Their co-championship marked the fifth time that such has occurred in 88 National Spelling Bees, with one co-championship just last year in 2014. With years of intense study under his belt, the former 2014 South Asian Spelling Bee Champion and 2014 National Spelling Bee 3rd place winner performed with great aplomb. The Air Jordan aficionado, who wore his LeBron James jersey under his dress shirt for luck, was a student of head coach, Michelle Horton for a few years in Hexco's Personal Coach Program (PSC). Seemingly unfettered by flashing cameras and the strain of spelling words aloud on national television, Gokul commandeered the trophy as well as legions of followers. Immediately after the bee, Gokul was interviewed onstage along with co-champ, Vanya. The announcer, sounding somewhat puzzled, turned to Gokul. Contestants had less than 30 seconds to mark their answer on a Scantron. Only the words were repeated. Dr. Bailly paused for about 10 seconds before proceeding to the next word. Then, each word was pronounced one time before proceeding to the vocabulary section. Vocabulary sentences and definitions were read aloud by Dr. Bailly. The multiple-choice format confused some, who later second-guessed themselves and changed their answers at the end of the tests. • After the written tests were administered, the correct answers were given to the students, but they did not know their scores, until after Round 3 and Round 6, respectively. Some who thought they advanced did not, and others who thought they did not advance did! So, just do your best and don't fret about your score once the written tests are over. • Repeat spellers found the words in early written spelling rounds to be more difficult than in the past. After a careful analysis, Hexco agrees! Historically, around 50% of off-list words in Round 1-4 could be found in Verbomania, but in 2015, we found 77% percent of the words to be in our toughest volumes which are New Nat's Notes and the Blitz Lists. When choosing our products, remember that difficult words are often made of other simpler ones, and that many spelling bees that lead up to the National Bee use vocabulary enriching, SAT-type words as found in Verbo products. • Many spellers said "Hello" to Dr. Bailly in different languages. • It was rumored that newspapers were asked not to give out Sponsor Bee Guides which students traditionally used for study to prepare for Round 3 of the National Spelling Bee. Round 2 words are taken from the Spell It list. • Two spellers disputed a word's spelling or word information given after they 'missed' their word on stage; while you are allowed to dispute a word after you leave the stage, historically, the judges' decision always stands. • One speller had a word of no origin. • Marcus Behling congratulated his brother on stage for graduating as high school valedictorian • Shobha Dasari received two standing ovations. • There was a city-wide black out immediately following the bee which lasted for about 3 hours. • Sneakers were often zoomed in on and one speller had unicorn shoes. • A new app called "Buzz Worthy" was released which allowed people to try to predict the winners. • Written scores of contestants were shown on ESPN. • A National Spelling Bee spokesperson stated, "the words will have to get tougher" next year. • Gokul is from St. Louis, the same hometown as George Thampy, the year 2000 spelling bee champion, and another Hexco customer. HOW POINTS ARE ACCUMULATED (table) Meet the Spelling Sisters, who were the instigators of our business. Huntley is working at Accruent in Austin after receiving her MBA from Harvard. All still participate in the workings of Hexco. "I have to admit, even I lost my cool at the end," Gokul said, then smiled. He added, "I feel like if you relax more, you do better." The announcer also asked the duo to give "one word to describe your win." Vanya said, "Surreal." Gokul replied, "Ridiculous," leaving the flock of press in stitches. Coaching - Our Spelling Bee 'Family' As serendipity decided, spelling coach Michelle Horton ran into Gokul and his parents outside of the Gaylord Hotel just a couple hours after the National Spelling Bee had ended. The Venkatachalams thanked Mrs. Horton for the help she had given Gokul over the years and graciously hugged her and shook her hand. "Where were you?" Mrs. Venkatachalam asked Mrs. Horton. "We were looking for you (onstage)." That