COTOBER 2014
Welcome to NDHS 2014-2015
Principal’s Message
Welcome to fall, 2014! A new year
begins, and we are off and running at
NDHS! Fall sports are going strong
with both our junior and senior
football teams having a successful
season. We also have girls’ rugby
and golf in full swing, and Mr.
Winslow has started the badminton
club on Tuesday nights. A big thanks
to all of those staff who give their time
to providing our students with
opportunities. For students who enjoy
music, Mr. Lean has the kids
strumming and singing tunes in guitar
club, and Ms Cockburn, who is new
to NDHS this semester, is heading up
a musical. There is lots to get
involved in, and something for
everyone. It is these special activities
which provide us with lasting
memories, so if your son or daughter
is not involved, encourage them to try
something.
While extra-curriculars are
tremendously motivating, what
happens in our classrooms is always
of the utmost importance. To help
your child be successful, encourage
them to review their notes every
evening. This will really help to
embed in their memory, the learning
from that day. It will also make
studying for tests and exams much
easier! Reviewing the day’s notes can
also reveal weak spots; concepts that
one didn’t really understand in class.
The best plan of action is to see the
teacher the next day to get
clarification. All of our teachers offer
extra help. Do encourage your child
to access it! Often, something that
can take 20 minutes to explain to a
whole class, can take 5 minutes oneto-one. Help your son or daughter to
form good habits. They will help
them, not only in high school, but for
the rest of their life.
I have mentioned one of our new
staff, Ms Cockburn, who is teaching
drama, but we have several other
new faces at NDHS this fall. A huge
welcome to Mr. Vanek and Ms
Ricker in our math department, Ms
Dingle in hospitality, Mrs. Clifford who
is an E.A., and Mrs. Gifford who is
our new Guidance Secretary. We
also welcome Mr. Todd Pottle as our
new vice principal. We are thrilled to
have all of these folks join us at
NDHS.
October 2014
Would you like to be more involved in
life at NDHS? We welcome any
parents who wish to join our School
Council. We meet once a month on
Mondays at 7 p.m. in the Staff Room.
We would love to see you at our next
th
meeting on Monday, October 20 !
Finally, please call us if you have any
questions, or if you just want to get an
up-date on how your child is doing.
We are always happy to have a chat.

NDHS Welcomes New Vice Principal
Hi Parents!
My name is Mr. Pottle
and I am very excited
to be in my new role
as half-time VP of
Norwood and halftime VP of eLearning.
I am thrilled to be
working with Ms.
Steinmann and the
fine staff at Norwood
High and am looking
very forward to the
year ahead. I have
been with KPR for a
number of years,
having taught at
Bowmanville High
School and Cobourg
West, as well as
working as a
Consultant and
Coordinator at the
Board office. I have
had a great first
month at our
wonderful school and
have been extremely
impressed by the
quality of
programming and
dedicated teachers,
support staff,
secretaries,
custodians, and
cafeteria staff we
have here. The
students have been
very welcoming,
which is a true
reflection of the
sense of pride and
community found
here at Norwood
High. The building is
vibrant with activity,
with rugby, football,
and golf seasons
underway, auditions
for the musical taking
place, college and
university visits,
preparations for this
year’s first school
dance (October 30th),
and more. Grade 9
Day and the
Welcome Back
Assembly were
remarkable and I feel
honoured to be one
of the newest
members of Spartan
House. I hope to
meet you at Parent
Teacher Interviews
on October 15th and,
if not, please feel free
to drop by or call at
any time.
Go Knights Go!

Curriculum & Classroom News
Last Monday night senior history
students participated in and
enjoyed a Medieval Banquet.
The softly lit Lecture Hall was
converted into a Great Hall with
heraldic shields decorating the
walls. The tables, set with
goblets and trenchers, were
occupied by participants
dressed in clothing reminiscent
of the Middle Ages. The food
served was prepared using
authentic Medieval recipes, and
the music played was actually
composed in the Middle Ages.
Following the evening repast,
guests learned a number of
period dances that helped work
off some of their dinner. The
night's entertainment concluded
with a demonstration of
armoured combat performed by
knights from the "Blades of
Glory".
Dual Credit Courses
Our Gr. 12 Manufacturing and
Hospitality students have been
