BECOMING A COUNSELLING TRAINER AND EDUCATOR Tutor: Siobhan Canavan and colleagues Dates and time: Tuesdays, 7 sessions, 9.30am-1pm, 8 October to 19 November 2013 Course Outline This course provides an introduction to the theory and practice of education and training in counselling. Offering an examination of the educational and conceptual tools required of trainers and students of counselling and psychotherapy, each session will comprise tutor input, experiential work and practice sessions in the main training modalities– self-awareness, development of practice, small and large group facilitation, experiential learning, practice development and research. Themes include: The main principles, features and rationale for counselling training Challenges in the facilitation of self-awareness Developmental processes and reflexivity in practice development The role of skills workshops and practice related groups The main tenets of theoretical engagement and creativity in teaching theory Assessment of theoretical engagement, self-awareness and practice development Self, peer and tutor assessment Encouragement of critical engagement with research findings and practice The course will take place in interactive seminars and discussions. Brief student presentations will also be used to stimulate discussion on the issues raised. These presentations will provide attendees with opportunities to enhance their presentation and training skills. Cost: £675 Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have a diploma in counselling and be experienced practitioners (BACP accredited or eligible for BACP accreditation).