was "Gokul's moment," Mrs. Horton assured them. She was unostentatiously happy to have played a role in Gokul's win, but always gives the credit to her students and their parents who support them. "The kids do the work. I just guide them," she said in an interview. While rainbow confetti fell from the ceiling and Gokul took hold of the trophy along with Vanya, Mrs. Horton smiled peacefully and packed up her laptop which she uses during the National Spelling Bee to look up words in the dictionary as they are spelled. Before exiting the ballroom, she again congratulated and praised her students' performance and hard work. Many loving goodbyes took place, and it was apparent that Mrs. Horton was more than a coach to the spellers and families who attended the National Bee over the years -- she was a person who had won their respect and adulation. Two other Hexco spelling coaches also attended to support their coached spellers and their families at the bee, and for the first time, Mrs. Horton offered coaching to her spellers at the hotel just before the bee began. Special thanks to the Venkatachalam family, our customers, and Personal Spelling Coach students. You are all winners in our dictionary. We are often asked, "What should I study?" And, "Is there a certain list that I should use to prepare for my spelling bee?" Starting with classroom and school bees, and any bees that lead up to the National Spelling Bee level, first and foremost -- be sure to ask your spelling bee coordinator which lists they plan to use as basis for study. Also, understand that many bees have to go off-list, or use a secret list in order to determine a winner. This can happen very early in bees where there is high competition and when it appears that most contestants have studied all the words in the provided study list(s). Below is an overview of lists that have been historically used in bees or levels of spelling bees; on a rare occasion, we have heard of schools and regional and state bees simply 'go rogue' and do their own thing, going off-list right away. Again, this is why it is important to talk with your spelling bee coordinator as early in the game as possible. • Class Bees - All words used in classroom bees of schools spelling words, and 12 vocabulary words, all were multiple- Graded List; however, if you have a future serious speller, choice and words for the spelling section were pronounced learning only a few hundred words is not much of a challenge. by Dr. Bailly. Regional Bees, County & State Bees - Most start with Spell It words, and move on to off-list words that are not found on any official study list. However, in 2015, 69% of the 600 words that were given to spellers to study after they won their bee that leads to the national level ("Sponsor Bee Guide") could be found in New Nat's Notes and Verbomania. For very competitive spelling bees, we also recommend the Blitz List. Note, many of our advanced spelling products are available in print and with audio. See catalog for options. National Spelling Bee Rounds 2 & 3 - Each of these written Prelim rounds contained one word and the answer was providing an important word foundation. and on occasion, they go off-list using the Spell It list to declare • National Spelling Bee Round 1 - Round 1 had 12 enrolled at spellingbee.com have generally relied on Scripps have been used for many years in classroom and school bees • • • National Spelling Bee Rounds 4-20 - Rounds 4 and up used no provided study list, but the finalists used a total of 15 unique Hexco products among them. Of the 49 spellers who advanced to the semifinal rounds, 33 had purchased Hexco products. Of course we cannot account for those who are using Hexco books or software from a retired speller, but the numbers for those we can account for, speaks volumes. Onefifth of the students who went on to the semifinals had used our Personal Spelling Coach program. Nine of the ten finalists were Hexco customers and performed outstandingly. Chart summary (above) - There were 57 out of 285 contestants who had previously competed in the National Spelling Bee. When Semifinalists where announced, less than half of those moving on were repeat contestants who accounted for 45% of the field; in previous years, repeat contestants advancing to Round 4 Semifinals has been as high as 66% in 2012. Four of the ten finalists were at the National Spelling Bee for first