Since coming together in January 2005 to raise funds for victims of the 2004 Tsunami, Hidden Gems has successfully performed several fund-raisers for a variety of other causes such as Katrina, Asha for Education, South Brunswick Public Library and CRY. In addition, Hidden Gems has performed numerous private events. Our uniqueness lies in the fact that most of our proceeds are donated to charity. www.hidden-gems.org Inside the Insider Meet the Founders Get a glimpse of our events View a list of current Bollywood hits Enjoy a bit of Movie Masala Contemplate on some words of wisdom from our Gems Make the connection between Hidden Gems and Asha Get a Book Recommendation Have some fun at our Kids Corner Namaskar! Hidden Gems takes great pleasure in publishing the first edition of our newsletter, ‘HG insider’ on the 7th anniversary of our group. Rajesh Kulkarni & Mahendra Solanki established the group in February 2005. Their passion for singing and the urge to raise funds for the 2004 Tsunami, brought them together. We are thankful for the many friends that joined them because a group is truly dependent on the passion of its members I still remember the first meeting and the discussion. The core group meeting included Rajesh & Rajeshree, Mahendra, Sudhir & Poyni, Sayali and Sanjeev, Neil, Tejoo, Murali, Abhin, Vikas, Prashant and others. We raised almost $10,000 in 2 houseful shows in one day. All the money went towards the victims of Tsunami. Physically it wasn’t possible for us to go and help them; however we felt very proud that we could at least send some money for the victims. After this event, we kept meeting often. More people joined us and our group became larger. Now Hidden Gems is a registered nonprofit organization, thanks to a lot of help from group members. Since our official registration, we have had immense support from several people, in the form of donations, attending our shows, volunteering at our events and attending our guest sessions. We are very proud of being part of this group. We now have many friends who are very talented & creative and who are important part of our lives. We are not just a group, but a large extended family. The main reason for our newsletter is to keep you, our well-wishers, updated about our progress, offer some interesting insights into our group as well as entertain you with a few articles by our Gems. We greatly appreciate your feedback and suggestions which will help us improve as we go along this journey together. Rajesh Kulkarni When did you start singing? I have been singing secretly since childhood, but really got into the groove around 2004, I was introduced to track singing by my friend Anand in Augusta, GA. That evening, I copied the first set of tracks from his collection and returned home and bought an all-inone singing machine. He also introduced me to Mahendra, who happened to live in my town. We got together and started singing for fun every chance we got. What interests you besides singing? It is difficult to give a name to my topics of interest. I would say I am curious about the nature of this universe, its origins, workings, purpose. I played competitively in Table Tennis, Badminton, Carrom and Bridge. Who are your favorite singers? When growing up versus now? I have always liked Kishore Kumar while growing up. I am blessed with a job I love, a passion for music, great friends, physical and emotional closeness with my loving parents and, last but not the least, a wonderful and considerate family. The only real time I spend with them is over the weekends and on many of these I don't think I give them as much time and attention as they deserve. The other day, it was my middle daughter Siya's birthday and she asked if I could come home early. When I asked her what time, she said "7.30?” There are days when I walk into the house at 8:00 to a huge cheer, "Daddy you are home early!” Sometimes I ask myself- is this good or bad? Work and family balance is very important, but is, to a large extent, defined by the understanding you share with your family. I think over time my wife and children have seen how passionately I love my work. They have also seen the many fringe benefits that come along with it. The fact that I have a high degree of job satisfaction is definitely a huge bonus. This, I believe, has led to a better understanding among us as a family. Work typically does not take priority over the weekends but other things do: such as the children’s activities, social commitments, and our family’s involvement with the activities of the Hidden Gems. The challenge and ongoing goal is to figure out a way to manage the interests and activities of all family members. For example, the Hidden Gems is a BIG part of our lives and we’re always juggling many activities around those of HG, whether it involves attending music sessions and programs or even performing at events. One way that we have been able to pursue this has been to get our children immersed and involved with HG activities. This becomes easier if there are other parents involved in the same activities and have children around the same age as your children. Once again, I believe we are blessed to have such parents as some of our closest friends. Over the weekends, I consciously try to get my children involved in such activities as I have seen it to have a dual advantage: it helps them develop socially, become more grounded to our desi roots and passion, learn new skills, and at the same time give my wife a much needed break. I am sure she appreciates this and such breaks recharge her for the following work week. This, in turn, helps her help me, work hard and long, over the course of the week without the feeling of guilt. The process thus feeds itself, leading to happiness and satisfaction. Family, I believe is the most important part of our lives. My wife and I have had our fair share of challenges, and I’m sure there will be more. But over time, we have learnt and are continuing to learn how we can make happiness www.hidden-gems.org and satisfied living a consistent reality. They say behind every successful man there is a woman. I believe that both behind and in front of a successful man and woman is their Family. True success is defined by happiness and satisfaction with life, and our family plays the most important role. As Desmond Tutu put it, “You don’t choose your family. They are God’s gift to you.” Hold them close, work together, and success will be yours, in every sense of the word. -Ramana Subramanian ------------------------------------------------------------ Music – a form of Meditation Music has been an integral part of many cultures and social life in east and west for a long time. Indian classical music is one of the oldest musical traditions in the world. The Indus Valley Civilization has sculptures that show dance and old musical instruments, like the seven holed flute. Various types of string instruments and drums have been recovered from Mohenjo Daro and Harappa excavations. Music has changed and evolved over time, but no one type is better