A MESSAGE FROM...
Our President and Chairman
underpinnings of the achievement gap, Family
Centers is engaged in the Co-Educator Project,
which just launched as part of the Vita Health
and Wellness District initiative in Stamford.
This program aims to dramatically increase the
effectiveness of immigrant parents to function
as co-educators for their children. With active
participation from Charter Oak Communities,
Childcare Learning Centers, Neighbors Link,
Stamford Hospital, Stamford Public Schools and
the Harvard Business School-Community Partners
(HBS-CP), this initiative will demonstrate the
power of collective impact.
W
hether it’s a child receiving an academic
foundation or an adult in pursuit of
economic independence and stability,
the Road to Success begins at Family Centers
for so many in our community. With programs
and services for every stage of life, our team of
200 professionals and 3,000 volunteers actively
assisted 25,500 individuals this year as they
pursued their life goals and dreams. Many who
sought our help presented multiple issues
requiring interventions from more than one
program.
Recognizing that no one agency can provide
everything an individual or family may need,
Family Centers continues to develop its extensive
network of cross-sector collaborations with
other organizations. In an effort to attack the

Working with partners helps to broaden our
reach and leads to better outcomes for all. Family
Centers’ recent award of a federal grant from the
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
to open a Federally Qualified Health Center at
Wilbur Peck Court will greatly expand healthcare
access for public housing residents in Greenwich.
This clinic will provide primary, dental – and later
mental health care – to so many residents who
lack access to these services. This clinic award
was only possible through our strong partnership
with the Greenwich Housing Authority and the
support of the Greenwich Department of Social
Services, Greenwich Hospital, United Way of
Greenwich, the Board of Selectmen and others
invested in expanding healthcare to residents
who are underserved.
Pursuing new avenues of intervention in the
service of our community is what we do at Family
Centers. Our amazing professionals are on the
front line everyday delivering a wide range of
programs that enhance the lives of our clients
and their family members.
Measuring our effectiveness on multiple levels
is an ongoing challenge. Each of Family Centers’
OUR MISSION:
Empowering Children, Adults, Families and Communities
to Realize Their Potential.
programs produces an annual “Results Card.”
Beginning this year, we will include Return on
Investment (ROI) data in some of our Results
Cards. We are grateful to Bob Neiman and the
HBS-CP for their ongoing consultation around
the development of the metrics and training
necessary for us to demonstrate the ROI for every
dollar contributed to Family Centers.
Achieving the best level of practice across the
entire organization is an ongoing goal at Family
Centers, and much was accomplished in 2015.
For the eighth consecutive year, Family Centers
has earned Charity Navigator’s Four Star rating
for fiscal responsibility. Earlier this year all of
our preschools, School Readiness and Head Start
programs were reaccredited by the National
Association for the Education of Young Children.
We congratulate our Early Care and Education
team for this substantial accomplishment. On a
final note, for the third time in five years Family
Centers received a ”Top Workplace” designation
from Hearst Connecticut Media. This is a
reflection on our employees and the deep level
of commitment they bring to their work at
Family Centers.
As this busy and highly productive year comes
to a close, we begin our 125th year as a source
of hope, help and creative solutions. This
anniversary is a testament to the adaptability of
an organization that anticipates and responds
to the needs of an ever changing community.

EXTRAORDINARY RESULTS
The Titans Speaker Series continued
in June with a breakfast featuring FOX
News CEO Roger Ailes. In this rare
public speaking event, Ailes drew on
his experience as the head of one of the
nation’s top-rated news networks to offer
his unique perspectives on media, global
affairs and leadership. Jan Dilenschneider
and Carl Goodnow served as co-chairs.
This past year, a series of special events
provided the fuel Family Centers needed to
help local families and individuals continue
along the “Road to Success.” Collectively,
these events raised more than $920,000
to support Family Centers’ wide array of
programs and services.
In December, Family Centers’ popular
Titans Speaker Series brought former CIA
Director and self-proclaimed “spymaster”
Jack Devine to Greenwich. More than 200
guests were treated to some “inside intel”
into the missions that shaped his 30-year
career at the secretive government agency.
Thanks to Jan Dilenschneider and Linda
McMahon for chairing this event.
A bit of Hollywood flair was added to this
year’s Center for HOPE Luncheon, as
Oscar-winning actress Mariel Hemingway
took the podium to share how her family’s
struggles with mental illness had shaped
her life. In her remarks, Hemingway
spoke candidly about the suicides of her
grandfather, Ernest, and sister, Margaux,
and how those losses led her to become an
outspoken advocate for those living with
Lastly, more than 350 guests were
transported to a Polynesian Paradise
for “One Enchanted Evening” at Family
Centers’ South Pacific benefit.
Held at the waterfront home of Laurie and
Peter Grauer, Family Centers’ version
of South Pacific captured the true spirit
of the tropics. Drawing from elements of
the classic Broadway musical, co-chairs
Brooke Ashforth, Laurie Grauer, Laurie
Host and Susan Yonce created an evening
filled with island adventure and romance.