time. That said, the speculation of 'repeater advantage' is somewhat diminishing, which is good news if this is your first time going to the National Bee! NATIONAL Spelling Bee's 2015 VOCABULARY WORDS Leveling the 'playing field' In 2015, each contestant was given the same spelling and vocabulary words in the written round. However, in the previous two years, each speller was given one unique vocabulary word for each of Rounds 2, 3, 5, and 6. This means that no spellers had the same vocabulary word for these Rounds in 2013 and 2014. The four words, (worth 3 points each) that students needed to know the definitions of were: symbiosis, desuetude, collusion, and dysphemia. The first two words were on provided Scripps' lists, the latter two words could be found in New Nat's Notes. unbeknownst upeygan urushiol usurpative usury vascular vassalage velocious verbosity verdurous verisimilitude vermicide vetturino vexillology viaduct viand viceroy villagisms villeggiatura vociferous voltammetry voyageur wafture Walloon wasteweir Wensleydale winze worsted xenon xerogel xiphias xylary yayoi yeggman yeomanry yosenabe zabaglione Zamzummim zarzuela zelkova zircon zocalo zwieback VOCABULARY WORDS Written Rnd 3 desuetude Written Rnd 1 comestible gazetteer lenitive expatiate lilliputian (L) vulpine plaudit enervate abstemious otiose viridigenous hypercryalgesia Written Rnd 4 deltiologist malapert vespiary collutorium anaclastic epithalamium mansard circummure toploftical élan sonoluminescence eburneous Rounds 2 and 3 used words Round 5 from Spell It and collusion Sponsor Bee Guides Round 6 dysphemia Written Rnd 2 symbiosis Above: Arjun Jagjivan spells on stage at NSB 2015 National Spelling Bee's 2015 SPELLED WORDS SPELLED WORDS (Rnd 5 cont.) nival vilipend rescissible colcha Syrette boucle baragnosis epicede holoku noctidiurnal moulage parorexia arcology calefy Rounds 2 and nictitate 3 used words from Spell It and tiple macfarlane Sponsor Bee smorzando Guides cataphyll schnell Written Rnd 4 antenatus (-i) adscititious jaspe carcel pleonexia contretemps barbellate elepaio frangipane karakurt katakana kathakali punchinello lulliloo Phalaenopsis (-sid) piolet eupyrion radicicolous improvisatrice sosie saxaul tannined walpurgisnacht mulct Written Rnd 1 rhythmical(ly) collateral jibboom capsaicin perruche tarsorrhaphy certosina gorgoneion meuniere rondavel tablita schmierkase Round 5 diamante apivorous glaswegian psychagogy inessive vinaceous camarilla monepic kipuka procrypsis rollmops osteitic capotasto agaric consomme faineancy (-nt) Round 6 periastron vernissage morphallaxis Dicynodon periegesis gibus hanswurst realpolitik emmetropia tristeza oppidan mediobrome canotier opisometer schefflera railleur (Rnd 6 cont.) naranjilla fauces bordereau dicoccous riegel nomothetic sphenogram xenodochium rechauffe contrapposto schiller hapalonychia corroboree cimex phylephebic siderism respue cupressineous sinciput ballabile symblepharon decretum cinquecento Round 7 bouillabaisse cerastes hacek cytopoiesis crannog bacchius cocozelle samadhi Albumblatt billiken Round 8 Hippocrene backfisch poikilitic gnathostome poblacion commissurotomy reclame tartarean Round 9 oflag bayadere iridocyclitis Canossa tortillon minhag Round 10 cibarial zygoneure acritarch Round 11 bouquetiere caudillismo Round 12 thamakau scytale Round 13 tantieme cypseline Round 14 urgrund filicite Round 15 myrmotherine sprachgefuhl Round 16 zimocca nixtamal Round 17 hippocrepiform paroemiology Round 18 scacchite pipsissewa Round 19 Bruxellois pyrrhuloxia Round 20 scherenschnitte nunatak CO-CHAMPS DECLARED! Buy the Spell It! volume for district, county or other competitive bees. The 1999 and 2006 Paideia Lists are a collection of good spelling bee words used by National Spelling Bee contenders. These are classic volumes for school/club practice bees and for hosting adult spelling bee tournaments. Price Blitz List & the 2014 National Spelling Bee There were 78 words that were not in any provided list or in New Nat's Notes or Verbomania. The Blitz List contained 31 out of those 78 words. At the 2014 National Spelling Bee, 34 words were in Blitz List 1, 2, and 3. Each volume contains 3,000 highly difficult words that were never seen in bees at the time of its release. Some words in Volumes 1, 2, and 3 have since been seen in the National Bee, but there are many more that could easily appear at the National level.
