Use talk activities – information gaps
In groups of 3, look at a photo from a sequence of cotton
production. Look closely and write questions that they would like to
know the answers to.
Can they find the right caption to fit the illustration?
Form a human sequence of cotton production.
Watch a video clip of cotton production.
Sequence the production of cotton in own words
Organise the children into small groups. Provide each group with an
example of packaging from a Fairtrade product. Ask the children to
examine the different examples. Set them a challenge to find:
• An image that grabs their attention
• A word or sentence that makes them want to have this product
• Any facts they can learn about the product

What will they be looking for to make them buy this product instead
of something like it?”
Discuss any particular images, words or facts that really make an
impression and WHY they make an impact. Record these on the

Show the photographs of cotton production to the children. Ask
them if they recognise what is being grown? ( link to literacy) Has
anyone been to a place where cotton is grown? Show some cotton
growing locations on a world map. Pupils locate the countries on a
blank world map using 6 figure co-ordinates. What do they notice?
Does anyone know how far away these places are?
Look at the scale on the map and work out how far the journey is
from Wales. (link to Maths)
Introduce the idea of fair trade and how it relates to cotton.
Explain that the trading of cotton is not always fair on
those who grow it. Talk about what ‘fair’ means in this context.
Work for most children: Ask the children to find out as much as
they can about cotton production using ICT.
Bring everyone together and talk about the children’s discoveries.
