Following an extensive 6-month evaluation conducted by Dr. Judith Kieff, Professor Emeritus, University of New Orleans, STAIR is implementing Phase I of a multi-year program update during the 2014-15 school year. The revision ensures that STAIR has aligned its program with best practices in reading, and is following quality afterschool programming standards for program eligibility, tutoring environment, program service delivery, calendar of service, assessment/data collection/reporting methods, and professional development of staff and tutors. We’re pleased that Dr. Kieff will continue to advise STAIR in her capacity as part-time Literacy Specialist. Phase I is on track and offers 8 units of step-by-step reading instruction, a curriculum guide, and multiple reading workshops for staff, tutors and parents. STAIR staff is replenishing site libraries with quality books and resources as well as training staff and volunteer tutors in the use of the updated reading curriculum. Future phases of this initiative in the years ahead include providing resources for English language learners, a pilot summer tutoring program and a blended learning curriculum that would incorporate literacy technology. We are especially excited that all of these changes coincide with STAIR’s 30th anniversary! Lauren S. Wilson, Board President Prospective tutors at STAIR’s fall training on the Northshore became acquainted with the new tutoring materials and viewed helpful videos on reading strategies. Sara W. Woodard, Executive Director Updated STAIR curriculum materials include revised instructional units, poetry anthology, and a comprehensive curriculum guide for tutors. STAIR Facts 2013-2014 • • • • 229 students served 29 tutoring sites in Orleans, Jefferson, Plaquemines and St. Tammany parishes 33 public schools served Oral reading fluency on reading tests on average increased 112%.
