Relevant course material (detailed syllabi, hand-outs related to grammar, readings and films) will be regularly posted on Sakai.

Course Description: Italian 103 is an intensive elementary course in Italian (1.25 credits). There are no pre-requisites for this course. It covers the same material presented

1

in Italian 101 and 102 over five class periods. The aim of the course is to develop skills in speaking, oral and reading comprehension, writing, and the fundamentals of grammar.

Italian 103 will be an excellent preparation for 201, 202, and our study abroad programs.

Participation : Your participation in class is vital. Participation includes, but is not limited to: volunteering answers, being a part of a discussion, listening to your classmates, doing your homework and coming to class prepared. All of these factors will be considered when participation points are determined at the end of the semester.

Attendance : Regular attendance is critical to the success of the language-learning process.

The instructor will take attendance at the beginning of each class. Since individual progress, and that of the class as a whole, will be impeded by excessive absences, a student’s presence in the classroom is imperative. Students arriving after attendance is taken will be marked tardy. Three tardy marks will count as one absence. After the third absence, the student will start losing participation points for each class missed, which will strongly affect her final grade for the course.

Exams and homework: in-class quizzes and take-home tests alternate during the semester. Quizzes are always on Mondays (or first day of the week), take-home tests, homework from lab manual and workbook are always due on Mondays (or first day of the week). The Mid-Term exam is on October 12 of classes (December 7 th th , the Final Written Exam is on the last

) and the Final Oral Exam/Presentation during final period

(TBA).

Final oral presentation: You will do an oral presentation at the end of the semester with one or two other students in which you will discuss and compare one or more chapters, and/or one or more themes as they are developed in three different film adaptations of

Pinocchio.

You will watch these films outside class time during the semester (available at

Clapp and also on e-reserve). Ideas and topics for this oral presentation will be provided by your instructor, or you may propose your own (not later than November 21 st ). Towards the end of the semester we will read the short novel Le avventure di Pinocchio , so that you will also be able to compare the two artistic forms (film and literature). Your presentation should include a visual aid (a Powerpoint, a poster, one or more scenes from a film) and should be about 10 minutes long.

Co-curricular activities: The Department offers several unique cultural events during the semester. They are indicated in this syllabus. Participation to these activities is important and required. Special homework will be assigned and extra points will be awarded.

Final grade:

• 6 Quizzes (20%); 6 Take-home Tests (20%) and Homework (10%)

• Mid-term written exam (10%)

• Attendance and Participation (20%)

• Final written exam (10%)

• Final oral presentation (10%)
