The SMG Theater Network is comprised of theaters and
performing arts centers from Worcester, MA to Long Beach,
CA with capacities ranging from 200 to 5,000 seats. The
average venue has a capacity of approximately 2,300
seats and presents a variety of programming from touring
Broadway shows, concerts, comedy, orchestras, opera, ballet
and dance to community events such as graduations, dance
recitals and festivals.
Established in 2003, the SMG Theater Network was created
to take full advantage of SMG’s leverage and leadership
position within the entertainment industry. Initially
envisioned as a monthly conference call among the venues
to discuss event routing and booking opportunities, the calls
soon branched off into uncharted territory, providing an
ongoing forum for our venue operators to discuss theaterspecific issues with their peers and industry leaders.

THE THEATER NETWORK HAS THE FOLLOWING GOALS:
1
Provide current information regarding booking and
routing information to Network participants.
2
Utilize our vast internal resources and experience
to provide support and assistance to SMG venues/
personnel as needed.
3
Serve as a resource and database for all SMGmanaged theaters.
4
As much as possible, standardize the type of information
available to potential users.
5
Establish minimum standards of service for our venues,
creating an expectation of service with our users.
6
Strive to improve relationships with existing presenters
while seeking to develop new presenters with the ability
and resources to present in multiple markets.
7
Enhance the overall patron experience in our facilities.
MONTHLY CALL CONTENT:
A typical call consists of an introduction, roll call, a guest
caller from the entertainment industry (usually an agent
or promoter) a discussion of current items of interest, and
review of the Event Routing Bulletin (ERB). The ERB, updated
monthly, is a comprehensive listing of virtually every artist
and attraction currently seeking to play theater-sized
venues. This information is always available online 24/7 at
SMGBooking.com, our online booking database.
In addition to reviewing current artist availabilities, the
monthly conference calls also serve as a forum to help
develop stronger relationships and negotiate better deals
with our agency and promotional partners. Industry leader
contacts include:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
William Morris Endeavor
CAA
ICM
The Agency Group
Paradigm
The Gersh Agency
APA

The Road Company
VEE Corporation
And promoters from:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
LiveNation
AEG
C3
New Space Entertainment
Outback Concerts
Jam Productions
NS2
Calls routinely include topics such as creating diversity
in programming, audience development, establishment
of Best Practices, discussion of successful marketing and
promotional ideas, utilization of new technologies along with
discussion of industry trends and development of new polices
and procedures.
BENEFITS TO MEMBERS ON THE NETWORK INCLUDE THE
FOLLOWING:
• Establishment of an online database of agents,
promoters and managers that SMG theater managers
can access to distribute venue availability sheets, press
releases and other important information.
• Use of SMGBooking.com, SMG’s private online
Event Booking System. SMGBooking.com allows our
operators in the field, as well as our regional and
corporate managers, real-time access to a venue’s
booking calendar. It affords agents and promoters
the ability to book dates in SMG-managed venues
with a keystroke. Additionally, SMGBooking.com is a
valuable online resource, containing up-to-date sales
reports for all events currently on-sale in SMG venues,
routing information for artists and attractions currently
touring and other important event and venue related
information.
• Templates for the creation of Event Guides, Booking
Policies, Venue Sponsorship Proposals, Artist Offers and
Event Estimates along with examples of existing venue
marketing plans, patron fulfillment programs (restaurant
partnerships and in-house concierges) and detailed
guidelines for the creation of grand opening and annual
venue open-house events.
• Real-time access to the other members of the SMG
Theater Network. In some ways this is the most valuable
benefit of being part of the Network, because your
theater benefits from the collective experience, industry
contacts and management savvy of the other SMG
industry professionals, both in the field and at SMG
Corporate Headquarters.
• Creation of exclusive SMG Theater Network deal with
artists, agencies and promoters, granting preferred
booking status, “most-favored nation” financial terms
and other incentives for our venues.

One area that I believe we have been very successful at is the contracting with SMG to oversee the operations of our entertainment facilities
which include The Victory Theatre and Mesker Amphitheatre. Not only has SMG operated these facilities in an outstanding fashion, they
have also enhanced their activities by attracting numerous events such as concerts, conventions and other gatherings which otherwise
would not have chosen Evansville as their venue.

