“There’s a lot of talk around about the new
Australian Curriculum and the word “grammar” comes
up pretty often as being a compulsory part of the English
teaching strand. Of course, language is incredibly complex,
and there have been many dramatic new theories of grammar
developed in linguistics departments of the universities. But
you have to start somewhere and for children, a perfectly
reasonable starting point, I think, is what is known as
“traditional” grammar, with categories like nouns, verbs,
adjectives, articles and prepositions. My challenge in
