I would like to take a moment and share some thoughts about Rita
Van Wie, our greeter and associate in Panera Bread of Mineola, who
has been forced to retire “early” this past month due to medical
issues. Rita was the heart and soul of our cafe, and truly embodies all
that is “Panera Warmth” and “WOW.” She has been with Mineola
since the first day it opened, and has built close relationships and
created personal bonds with our guests over the past 8 years. Many
of these guests would literally plan their visits to the cafe around Rita’s
schedule so they could be greeted by Rita’s big smile at the door, and
feel like they were eating at the house of a friend or family member.
This is the atmosphere that Rita was naturally able to create around
her. Over the years there have been many changes in the cafe: menu,
associates, managers, décor, layout and prices – just to name a few.
One thing has remained constant throughout all of this time: Rita.
She truly enjoyed every second she was in the cafe. In fact, during
a tear-filled final day, she informed us all that she never considered
her job “work.” While we were thanking her for her great years of
service, she was thanking us all for making a second “family” for her
at Panera and Doherty. On a daily basis, there are too many guests
asking about Rita to even count, and this is the perfect illustration of
her value to us in the cafe, as well as to the company as a whole. She
will truly be missed in the cafe by all who worked with her, as well as
by the innumerable guests who she connected with over the years.
Thank you, Rita, and a big WOW!!!!

Doherty Enterprises Hosts
“Bring Your Child To Work Day”
On May 16th, Doherty Enterprises hosted a day-long program for
“Bring Your Child to Work Day” at the corporate office in Allendale.
Eight girls and boys in 1st through 8th grade got a “taste” of what it’s
like to work in the hospitality industry. This year’s theme was “Work in
Progress.” In the morning, the kids attended an activity related to the
theme of the day – they received a plain cupcake and their job was to
decorate and produce a finished product to their liking. This showed
the kids an example of how a work in progress is done. At lunchtime,
they enjoyed lunch with their parents at The Shannon Rose in Ramsey
and then they spent the afternoon with their parents and learned
about what their mom/dad does at work. Overall, it was a day of fun
that included educational and interactive activities. pictured left ◄

Piscataway Applebee’s Shakes It Up And
Donates Food For Dance Marathon
On April 19th, St. John’s University Staten Island campus hosted
its second Relay for Life. Once again, the university community
invited Panera Bread to be a part of this significant event in the fight
against cancer. More than 20 associates and managers from both
cafes represented the Panera Bread team as well as Area Director
Neilia Bissessar and Catering Manager Sandra Lopes. As walkers
approached the Panera table, team members WOWed each guest
with warm cookies, refreshing lemonade and a balloon-popping
game that assisted in raising funds for the Relay for Life Foundation.
Aside from being present at the event, the Staten Island cafes
also donated the proceeds from every chocolate chip cookie sold
between April 15th-21st to the foundation. In total, Panera Bread
Staten Island contributed $500 to the St. John’s University Relay for
Life. WOW! pictured below ▼
On the first Saturday in May, 300 volunteers were treated to a
Flapjack Fundraiser breakfast at Brentwood Applebee’s to kick start
the “Clean Streets Project.” Afterwards, residents gathered in masses
outside the Brentwood Applebee’s, ready to board buses that would
take them to 60 sites in Brentwood, Central Islip and North Bay Shore
for the clean up. At the end of the day, over five tons of trash had
been removed from the streets and empty lots. Returning volunteers
enjoyed a well-deserved barbecue courtesy of Applebee’s. Way to
go Brentwood team! pictured below ▼
The Piscataway Applebee’s team served food to over 650 dancers
during the Annual Rutgers’ Dance Marathon. The team loaded the
dancers up with carbohydrates, serving penne pasta and, of course,
a nice healthy salad to keep the dancers shaking it all night long to
raise funds for the Embrace the Kids Foundation – and it worked!
Over $505,000 was raised at the event, and the Butler Applebee’s
staff even received some air time on Magic 98.3 for their contribution!
