Welcome to Sixth Grade Math! Mrs. Prego ~ Room 111 ~Be Prepared Everyday for Math~ You are responsible for having your math folder/binder (including your homework), a writing utensil, and paper with you everyday! You must keep your binder supplied with paper! Being prepared for class is a responsibility. You will not be permitted to visit your locker during class if you forgot something. This should become a habit!! Get to class on time! Get homework out immediately and place it on your desk to be checked. Begin working on your daily warm-up silently. If you were absent, it is your responsibility to check the While You Were Out Folder for the work you missed! Write all homework assignments and upcoming tests/quizzes in your assignment book everyday! Calculators The purchase of a calculator is not a requirement for this class, as they will be available in the classroom. A good one to purchase, however, would be the Texas Instrument’s TI-34II. Each student will be assigned a calculator number and is responsible for that calculator all year. Extra Help You may see Mrs. Prego anytime for extra help! The best time to receive extra help is during resource, lunch, or after school. The topics that we will focus on this year are: Topic 1 - Ratios and Proportional Relationships Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems. Topic 2 - The Number System Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to divide fractions by fractions. Multiply and divide multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples. Apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers. Topic 3 - Expressions and Equations Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions. Reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities. Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables. Topic 4 - Geometry Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume. Topic 5 - Statistics and Probability Develop understanding of statistical variability. Summarize and describe distributions. Prentice Hall Mathematics, Course 1 We will use this textbook as a supplemental resource. Below is a list of chapters that are found in the textbook. Prentice Hall’s website has valuable tools like homework video tutors, extra practice, and sample tests/quizzes! To access the textbook online: 1) Go to the website: www.pearsonsuccessnet.com 2) Type in the username and password for your class period. Chapter 1: Whole Numbers and Decimals Chapter 7: Ratios, Proportions, and Percents Chapter 2: Data and Graphs Chapter 8: Tools of Geometry Chapter 3: Patterns and Variables Chapter 9: Geometry and Measurement Chapter 4: Number Theory and Fractions Chapter 10: Exploring Probability Chapter 11: Integers Chapter 5: Adding and Subtracting Fractions Chapter 6: Multiplying and Dividing Fractions Chapter 12: Equations and Inequalities Grading Grades for this class are placed into two categories: homework and assessments (everything that you do that is not homework). Remember to check your grades online about once a week. You will be graded on the following: Homework: (10% of overall grade) You should expect homework in math almost every night with every effort made not to assign homework on the weekend. Homework is expected to be done completely and show evidence of effort to complete the assignment, even those questions not completely understood. Homework is due the day after it is assigned unless otherwise specified. Each homework assignment is worth 2 points. No points for homework are awarded if it is not completed when it is checked in class, but you may be responsible to makeup the work. Assessments: (90% of overall grade) Warm-ups: Each day when you come into class, you will complete a warm-up activity. These will be collected at the end of the week and graded. Tests/Quizzes/Projects/Classwork: You are expected to take tests and quizzes on the date that they are scheduled. The day before a major test is usually reserved for a review of the material to be tested. If you are absent on the day before the test you will be expected to take the test on the scheduled day. If you are absent on the day a test is given, you should be prepared to take the test on the day that you return. Projects and assignments are expected to be turned in on the due date without exception. In cases of short term (two days or less) absence, you will be expected to have the project or assignment on the first day back. Any project submitted late will be scored a full letter grade lower for each day late as consistent with the Olympian Team’s policy. Classwork will occasionally be collected and graded. TenMarks: You will be expected to complete tracks on an online program called TenMarks. You will be given time every other day during Math Facts to work on these tracks; however, you may need to complete tracks during resource and/or for homework.
