EntrepreneursInTraining.net ! 3 Methods of the One Minute Manager! ! 1. One Minute Goal Setting.! • Write down clearly defined goals, one goal per single sheet of paper.! • The goals are than 250 characters.! • You should be able to express the goal in less than a minute.! • Look at the goals frequently, and determine how your behavior and performance matches up with the goals.! ! 2. One Minute Praising.! • Let someone know ahead of time you’re going to give them direct, detailed • • • • • ! feedback related to their performance.! When they do something right, praise them immediately.! State what specific behavior they did right.! State how it made you feel, or how it helps the business- the key here is to let them know you understand what they did.! Pause, to let the feeling sink in.! When appropriate, physically contact them, like a handshake or hand on the shoulder.! 3. One Minute Reprimand! A. The first half (the reprimand):! • Like the one minute praising, let the person know ahead of time you’ll be giving them these reprimands, and they too will be direct.! • Reprimand them immediately when they did something wrong, like not behaving in a way to achieve their goals.! • Criticize the behavior, not the person. There’s a big difference.! • Be specific and explicitly state what they did wrong.! • Let them know how it made you feel.! • Pause for an uncomfortable silence, let that feeling sink in.! B. The second half (uplifting):! • Let them know you value them.! • Again, you might shake their hand, touch them on their shoulder.! • Remind them, it’s the performance in this matter that you’re criticizing, but that you think highly of them.! • When you’re done reprimanding, remember your job is done. Let it go yourself.