WAGNER NOËL PERFORMING
ARTS CENTER
MIDLANDS, TX
• 1,824 Capacity for Main Hall
• 200 Capacity for REA-Greathouse Recital Hall
• 200 Capacity for Mason Rehearsal Hall
Opened in November 2011, the Wagner Noël Performing
Arts Center is a spectacular new $81 million venue. Owned
by the University of Texas of the Permian Basin (UTPB), the
Main Theater opened with a sold-out gala performance by

fast becoming the premier facility for the arts in West Texas
and is scheduled to host more than 150 events each year.

SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENTS
• The Wagner Noël Performing Arts Center is home to the
Midland-Odessa Symphony Orchestra & Chorale.
• SMG took over management of the Wagner Noël
Performing Arts Center in October 2011. In that short
time frame, the event schedule booked by SMG has
tripled the number of bookings for the venue. The
versatility of the venues will allow such programming as
Dinner & a Show, which will highlight local musicians in
the Midland and Odessa communities.
• This facility is home to the only Broadway Series in West
Texas and is scheduled to host major Broadway touring
shows including Stomp, Lord of the Dance, Hal Holbrook
as Mark Twain and The Rat Pack is Back.

MARKETING
INITIATIVES AND
PROGRAMS
AN OVERVIEW FOR THEATERS
AND THE ARTS
Listed in this section are programs that can be and are utilized,
in part or all, by the many theaters in SMG’s Network.
CURTAIN CALL
THEATRE GOURMET RESTAURANT PARTNERSHIP
PROGRAM
Local restaurants take advantage of major promotions at a
moderate investment! As a Gourmet partner, restaurants
participate in in-Theatre promotions that include rack
cards, tickets stuffers, marquee listing, website listing, cooperative advertising in major daily newspapers, Concierge
Desk inclusion, summer newsletter listings, and e-flyer
distributions. These efforts capitalize on patron habits for
pre- & post-show behavior.
THEATRE-GOER GETAWAY HOTEL PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM
In efforts to bolster the local hospitality industry, SMG’s
hotel partnership program allows for local properties to take
advantage of major in-Theatre promotions at a moderate
investment! As a Getaway partner, hotels participate in inTheatre promotions that include rack cards, tickets stuffers,
marquee listing, website listing, co-operative advertising in
major daily newspaper, Concierge Desk inclusion, summer
newsletter listings, and e-flyer distributions. Promoters are
also regularly sent information on current hotel partners so
they may take advantage of reduced rates.
IN-THEATRE CONCIERGE
The In-Theatre Concierge is available at all events to provide
patrons with destination information, take restaurant
reservations, and invite patrons to join the Theatre mailing
list. Friendly and knowledgeable, the In-Theatre Concierge
provides a valuable point of contact for audience members at
every Theatre event, facilitating goodwill in the community
and encouraging cross marketing among local attractions,
restaurants, and hotels.
Curtain Call is a Theatre’s official season sneak preview
and open house event. The Theatre opens its doors and
invites local arts organizations (producers, performers,
artists, and agencies from all performing arts disciplines
including dance, music, and visual arts) to mount tabletop
displays and promote their upcoming performance season,
at no charge. As invited guests for the evening, the Theatre
partners with all of the local chambers of commerce, inviting
all members of all chambers to enjoy a free evening of arts
and networking. The Theatre provides food, beverages, and
valet for attendees. The evening is topped off with exciting
performances, an onstage dessert reception, and an insightful
backstage tour. This can be an annual event that is highly
anticipated by guests and participants alike as it allows
an excellent opportunity for arts organizations to create
partnerships and promote their artistic fare, while educating
consumers and a desirable demographic of the areas
upcoming performances.
TECHNICAL TOUR DAYS/HOTEL CONCIERGE PROGRAM:
Local hotel concierges are invited to breakfast at the Theatre
and provided upcoming event information and an in-depth
Theatre tour in efforts to create synergy between hotel
concierges and the Theatre. During the event Concierges
are presented with the “Theatre Notebook,” a colorful,
bound resource that provides general information for the
Theatre including seating charts, historical information,
and ticket order forms. This allows concierges to remain
informed of trends and opportunities provided by the Theatre
while encouraging ticket sales among tourists and visitor
demographics.

