Flashcards MEDIA RELEASE Public Television Special Examines the Issue of Child Sexual Abuse CITY, STATE – RELEASE DATE: It is estimated that an average of over 300,000 children are sexually abused each year in the United States with one in three girls and one in six boys victimized. Of these cases, family members or acquaintances commit 96 percent of offenses. CALL LETTERS/CHANNEL, public television announced today the debut of “FLASHCARDS,” a new public television special – distributed by American Public Television – that exposes the hidden reality. Child sexual abuse is a prevalent and pressing issue. This 30-minute program is a sensitive and unsensationalized portrait of one girl’s struggle with child sexual abuse. It reveals both the dynamics of child sexual abuse and the broader cultural patterns that help perpetuate it. The film raises some of the most complicated issues of the abuse: children often do not tell anyone what is happening, the perpetrator is most frequently someone the child knows and trusts, the abuse itself can include a confusing mix of love and violation, and both victims and perpetrators often experience a range of shame, confusion, and anger that may be directed either toward themselves or others. “FLASHCARDS” explores an 11-year-old girl’s memory of an idyllic summer spent at the family cottage in 1968 Michigan with cousins, aunts, and uncles, along with her siblings and parents. The days spent swimming, playing cards, laughing, and eating huge meals gathered around the table conceal a dark and dangerous secret. This family has its demons to be exorcised. Beneath a façade of a fun and carefree summer, this film reveals Mary Kay’s anguished emotions and behaviors in response to sexual abuse committed within her own family, and follows her withdrawal from those around her and her growing silence, confusion, and shame.