than the other. Any sound, rhythm and melody that suit your temperament and elevate your mood can be considered as good music. Playing, singing, practicing music or even just listening to music is like meditating. It helps you live in present moment. It can take you to such high levels that you can forget the physical existence of your body and enter a state of deep meditation. Some even experience being one with God when completely engrossed and lost in melodious tunes. Music and dance forms have been used in devotion to deities in India. Pictures of Lord Krishna playing flute and dancing Lord Shiva exhibit the closeness of music and dance with God. Music has therapeutic effects on soul and it has long been used to help people deal with their emotions. All its facets - physical, emotional, mental, social, aesthetic and spiritual are used as a therapy to improve and maintain good health. It’s a sovereign remedy against despair and melancholy. So, Guruji says, live in the world of music and spread the happiness around. संगीत मन को पंख लगाए; गीत स ं े रिमझिम िस बिसाए; सिू की साधना... पिमेश्विकी…. -Vrinda Khatu HG Insider January 2012 7 of 10 MOVIE MASALA Change in Hindi Cinema Aisee’, ‘Dev D’ to ‘Chandani Bar’, ‘Oye Lucky! With so much variety in subjects these days on table, ‘Dabbang’ was bound to stand out as a hardcore ‘masaalaa’ movie! If you follow Hindi cinema trends / patterns, you will notice that someone – a producer, director, scriptwriter, music director – experiments something different to standout from rest of the breed. As the popular word in Hindi movie makers’ language goes –“ye film zara hatke hai!” Once that experiment is successful i.e. audience likes it, then that’s it! I am delighted to be given the opportunity to pen a few lines about one of the charities we have been supporting for quite some time now. Asha for Education (www.ashanet.org) is a secular organization dedicated to change in India by focusing on basic education in the belief that education is a critical requisite for socio-economic change. In the summer of 1991, a few U.Cal. Berkeley students got together to think of ways in which they could play a role in the development of India, the country of their origin. These young people shared the belief that education is a critical requisite and an effective catalyst for social and economic change in India. Basic education became the agenda for the action group that emerged from this gathering. The group was named Asha to represent the hope that had brought these individuals together and the hope that they aimed to bring into the lives of children in India. Sandeep Pandey, one of the founder members, went on to win the Ramon Magsaysay Award (often termed as 'Asian Nobel prize') in 2002 for the emergent leadership category. Asha's focus on children's education has galvanized a number of volunteers across the globe. Today, there are over 73 Asha chapters worldwide: Close to 99% of Asha’s collections across the world goes to fund their various projects, since it is completely volunteer-driven and there are minimal administrative overheads (1.5%). Charity Navigator, America's premier independent charity evaluator, awarded Asha their highest 4-star rating for both organizational efficiency and organizational capacity. Hidden Gems has been involved with Asha for a number of years now. We have partnered with them to do Surbahaar, an annual fund-raiser in 2006 and 2009. Each of these programs raised over $6000 in net funds. In addition, Asha has been a regular recipient of our funds since both of Asha’s key tenets, i.e. children and education are near and dear to HG’s mission. We have been donating regularly each year, at least around $1500 to fund the Central NJ chapter’s projects. We hope that both our organizations continue to be associated closely in the years to come. -Partha Mallikarjun ________________________________ The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho I read this book a couple of times. The first time I hated it and quite frankly thought it was a vaguely written book. But bits of it stayed with me .When a friend raved about it , I picked it up again and read it a couple of pages www.hidden-gems.org at a time .I loved the messages that this book imparted, interwoven in the tale of the desert, The Alchemist, and Santiago. Simply put, this is a story of a shepherd boy who is after his treasure. The treasure has been buried in an Egyptian pyramid. On the way to finding his treasure, the boy meets different people and passes through different nations, and finally by the end of the story, he finds out that the treasure is the journey itself." It doesn't matter if you're searching for buried treasure, or for success, friendship, money, love, It doesn't matter if you die trying, never reaching your goal. It doesn't matter if you don't find what you're looking for, once you get there. What matters is what you've brought with you on the way, and what you've learned along the way. The people you meet, the hardships and heartaches you go through, the lessons your experiences has taught you. Alchemy is such a potent idea–the changing of one element into another. Is the boy an alchemist, for transforming himself and the lives of those around him? Is God the alchemist, for transforming the destinies of humanity? Is the reader the alchemist, for taking the fable and transforming its words into something personally meaningful? The book tells you of the wonder and the uncertainty of change and evolution, the secret of enjoying the beauty of life without becoming hardened by the harshness of reality, the art of living in the moment without worrying about the past or the future, and most importantly, the ultimate secret of the universe, that we are all interconnected. "Everyone on earth has a treasure that awaits him," his heart said. "We, people's hearts, seldom say much about those treasures, because people no longer want to go in search of them. We speak of them only to children. Later we simply let life proceed, in its own direction, toward its own fate. But, unfortunately, very few follow the path laid out for them - the path to their destinies, and to happiness. Most people see the world as a threatening place, and, because they do, the world turns out, indeed, to be a threatening place. So we, their hearts, speak more and more softly”. This tale is inspiring, imaginative, and captivating. Santiago grows throughout the story and in the end, even though he was tested severely, he preserved and obtained his treasure by following his dream. Why is this book is relevant to HG? Simply because we stand united in our cause. Simply because we believe we can make a difference, Simply because of where we started and how far we have come. Simply because we are a perfect example of this book … Coelho states, "And that's where the power of love comes in. Because when we love, we always strive to become better than we are." -Jayshree Iyer HG Insider January 2012 9 of 10 KIDS CORNER It’s Nice to Laugh! Below are four (4) questions and a bonus question.