PROGRAMMING
AND EVENT DRIVEN
INITIATIVES
DATABASE DEVELOPMENT/MANAGEMENT
As audiences become more fragmented and their media
options expand exponentially it is becoming harder and
harder for promoters to reach effectively their intended
audiences. One successful, cost-effective and highly
successful method for reaching our patron base is through
the use of email alerts and ticket pre-sale offers. Recognizing
the importance of electronic database marketing to potential
promoters and presenters, we develop an e-mail list for use in
promoting upcoming shows and special events. This would
include on-sale alerts, pre-sale offers and ticket discounts.
We will also form strategic alliances with neighboring
facilities and event producers to share database resources.
SOCIAL NETWORKING
Recognizing the impact that social networking media such
as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Reddit, YouTube, etc. have
on our audience, we will make sure that the Theatre is
well-represented on these sites. Our marketing managers
will create and maintain the various sites and homepages,
add event information and content such as video footage
and ticketing information, actively recruit new members and
utilize the sites as another important method by which to
advertise the Theatre and its events.
12
E-FLYERS
We endeavor to create a relationship with an online
marketing company. In this manner, we are able to produce
in-house internet flyers promoting Theatre events which we
then distribute to our patron database on an ongoing basis.
The technology is user-friendly and attractive, allowing the
Theatre to send out general upcoming event information for
the facility and to send out individual show flyers to promote
performances at the Theatre. The services are provided at no
cost to the presenter, and the Theatre is able to distribute an
unlimited amount of flyers for a nominal price.
WEBSITE
SMG can create a state-of-the-art website for the Theatre
that will be an interactive sales and marketing platform for
our patrons. The website includes event information, seating
charts, ticketing links and interactive maps. In addition, there
will be a comprehensive online electronic ‘Event Guide’ for
presenters that will outline technical information, building
policies and specific venue contact information.
SEASONAL COLLATERAL
WALK OF STARS
Season Brochure: A four-color, bound booklet, the season
brochure is produced annually listing event information for
the performance season. These brochures can be mailed to
arts purchasers, patrons and supporters. We recommend
that 10-15% of the number produced are placed in area
hotels, travel agencies, the local CVB, visitors’ centers,
bookstores, major chambers of commerce, restaurants, and
others with the remaining brochures distributed throughout
the year during events at the Theatre. Costs for the brochure
are supported by advertising sales. The brochure is an
excellent opportunity to keep the community informed of all
Theatre events.
This is a unique public relations opportunity to make your
Theatre stand above the rest! Celebrities are invited by the
municipality to cement their handprints in special plaques
that are later installed around the facility as part of the
landscaping. Celebrities are presented a key to the City or
proclamation as part of the press conference coordinated
around the presentation. The Walk of Stars opportunity
usually garners immeasurable media coverage for the
Theatre, the artist, and the affiliated event. Locals are then
able to interact with the plaques that are installed throughout
the facility, bringing them one step closer to their favorite
star! These events generate goodwill throughout the
community for the presenters, the facility and the artists.
Summer Event Newsletter: Based on the event calendar, the
Summer Event Newsletter is a three panel, four color mailer
providing the Theatre with the opportunity to keep patrons
informed of late bookings and additional summertime
programming. They are produced and direct mailed to
patrons and subscribers and a portion is distributed to local
visitors’ centers, hotels, the CVB, chambers of commerce,
restaurants, and others, allowing the Theatre to remain visible
during the summer season.
PRESENTER ADVERTISING
SENIOR AND STUDENT SALES
Requiring some funding, the Theatre is able to offer
discounted tickets to area seniors and students. These
monthly sales allow the Theatre to explore and develop
new audiences. Students are offered an opportunity to see
wonderful theatrical fare at an affordable price. Seniors, a
major component of performing arts audiences, experience
goodwill as they take advantage of discounts of up to 70% off
the face value of the ticket.
Our Theatres are committed to the success of all events
we host. On an ongoing basis, a Theatre provides support
marketing to presenters in the form of strip ads in the local
major daily newspaper. The Theatre also participates in
special arts sections that highlight the performance season.
Additionally, the Theatre can negotiate advertising and
promotions on behalf of presenters on a prepaid basis,
allowing promoters to take advantage of all available pricing
and the marketing expertise of the local Theatre marketing
department.
SHOWBUSINESS
Showbusiness is a marketing program focusing on food and
beverage functions, which identifies signage, advertising,
and public relations opportunities in efforts to increase
event ancillary income through catered affairs affiliated with
Theatre performances. Examples include pre-performance
wine and cheese buffets for series subscribers, catered
buffets to accompany artist meet and greets, or a pre-show
“happy hour” offering discounted drinks to patrons who arrive
early to select performances.
