Material Safety Data Sheets Your Right To Know A Training Aid Provided By: SSDC 4050 Corporate Drive, #100 • Grapevine, Texas 76051 • 972-355-6900 • 1-800-532-7732 ©2010 Kay Chemical Company All Rights Reserved 38005-03 38005/7303/0510 Hazard communication This HAZARD COMMUNICATION PROGRAM Will Address Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Hazard Communication Standard For Proper Handling Of Hazardous Chemicals In The Work Place. Managers, It is required by law that all employers provide a comprehensive, written Hazard Communication for their employees concerning chemical safety in the workplace. This communication must be available for any employee or Official from OSHA or The Department of Labor at the time of request. OSHA requires in this communication: • A List of all Chemicals, hazardous or not, used in the work place. • A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for each of these chemicals. • A training program on chemical hazards in the work place. • Properly labeled containers to identify hazards. • Documentation that every employee has received this training on an annual basis. This Hazard Communication Program was designed to assist you in complying with OSHA (Title 29, 1910.1200) Hazard Communication regulations. However, it does not address additional state or local regulations you must also comply with. This program was designed to provide information covering its subject matter at the time of its preparation. SSDC takes no legal responsibility or obligation in interpretation of the laws or regulations. Federal, State and Local Laws may vary, so please consult with your legal adviser to assure your restaurant meets all applicable health and safety regulations. We hope this Hazard Communication Program will be an asset in your employee training. If you have any questions concerning this program, please contact SSDC at 1-800-532-7732. Hazard communication Managers As an employee, it is your Right-To-Know what the potential hazards are, if any, of the cleaning chemicals you come into contact with. Please read the Training Guide before you begin your employee training. We suggest the enclosed appendixes “A” through “D” be copied and used as handouts during your employee training. APPENDIX “A” Cleaning Chemicals “B” Terminologies & Definitions “C” How to interpret a Material Safety Data Sheet “D” Labeling Requirements “E” Employee Confirmation Training Log “F” Additional Chemicals Listing Hazard communication Training Guide Cleaning Chemicals (See APPENDIX “A”) APPENDIX “A” contains the list of cleaning chemicals provided by SSDC with HMIS Health Hazard Ratings. Please Note: HMIS Health Hazard Ratings are not required under the Right-To-Know laws, but you may find it useful in understanding how Caution and First Aid Statements on your cleaning products are determined. OSHA has a standard for Hazardous Material Identification System, or HMIS. This rating system is very similar to the National Fire Protection Association, or NFPA, Standard 704 in making signs to identify the hazards of materials. Both of these systems cover Health, Flammability, and Reactivity by utilizing a number system to quickly identify any hazard a chemical may have. It is the manufacturer's responsibility to determine the potential of their product and assign the corresponding number according to its hazardous potential. Similar products may have different ratings depending on the manufacturer. HMIS numeric system 0 = Minimal, 1 = Slight, 2 = Moderate, 3 = Serious, 4 = Severe. EXAMPLES 1 may represent; CAUTION: May Cause Eye and/or Skin Irritation. 2 may represent; WARNING: Causes Eye and/or Skin Irritation. 3 may represent; DANGER: Causes Eye and Skin Burns. 4 may represent; TOXIC: Poison. We have our products analyzed by independent laboratories to assure that the cleaners you use meet product specifications for heath and safety. It is your choice to you use the HMIS Health Hazard Ratings in your employee training. Hazard communication Training Guide Chemical Terminologies & Definitions (See APPENDIX “B” ) The terminologies and definitions used in this appendix are classified as your Right-To-Know information. This does not mean the cleaning chemicals you use carry these warnings, but these terms need to be understood by all employees. How to Interpret a Material Safety Data Sheet (See APPENDIX “C” ) This appendix is self explanatory. The MSDS is divided into 16 sections with explanations in each section. Labeling Requirements (See APPENDIX “D”) This appendix is a sample product label with the sections illustrated for training purposes. Employee Confirmation Training Log (See APPENDIX “E” ) Every employee, by law, must go through a Hazard Communication Program. We suggest this be a part of the employee’s orientation and administered at least annually thereafter. Every employer must keep a record of this training. This appendix is a log for this confirmation. If you require additional logs, call customer service at 1-800-532-7732, and we will be happy to mail them to you. Additional Chemicals Listing (See APPENDIX “F”) This appendix is for any other cleaning chemicals you have in your restaurant that are not covered in this communication. List these items in your log and be sure you have a Material Safety Data Sheet for each product. It is the manufacturer’s responsibility to rate their products, so similar products may have different ratings depending on the manufacturer. APPENDIX “A” Hazard communication Terminologies & Definitions Hazardous Chemical by OSHA’s definition is any substance or mixture that can produce negative effects on the health or safety of a person. These negative effects are broken into two categories, Physical and Health. Physical Hazard by definition is a situation where a chemical has the potential of reacting. EXAMPLE: Flammable products, such as alcohol and gasoline, would have the potential of starting a fire under the right circumstances. Health Hazard by definition is the potential the chemical has on directly affecting a person, whether it be instantaneous (Acute) or over an extended period of time (Chronic). Acute is defined as the short-term physical reaction of the body after overexposure. EXAMPLE: Eye irritant, such as getting shampoo, hand soap or dish detergent in your eyes. Chronic is defined as the long-term physical reaction of the body after overexposure. EXAMPLE: Carcinogenic, such as developing lung cancer from asbestos. Irritant is defined as having the potential of causing irritation, especially physical irritation. EXAMPLE: Tobacco smoke is a common eye irritant. Toxic is defined as capable of causing injury or death, especially by chemical means. EXAMPLE: A source of toxicity would be Cyanide or Hemlock. Exposure Limits, defined by OSHA as Permissible Exposure Limit, or PEL, which is calculated on an eight hour exposure without an acute effect. EXAMPLE: Isopropyl Alcohol CAS# 67-63-0 has a 400 ppm PEL exposure limit. This is the Rubbing Alcohol you can by in any grocery store. More than 400 ppm exposure could cause an acute effect, such as drying and cracking of the skin. Allergic is characterized by, or caused by, an allergy or reaction to something such as a chemical. EXAMPLE: Everyone is different. A bee sting to most is an irritant. To some, it can have an adverse effect. An example of an allergic chemical reaction could be a skin rash. Flammable is defined as easily ignited and capable of burning rapidly. EXAMPLE: Gasoline Combustible is defined as capable of igniting and burning. EXAMPLE: Cardboard boxes Corrosive is defined as having the capability or tendency to cause corrosion. EXAMPLE: The adverse effect of a corrosive acid on metal or skin. APPENDIX “B” APPENDIX “C” CHRONIC: The long-term physical reaction of the body after overexposure. SECTION 6 - ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES What to do if product is spilled SECTION 5 - FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES What to do if product has a special fire fighting hazard. SECTION 4 - FIRST AID MEASURES What to do if overexposure or accident occurs. ACUTE: The short-term physical reaction of the body after overexposure. Health would cover direct routes of entry (eye and skin contact, ingestion and inhalation) Fire would cover flammable potential. Reactivity would cover if and how reactive the product was with water or any material. SECTION 3 - HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION OSHA HMIS (Hazardous Material Identification System) For Health, Fire & Reactivity 0 = Minimal, 1 = Slight, 2 = Moderate, 3 = Serious, 4 = Severe. 1 for example may represent; CAUTION: May Cause Eye and/or Skin Irritation. 2 for example may represent; WARNING: Causes Eye and/or Skin Irritation. 3 for example may represent; DANGER: Causes Eye and/or Skin Burns. 4 for example may represent; TOXIC: Poison.