BRIGHT
BEGINNINGS
Milton Andrade was never one to ask for help.
Throughout his time at Stamford’s Academy of
Information Technology & Engineering (AITE),
Milton relied on a combination of intuition and
solid common sense to overcome the social,
academic and extracurricular challenges typical
of most teenagers. But during his senior year,
Milton came face to face with a problem he
couldn’t solve on his own.
provided Milton with a sense of normalcy. When
an injury cost him time away from the ring, the
weight of Milton’s family problems became too
much to bear. Without the outlet he desperately
needed, Milton began losing sleep, skipping class
and saw his grades plummet.
As the pressure of his family’s struggles
continued to mount, Milton felt the need to talk
about his concerns. Unfortunately, he didn’t
know where to turn. Milton had a number of close
friends he trusted, but he felt the issues at home
were too personal to share with others. He also
knew the School Based Health Center at school
had a licensed clinical social worker on staff who
could help. However, he was hesitant at first to
talk to a therapist out of fear his friends would
perceive him as “weak” or “soft”.
For several months, family problems created
turmoil at Milton’s house. At first, he tried to
ignore the mounting stress at home and go about
his business. As an avid amateur boxer, the sport

But after opening up a bit to the school nurse
about the struggles at home, Milton was urged
to meet with the Health Center social worker.
He was reluctant at first, but soon realized the
Health Center offered the safe, non-judgmental
forum he needed to express his feelings. For the
first time Milton was able to speak freely about
his frustrations and the impact his family’s
struggles had on him emotionally. He also
realized that the source of his anxiety stemmed
from the fact that he felt it was his responsibility
to fix the situation.
My family’s problems put me into a
very dark place, If it wasn’t for the
Health Center, I probably wouldn’t
have made it through high school.
JANET GUTHRIE
Greenwich Head Start Preschool Parent
“Hannah looks forward
to going to school every
day. The growth in her
development over the past
year has been amazing.
Seeing her skip down the
path to get to her classroom,
and wanting to stay even at
pick up time lets me know
that I’ve made a good
decision with this program.
I’ve also been able to go back
to work knowing my daughter
is in a fun, safe environment.”

With the help of the social worker, Milton learned
critical coping techniques to deal with the most
stressful of situations. He also learned that he
did not have to shoulder his family’s problems
alone, and that taking a break to focus on his own
goals was not a selfish act. Even though life at
home is still somewhat unsettled, Milton says the
School Based Health Center has helped improve
his confidence and focus. This fall, he will enter
college on a partial scholarship and has plans to
enter his first semi-professional boxing match.
“My family’s problems put me
into a very dark place,” Milton
said. “If it wasn’t for the Health
Center, I probably wouldn’t
have made it through high
school. Rather than keeping my
feelings bottled up inside, I was
able to talk about them. And
once they were out there, figuring out
ways to overcome the obstacles at home became
much clearer.
JAANA NARSIPUR
Early Care and Education Parent
“Our experience at the Arch
Street Preschool has been
everything we hoped it would
be. The philosophy of mixing a
set learning curriculum and time
for play really works for Rishaan.
Not only is he developing the
educational tools he’ll need
in kindergarten, but his social
skills are greatly improved. As a
parent, I also appreciate how the
staff seeks out family feedback
and keeps us all informed about
what goes on in the classroom.”
KAREN WENZ
Director of First Presbyterian Church’s Nursery School
and Care to Care Client
“Care to Care has been an amazing
resource to the First Presbyterian
Church Nursery School. In addition
to helping certify our staff on CPR,
First Aid and Epi Pen administration,
the program’s nurse consultant was
instrumental in keeping us appraised of
changes to the state’s health regulations.
Care to Care took the stress out of
meeting health mandates so that our
teachers can focus on the education of
our school’s children.”

