National Multiple Sclerosis Society Ohio Buckeye Chapter MS: the power of connection Annual Report 2012 A couple makes a generous donation so children can make connections at C amp C onnect . A celebrity connects to riders by participating in the Bike MS Pedal to the Point Ride. connect connect Together to Learn About MS About Multiple Sclerosis Multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system, interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with two to three more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.1 million people worldwide. A man in Arizona clicks “share” on an article about how to keep health insurance coverage. About the National Multiple Sclerosis Society It stops a woman in New Hampshire from losing her health insurance, which means she can afford her daily medication. The National MS Society addresses the challenges of each person affected by MS by funding cutting-edge research, driving change through advocacy, facilitating professional education, collaborating with MS organizations around the world, and providing programs and services designed to help people with MS and their families move their lives forward. Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve quality of life for many people with multiple sclerosis. Talk to your health care professional and contact the National MS Society’s Ohio Buckeye Chapter at MSohiobuckeye.org or 1-800-344-4867 to learn about ways to help manage MS and about current research that may one day reveal a cure. 2 connect connect to Raise Awareness about MS Dear Friends and Supporters, In 2012, we were able to provide care and support to more than 11,100 people living with multiple sclerosis. This was made possible through the connections that we have made with people who want to create a world free of MS. These connections are vital as we strive to meet the challenges presented by MS. Fortunately, we have been able to meet those challenges by increasing our efforts to provide quality care in creative ways. For the first time, we were able to host a weekend camp for children due to a generous donation from two very special people who are committed to the MS cause. Their contribution to Camp Connect touched nineteen children and their families. Their smiles were precious and a reminder of why we exist. We were able to provide additional assistance to people with MS through several large bequests and many fundraising efforts including Walk MS, Bike MS and Dinner of Champions. It was a record year for our Bike MS event as the proceeds totaled more than $1.5 million and funds from our Dinner of Champions broke $500,000. We responded to over 87,000 inquiries for information about MS and answered the increased demand for durable medical equipment, home modifications, respite care, transportation and other services. We were also able to respond to an increase in the number of requests for emergency assistance and critical short-term needs such as rent and utility payments. MS is a complex disease and the reason why the National MS Society is diligent in funding research to stop the progression of the disease, restore lost function and end MS forever. In the Ohio Buckeye Chapter area, more than $6.3 million is being invested for 17 MS-related research projects. Worldwide, $44 million is being spent to support 350 research efforts. The momentum is continuing with the NOW: MS Research Revolution’s goal of raising $250 million. There is power in connection. By connecting people, resources and ideas we will find solutions and success in raising awareness about MS and the funds to find the cause and a cure for the disease. As we look forward to 2013, we ask that you make a connection to join the MS movement by becoming a donor, event participant, sponsor or volunteer. Thank you for connecting! Sincerely, Janet L. Kramer Chapter President Roy Smoot Chair, Board of Trustees 3 connect connect to Deliver Care and Compassion Students Benefit from Scholarship Program Leah and Mary Ann Wilson depend on each other to deal with the impact of MS on their lives. The Scholarship Program was established in 2003 for people living with MS or their children pursuing a college or technical school education. In 2012, the Ohio Buckeye Chapter awarded scholarships to nine students, the largest number ever presented in one year. Leah Wilson received a $3,000 scholarship to study nursing at Kent State University. Leah’s mom, Mary Ann, was diagnosed with MS 12 years ago so she fully understands the financial burden the disease can have on the family. Leah is the chief support for her mom who lives at a long-term care facility due to her MS symptoms. “My mom is my best friend,” Leah said. “When she was diagnosed with MS, both of our lives changed forever. The impact on my life has been huge but it has made me who I am today.” Bonds Built through Self-Help Groups Self-help groups bring people together who share a common life experience. Members connect with one another as they share their personal stories and daily struggles of living with MS. That’s why Thom DeMeo wanted to start a monthly self-help group meeting in Delaware County. The group, known as the Delaware Mighty Souls, celebrated their first anniversary in 2012. Thom, a former New Jersey State Trooper, was diagnosed with MS in 2009 which prompted a family relocation and new life in Ohio. He said he wanted to help people with MS and share an outlet with others who struggle with day-to-day life due to MS. One of the best benefits, according to Thom, is the friendships he has made with group members including his co-facilitator, Ron Nist. PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS 4 • 11,120 individuals served • 562 financial assistance requests • 475 holiday bag deliveries • 368 transportation services • 334 equipment loans and medical supplies • 308 home visits and peer support calls Ron Nist (left) and Thom DeMeo co-facilitate the Delaware Mighty Souls Self-Help Group. • 128 emergency services • 116 respite services • 56 legislative visits • 48 financial planning consultations • 39 accessibility modifications connect connect to Provide Relief and Resources MS Activists Educate Legislators Monitoring and