points and
75% of your final grade) and by your participation and attendance for 100 points (participation
is worth up to 60 points and attendance is worth up to 40 points, for 25% of your final grade).

an example of art work, including artist and title)

Participation:
Your participation in class is essential and a large portion of your final grade will depend upon
your continued commitment to class discussion. Speaking in class (60 points or 15%) and
attendance (40 points or 10%) are worth a total of 100 points of your final grade.
Asking questions, making comments, and/or reactions to what you see and read allow me to
know how you are progressing on a daily basis and allow you to develop communication skills
as you learn to synthesize material.
Your participation grade will be based on:
 Total number of days participation occurred
 Average number of comments made each day
 Quality of comments made including: evidence of having read text assignments, independent
and critical thinking, analysis of art works, synthesis of information, growth over the course
of the semester.
Attendance:
Due to the vast chronology and sheer number of stylistic periods covered in this course,
attendance to every class is mandatory. Attendance will be taken at the start of each class and
will be factored into your final grade. Your final grade will be penalized 7 points for each
absence if you miss more than three classes (excused or unexcused- this includes
participation in sports).
Policies:
Exams:
Exam dates appear on the syllabus schedule. Therefore, do not schedule job interviews, doctor
appointments, etc. during that time. As a general rule, make-up exams are not given unless there
are extenuating circumstances. If you miss an exam for an unacceptable reason, you will receive
a zero for that exam.
Academic Honesty:
As a minimum penalty, anyone cheating or plagiarizing will receive an F for the
exam/assignment. Stronger actions may be taken at the discretion of the professor.
Extra Credit:
There is no extra credit option for this course. The four scheduled exams, class participation and
attendance will comprise your final grade.
Course Withdrawal:
Withdrawal from this course is permitted only up through the college’s withdrawal date.
