PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
1. Assist those in safety and risk management
for public sector agencies in recognizing and
handling the many situations presented in their
job.
2. Provide a foundation of knowledge and skills
to those individuals involved in safety and risk
management.
OUR SERVICES
GEDI cooperates with various professional
organizations to provide certification programs to
enhance the knowledge and skills of public sector
officials and employees. We provide on-site training
to governments in a variety of topic areas aimed at
improving personnel and financial management,
strengthening leadership and team development,
improving government services to citizens,
increasing organizational efficiency, and educating
about important legal and ethical issues. Programs
are tailored to an individual government’s needs
and time considerations.

The Government & Economic Development Institute
represents Auburn University’s commitment to
excellence in state and local government and nonprofit organizations. Since 1976, the Institute has
provided technical assistance, training, economic
development and survey and policy research to
meet the changing needs of Alabama governments
and public officials.

New Risk Management Certification Program
THE AAPPA RISK MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATION PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE GREATER PROFIECINCY AND UNDERSTANDING TO
INDIVIDUALS INVOLVED IN THE PROCESSES OF RISK MANAGEMENT. THOSE ELIGIBLE TO ACHIEVE CERTIFICATION ARE THOSE INVOLVED IN RISK
MANAGEMENT AND SAFETY FOR ALABAMA PUBLIC SECTOR AGENCIES. THE PROGRAM IS COMPOSED OF FIVE TESTED COURSES.
LEGAL FOUNDATIONS OF RISK MANAGEMENT (6 hrs)
In this course participants will develop a
knowledge foundation of the laws surrounding risk
management, discuss ways to protect the agency
from liability. Types of negilgence and processes
for filing claims will also be discussed.

WORKERS’ COMPENSATION (6 hrs)
Participants will develop a foundational knowledge
of the history of workers’ compensation, discuss
the structure of the current US system and identify
fraudulent claims.
BENEFITS ADMINISTRATION (6 hrs)
This course will provide an opportunity for participants
to discuss and compare various types of benefits,
methods of financing benefits, and various benefit
options.

RISK MANAGEMENT BASICS (6 hrs)
This course will introduce participants to important
definitions involved in risk management and
develop necessary knowledge of important terms.
Participants will demonstrate knowledge of risk
identification, analyzation, control, financing and
monitoring. Insurance will be discussed throughly.
OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH (6 hrs)
This course will provide a knowledge foundation of
OSHA and the exemptions for local governments.
Participants will investigate areas of safety and
liability concern for local governments, discuss the
importance of safety policy and implementation of
such policies and discuss ways to improve the safety
culture.
CONTINUING EDUCATION
These courses are accepted for continuing education by IPMA, and application for recertification
credit for PHR, SPHR, and GPHR and for HRCI is
being submitted.
REGISTRATION POLICY
Registration forms received and processed at GEDI constitutes registration, if space is available. A confirmation
letter will be mailed from GEDI when the participant’s enrollment process is complete. Written cancellations
received 15 working days prior to the beginning of the program will be honored with an assessed administrative
fee. Late cancellations or non-attendance will not be refunded. Substitutions for registered participants may