acting on public policy issues that affect people with MS is a priority for the National MS Society. MS Activists, including Liz Thompson, visit local, state and federal legislators to educate them about MS. Liz, who has lived with MS since 1972, is a member of the Government Relations Committee. In January 2012, Liz provided testimony to the House Ways and Means Committee for the Ohio Livable Homes Tax Credit (HB 322). The bill would provide income tax credits for people putting accessibility features in their homes. Liz shared her personal story and how balance problems, numbness and fatigue have caused her to fall on several occasions. She urged legislators to consider the value of HB 322 so Ohioans could make home improvements, allowing them to stay in their home and be safe. She also attended MS Advocacy and Awareness Day in March 2012, one of 60 MS Activists who visited 50 state legislative offices to ask for support of HB 322. Liz Thompson and Representative Kenny Yuko attend a legislative breakfast during MS Advocacy and Awareness Day. Berlin Culver (holding volleyball) was one of 19 children who enjoyed the experience of Camp Connect. Children Enjoy Camp Connect Due to a generous donation from Gail and John Simonetti, the Ohio Buckeye Chapter was able to host a camp for children for the first time. Children in grades 2 to 7, who had an MS connection, were invited to attend Camp Connect, held June 2012 at Camp Lazarus in Delaware, Ohio. Nineteen children, including 9-year-old Berlin Culver, had the opportunity to learn more about MS and engage in activities including archery, canoeing, swimming, volleyball and a ropes course. Since Berlin’s grandmother has lived with MS for more than 30 years, Berlin knows about the challenges of the disease. She was able to connect with other children in a similar situation and have a worry-free weekend of fun.The camp allowed Berlin to overcome her shyness. She made friends and is looking forward to returning to camp in 2013. Berlin said she is grateful to the Simonettis since she “loved Camp Connect and always will.” 5 connect connect to Fund the MS Movement Bike MS Sets New Record The 2012 Bike MS Pedal to the Point Ride set a record for the largest number of riders and largest amount of funds raised, topping the $1.5 million mark. It was also a special year since Phil Keoghan, host of “The Amazing Race” participated in the event. Phil was able to connect with the riders including Gail and John Simonetti. Gail was diagnosed with MS in 1992 which prompted the couple to begin their 20-year involvement with the National MS Society. Initially, John volunteered at Bike MS but he loved the camaraderie of the riders so much, he decided to participate in the event in 2004. He is the team captain of “Gail’s Force Powered by Sunnyside Audi” and has been a top fundraiser every year. His efforts through the bike ride have generated more than $135,000 to benefit people living with MS. Phil Keoghan (center) made special connections with Gail and John Simonetti at Bike MS. Stephanie, Deb, Ed and Rachael Ferenc (from left to right) are motivated to raise funds for Walk MS. Walk MS Motivates Participants More than 8,400 walkers participated in the Walk MS event held at 12 sites in 2012. One family joined the Cleveland Walk MS at the Cleveland Browns Stadium for the fifth year in a row. Ed “Flash” and Deb Ferenc started a team when their daughter Stephanie was diagnosed with MS in 2008 when she was 18 years old. They called the team “Motivate Steph” and worked together to FUNDRAISING HIGHLIGHTS 6 raise awareness about MS and to raise funds to help others living with the disease. Three years later Stephanie’s twin sister, Rachael, was also diagnosed with MS. That made them even more committed to fighting MS. It also caused them to change the team name to “Motivate My Sister” and inspired some friends to double their donation to support the sisters. • $1.5 million from Bike MS • $1.1 million from Walk MS presented by EMD Serono/Pfizer • $544,000 from the Akron, Cleveland and Columbus Dinner of Champions • $461,000 through bequests and legacies • $169,000 in grant funding • $152,000 from major gifts • $91,000 through Do It Yourself events • $46,000 through the MS Walleye Fishing Tournament presented by Shamrock Companies, Inc. • $41,000 in tribute and memorial gifts • $31,000 through Run MS • $20,000 from Locavore connect connect to Drive Research to End MS Forever Researcher Commits to Finding Solutions Dr. Richard Ransohoff received the John Dystel Prize for his groundbreaking research. The commitment to MS research is stronger than ever and much advancement has been made to understand the disease and treat symptoms. One researcher, Dr. Richard Ransohoff of the Cleveland Clinic’s Lerner Research Institute and Mellen Center for MS Treatment and Research, was awarded the National MS Society/American Academy of Neurology’s 2012 John Dystel Prize for MS Research. Dr. Ransohoff was honored for his pioneering work in MS that led to new insights on immune activity in the brain and spinal cord, particularly the role of messenger proteins known as chemokines. He discovered that chemokines play an important role in MS, one that may lead to new MS therapies. The award which included a $15,000 prize was presented to Dr. Ransohoff at the American Academy of Neurology’s annual meeting in New Orleans in April 2012. Partnerships Lead to Optimal Care The National MS Society has a program called Partners in MS Care that recognizes and supports quality care by encouraging strong partnerships between MS clinicians and the Society. These partnerships help to develop a coordinated approach for comprehensive care needs and to expand clinical care and community-based services. The collaboration is meant to provide optimal care and support for people living with MS and their families. In 2012, the Ohio Buckeye Chapter acknowledged partnerships with four health care providers. Janet Kramer presented the Partners in Plaques were presented to the Cleveland Clinic’s Mellen Center for MS MS Care plaque to Dr. Aaron Boster at Treatment and Research, Neurology and Neuroscience Associates, the The Ohio State University MS Center.