FOSTERING
INDEPENDENCE
To Eric Pobee, achieving the
American Dream is something he
takes very seriously. A native of
Ghana, Eric and his three young
children moved to the United States
in search of a better life. While it
wasn’t easy balancing fatherhood
and the stress of providing for his
family, Eric made it work. For years,
he endured an hour-long commute
down I-95 because certified nursing
jobs in Fairfield County paid more
than others elsewhere in the state.
DENITA HORTON
Housing Resource Program Client
“I’ve always been a hard worker
and prided myself on being the
best I could be. Never in a million
years did I imagine I’d end up
homeless and living in a shelter.
The experience was a real low point
in my life, and I’ve struggled with
depression since. But I now have a
comfortable place to call my own
and things are starting to look up.
For the first time in a long time,
I have some peace of mind.”
10 FAMILY CENTERS 2015 ANNUAL REPORT
When Eric learned that he was
eligible for Section 8 housing in
Stamford, he finally felt as if life was
falling into place. Living closer to
work meant Eric could spend more
time with his kids and he didn’t
have to rely on others for childcare.
Unfortunately, Eric’s good fortune
didn’t last too long. Shortly after
moving into his new apartment, an
accident left him visually impaired
and unable to work. As his recovery
dragged on for almost two years,
the bills began to mount and Eric
sank into a depression.
TYRONE BULLOCK
Reaching Independence Through
Employment (RITE) Client
“I lost my job as a carpenter when the
economy went south in 2008. After
struggling to find work for several
months, I knew I had to make a
change. The trouble was that I didn’t
know how. The RITE program gave
me the resources and guidance I
needed to go back to school and
pursue a career in social work.”

Unsure how to get his life back
on track, Eric reached out to the
Family Self Sufficiency Program
for help. Since his injury prevented
him from continuing a career
in healthcare, the program’s
coordinator encouraged Eric to
explore other avenues. He always
had an interest in becoming a
counselor, but lacked the necessary
education. With the support
and guidance of the Family Self
Sufficiency Program coordinator,
Eric enrolled in Southern
Connecticut State University.
Once he earned his bachelor’s
degree, Eric worked with the
program to prepare for his
CHRISTIE METELLUS
Community and Supportive Services Client
“I can’t believe I waited so long to seek
out Family Centers’ help. They’ve
done so much for me personally,
and I’m very grateful. My Resident
Services Coordinator has become
my cheerleader and opened my eyes
to options I’ve never considered. But
more importantly, Family Centers
has created an atmosphere in which
residents of my housing complex are
working together to make this a better
place to live.”
“The feeling I get from

re-entry into the workforce. He
learned how to conduct a thorough
job search, underwent numerous
mock interviews and rebuilt his
resume from the bottom up. Eric’s
determination paid off, as he
landed a full-time job as a mental
health worker at a local nonprofit
organization. Obtaining employment
after two long years was such a
victory for Eric that he immediately
enrolled in graduate school to keep
his professional momentum moving
forward.
With his employment situation
stabilized, the Family Self Sufficiency
Program began helping Eric plan to
purchase his own home. In addition
to taking steps to restore his credit,
the program enabled Eric to open an
escrow account in which he can save
any income increases for a down
payment. Although he still considers
himself a “work in progress,” Eric is
pleased at how far he’s come and
looks forward to the future.
“The feeling I get from achieving my
goals is something I can’t describe,”
he said. “There were times when I
didn’t think I would make it, but the
Family Self Sufficiency Program was
there to help me to move forward.
I wouldn’t be where I am today
without them.”
LINDELIA PARRADO VARELA

“Moving from Columbia to start a
new life in the U.S. was an exciting,
but frightening, experience. I
left a successful career as an

helped me learn the language, but
also made the transition much
easier. Today, I’m a U.S. citizen and
much more confident.”

