CULINARY Arts About the Profession Food preparation is truly an art. Those who are most successful started their careers with formal education and professional training. Career Options You can work in restaurants, large institutions, resorts or private homes, in research and development, as a food and beverage manager, or aspire to the culinary entertainment field. Working Conditions Industrial kitchens require teamwork and cooperation. You will be on your feet and under tight deadlines. However, there is great camaraderie in the kitchen, the industry and professional organizations. Income Potential For chefs and head cooks, annual incomes range from $24,770 to $74,060. Bakers’ salaries range from $17,070 to $37,070. However, income potential is unlimited for those who rise to the top of the profession. Career Advancement Culinary staff usually work their way up from prep-cook, to station cook, to sous chef, to chef de cuisine and executive chef. Many become restaurant owners, and a few become celebrity chefs.
