I NOTMEPRANRAI LS OD NO CMUAMT E C R NI XT VERITAS Backup Exec™ 9.0 for Windows Servers and the Windows Server Backup Utility 1. What is the Windows Backup Utility? The built-in backup utility (or applet) in Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 is designed to protect a standalone Windows server with a locally attached storage device. It meets the basic needs of operating system and file system protection for a single-server. More advanced features such as online data protection of database applications, open files, advanced media management, alerting, job management, and enhanced speed and flexibility are not included in the built-in backup utility. 2. Did VERITAS write the Windows Backup Utility? VERITAS actually developed the original code for the Backup Utility. VERITAS has had a strong relationship with Microsoft since Windows NT 3.1. In fact, for the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 launch, VERITAS provided the following: • • • • Backup Utility (co-developed with Microsoft) Logical Disk Manager (developed by VERITAS) Remote Storage Services (developed by VERITAS) Automated System Recovery (co-developed with Microsoft) 3. What is different in the Backup Utility for Windows Server 2003? There are three primary differences in the Backup Utility for Windows Server 2003 from previous versions. a) Revised Backup & Recovery Wizard The Backup Utility in Windows Server 2003 provides a revised backup and recovery wizard. When users launch the backup utility, they will immediately start in this wizard mode. What items the user chooses to backup will depend on whether or not the application will use the Automated System Recovery (ASR, which is discussed below). Should a user choose to backup the whole system, the user would use the Automated System Recovery. If the user only selects My Documents, for example, then (s)he would not user the Automated System Recovery. Clicking on the “Advanced Mode” selection will bring the user back to the traditional looking graphical user interface. VERITAS Backup ExecTM 9.0 for Windows Servers software not only offers a Backup and Recovery wizard, but offers many additional wizards, such as: • • • • • • • • • • Backup Wizard Restore Wizard Media Rotation Wizard Device Configuration Wizard Hot-swappable Device Configuration Wizard Media Set Wizard Logon Account Wizard Advanced Open File Wizard Exchange Backups Wizard SQL Backups Wizard These wizards help streamline day-to-day administration activities by simplifying the entire process of protecting your data. 10/10/2003 1 The redesigned interface of the Backup Exec 9.0 software really makes these tasks much easier. In fact, the interface has already drawn industry praise. “I found the completely redesigned browser-like user experience to be simple yet empowering.” - .NET Magazine, June 2003 “…we found the user interface seductive.” – Storage Magazine, March 2003 “Backup Exec excels by tying complex features seamlessly into an intuitive Web-based interface.” - PC Magazine, March 2003 b) Support For Microsoft Volume Snapshot Services (also known as “Volume Shadow Copy”) Windows Server 2003 introduces support for Volume snapshot services, or Volume Shadow Copy services. Specifically, if a user selects to backup a volume that has Shadow Copy components on it, everything automatically gets backed up. There is a checkbox for "Disable volume shadow copy" under the advanced backup tab. While this functionality does provide Volume Shadow Copy Services for all components in the operating system, it is ”an all or nothing” functionality – no granularity. If you select to backup a volume that has Shadow Copy components on it, everything automatically gets backed up. Unfortunately, there is not support for Exchange or SharePoint Portal Server at this time. Users need a third party solution to address those needs. VERITAS Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers provides the same functionality as Backup Utility, but also provides a deeper level of functionality and granularity. With its Advanced Option File Option, Advanced Agent for Exchange, and its Agent for SQL, the VERITAS Backup Exec software provides greater granularity (such as its single instance storage for attachments or global exclude functionality for Exchange) that goes further in providing the flexibility to manage backups, keep systems online during backups, and reduces backup windows that the Backup Utility cannot provide. c) Automated System Recovery (ASR) The "Automated System Recovery Wizard" replaces "Emergency Repair Disk" that was in the Windows 2000 backup utility. The ASR Wizard runs much like the Backup Exec software’s Intelligent Disaster Recovery process does. Users walk through a wizard that backs up the system and then copies the two ASR files to a floppy disk. On recovery, users press <F2> at boot time and supply it the floppy disk with the ASR files. The windows operating system then loads the needed components and runs the ASR Wizard. Users can restore the last full backup from disk or tape. Additionally, users can also browse to a network location if it resides elsewhere. The Backup Exec software provides more robust functionality, especially where disaster recovery is concerned. In addition to recovery from a floppy, the Backup Exec software supports recovery from a bootable tape and CD. Some other features included are: • • • • Automated SQL Server Recovery Ability to backup to certain date using full, incremental, or differential backups Redesigned User Interface Support for Volume Manager Configurations 4. Overall, what is the benefit of the Backup Exec software over the Backup Utility? The Backup Exec software provides greater flexibility and granularity to manage backups, and allows for you to backup data while your applications are online. This provides business without interruption – increasing Windows application availability while simultaneously improving backups. For instance, the Backup Utility does not provide the ability to exclude specific files. In today’s business where more non- Copyright © 2003 VERITAS Software Corporation. All rights reserved. With today’s economic climate and constraints on resources (both financial and headcount), the ease of use of VERITAS Backup Exec™ 9.0 helps streamline the day-to-day activities – powerful enough for seasoned IT specialists, but simple enough for non-technical resources. VERITAS Backup Exec for Windows Servers software gives IT departments a lot more power and control, while at the same time, its flexibility and easy of use let’s you do more with less.