FAMILIES IN CRISIS
In a split second, Zuleika Correa’s
life changed forever. As a single
mother of three children under the
age of 8, Zuleika had a loving nature
and always put her kids’ needs
before her own. Yet, she thrived
on structure and a keen sense of
organization to keep her busy life on
track. But on one particular morning
almost two years ago, something
snapped.
Stuck in the throes of post-partum
depression, Zuleika woke up late
one morning to find her normally
tidy apartment in shambles. Toys
and clothes littered the floor, food
was strewn about the kitchen and
her kids were bouncing on the
furniture. Zuleika flew into a rage
and, without thinking, physically
disciplined the children. Zulieka’s
sister was over at the time and
witnessed the altercation. Shocked
by this behavior, she called the
police and had Zuleika arrested.
The days following the incident
were what Zulieka called her “dark
point.” Aside from dealing with the
public embarrassment of being
arrested, she was ashamed that
she had gotten physical with her
kids. The situation got worse when
Zuleika learned her kids would
live with her sister until she could

that she was a suitable parent.
Eager to get her family back, she
followed the Department of Children
and Families’ instructions and

Zuleika admits that the entered
the program with a bit of a chip
on her shoulder. She was never
a very trusting person, but she
was especially on guard since the
arrest. It took a while, but Zuleika
realized that her Intensive Family
Preservation Program case worker
wasn’t there to judge her. Rather,
she was there to help.
Once a level of trust was established,
the case worker taught Zuleika
positive parenting skills and
suggested productive ways she
could channel her anger. She
also provided the counseling
Zuleika needed to overcome her
post-partum depression. More
importantly, the Intensive Family
Preservation Program offered
Zuleika a support network when she
needed it the most.
Once Zuleika completed the
program and was reunited with
her kids, she began to make plans
to start fresh. Zuleika said her
involvement in the Intensive Family

her believe in second

intends on taking advantage
of hers. This past summer,
she and the kids moved to
Florida where she plans to

OUR VOLUNTEERS
Traveling the road toward volunteerism is often a very
personal journey. For some people, community service
is part of a family tradition that has been passed down
for generations. For others, giving back is a way to show
appreciation for help they’ve received in the past. In Beth and
Laura Gerson’s case, their volunteer story began after they
found the strength to overcome a family tragedy.
For many years, Beth had what many people considered an
ideal life. She was happily married, lived in a nice home in
Stamford and enjoyed raising her two young children, Laura
and Tim. But when her husband died in 2001, Beth’s world was
turned upside down. She suddenly found herself a widow and
the sole caretaker of her children. Beth knew that she and the
kids would benefit from talking to someone about their loss,
but a traditional therapy setting wasn’t appealing. While in the
hospital caring for her husband, Beth heard about The Den for
Grieving Kids and decided to give it a try.
Beth soon realized The Den was just what they all needed.
Rather than talking to a therapist about their father, Laura and
Tim worked through their grief by doing activities and playing
games with kids their own age. Meanwhile, Beth appreciated
the open conversations she had with other adults who had
also lost a loved one. For the Gersons, The Den offered the
comforting and understanding environment they needed to
cope with their loss. After three years, the pain eventually
subsided and the Gersons felt it was time to leave The Den.
It took a while, but Beth and Laura found their way back
to The Den 14 years later. Having a forum in which
she could talk openly about her father’s death
with kids in similar situations was extremely
healing for Laura. She had always wanted to
provide other kids that same experience, but
had to wait until she was older to volunteer at The Den. So,
shortly after Laura turned 16, both she and Beth jumped at the
chance to give back to the program that gave them so much.
They soon became greeters at The Den, often providing a
warm smile or some welcoming words to families attending the
program’s evening support groups.
Knowing how raw emotions can be following the death of a
loved one, the Gersons also regularly shared how The Den
helped them. “Grief is as real as any physical wound,” Beth
said. “It’s comforting to know that other people know how you
feel. I had no problem telling Den families my own story to
show them that it does get easier.”
“There was nowhere else I wanted to volunteer,” added Laura.
“The Den was there for us when we needed it. I’m grateful it’s
still here for other families, and it’s an honor to be part of such
an amazing program.”
