Holding our daughter, little princess Esther, in my arms, we approached front doors decorated with jack-o-lanterns and scarecrows. One house shocked even me, as it had recorded organ music blasting from a CD player—did people really associate the noble timbres of the pipe organ with cemeteries, zombies, and monsters? In that moment was born the seed for Scary Ride! Thanks to Bob McKay, Schwartz Center executive director, for providing the post-recital candy reception; to production manager Lewis Fuller and his magical utterance, “Have a good show;” to Mark Teague, producer of tonight’s extravaganza, and Matt Williamson for sound, props, fog, projections, coffins, screams, and eerie lighting; to Carrie and Carl Christie for the makeup and photography of Count Dracula; to stage manager Heather Pynne and her entire tech crew for Dracula’s initial rising out of the pit and more; and to my graduate students Theresa Wasinski (the Good Fairy) and John McGee, who along with MSM alum Rwei Hao, all pitched in where needed. As much as Count of Transylvania enjoys presiding once again for the seventh time at the organ for Scary Ride!, part of his heart aches for that ne’erto-return young family of twenty-some years ago that moved quickly at Halloween from house to house, as a weightless little princess in her father’s arms asked again and again, “Dad, would you pull off the mask again, so I can make sure it is you?” Don’t forget the candy reception after the show, where Count Dracula will pose for photos with audience members in costume. —Notes by Timothy Albrecht (Count Dracula), Emory University Organist Timo th y Al b r e c h t Timothy Albrecht, Emory University organist and head of the Emory graduate organ studio, performs recitals in many parts of the United States and abroad, but has yet to appear in the central part of Romania known as Transylvania. 3 U p c oming Mu s ic Events Go to music.emory.edu to view the complete list of upcoming music events.
