Gordon C. Willis
Remembering
Robert N. Fishburn
The name Willis is forever intertwined with
North Cross School. The contributions
the Willis family has made to the school
has established North Cross as a leader in
independent education in the Roanoke Valley
and beyond. Generations of the Willis family
have attended the school and continue to
give back through the gifts of their time and
resources. Since the founding of the school
at the Colonial Avenue location, a member
of the Willis family has been closely involved
with its success. This family tradition all
began with the vision and commitment of
one man: Mr. Gordon C. Willis.
Mr. Willis was a leader among leaders.
His contributions to the Roanoke Valley
were vast. He received the Noel C. Taylor
Humanitarian Award in 2000 for his work on
the Roanoke Bi-Racial Committee that led to
the peaceful integration of the city. He was a
well-respected leader in the field of business
participating on several corporate boards.
He also made significant civic contributions
that extended well beyond the geographical
borders of the Roanoke Valley, including
serving his country in the Pacific theatre
of war and becoming a Navy fighter pilot
serving on the USS Roosevelt Aircraft Carrier
flying F4U Corsairs.
His legacy continues to touch hundreds
if not thousands of lives. This is never more
obvious than in the field of education. Mr.
Willis served as the chairman of the State
Council of Higher Education for Virginia and
was among the early organizers of what has
become the Virginia Community College
System. He served on several boards whose
A few years ago on a January morning, the
faculty, staff, trustees, students, and other
members of the North Cross community
gathered in the gym of the Carter Athletic
Center for Founders’ Day. The gathering of
the school in this manner is not unusual. It
happens several times during the course of a
school year. However, this day was different.
There was an air of gratitude and absolute
respect that filled the building. It was etched
on the faces of the youngest child to the most
seasoned guest. The school community had
come together to honor Mr. Robert (Bob) N.
Fishburn.
The imprint Mr. Fishburn made on the
Roanoke landscape is boundless. The city’s
residents will long benefit from his passion for
arts and education. Mr. Fishburn founded Mill
Mountain Theatre, along with current North
Cross School grandparent Betty Carr Muse.
He served on the board of directors for the
Roanoke Symphony Orchestra and served as
president of the Roanoke Fine Arts Center. His
gifts to the Roanoke Valley will be remembered
and celebrated for generations to come. He
provided insight into his intellect with the words
he penned on paper during his many years as
a writer and editor at the Roanoke Times and
World News, and insight into his character
through his philanthropic commitment to
expanding the arts in the Roanoke Valley.
As the school came together on Founders’
Day 2010 to celebrate Mr. Fishburn’s 41 years of
service, we come together now — albeit within
the pages of this publication — to celebrate him
once more. Mr. Fishburn served on the Board
of Trustees of North Cross School for 41 years.

them be the noblest and worthiest men alone. ~ Henry David Thoreau

goals were to nurture and advance education
in the community and beyond. It is his
passion for education that has helped create
the institution that has become North Cross
School.
Mr. Willis was chairman of the North
Cross School Board of Trustees for 14 years.
He held a position on the board for more
than 49 years either as that of board member,
chairman, or trustee emeritus. During
his time on the board, the campus grew
from one building housing students grades
kindergarten through seven to a 77-acre
complex, which includes six buildings and

several athletic fields. His relationship with
the school extended beyond board member
to include that of parent and grandparent.
Four of Willis’s children attended North
Cross School: Julia Willis Crump ’64, Cynthia
Willis Creamer ’66, Gordon C. Willis Jr. ’68,
and Mary Vaden H. Eisenstadt ’78.
In 1985, the upper school building was
completed and named in honor of Mr.
Willis. Today when a member of the school
community enters the upper school they see
the words “Willis Hall” in black letters firmly
attached to the side of the building. Once
inside the building, there is the traditional
excitement that one can only find in schools.
Students discussing topics and subjects
related to an upcoming class, sharing a laugh
with a friend, or making memories that will
shape their futures for years to come. In the
midst of the daily routine that comprises
a typical school day in Willis Hall, hangs a
portrait of Mr. Willis, the man who made
it all possible. North Cross is honored to
have one of its noblest founding father’s
name forever linked with its cause. Without
the vision and leadership of Mr. Gordon C.
Willis, North Cross School would not be the
leader in independent education it is today.
Bob with his wife Sibyl.
Bob with daughters Laurie, Blair, and Sibyl.
He served on several committees and held the
position of Vice Chairman for 22 years. He has
been connected to this school during the tenure
of almost every headmaster to date. His support
of this institution is realized on so many levels,
from the buildings where the students are
taught to the offices where future plans are laid.
His commitment to integrity and passion for
this school serves as an inspiration for the entire
North Cross community.
His daughters — Laurie Fishburn Farr ’81,
Sibyl Fishburn Kuelling ’83, Katherine Blair
Fishburn Burford ’87 — spoke during his
eulogy in March of this year. They made this
statement: “It is said that each generation
stands on the shoulders of its fathers. While
your shoulders lifted each of us, it is your
heart that inspires us, holds us, and makes
us stronger.” As a school, we have been
privileged to stand on the shoulders of Mr.
Robert (Bob) N. Fishburn.
We honor his memory by celebrating his
passions. As an institution, we will continue to
promote his love of writing, arts, and education
to our students and community at large. We
will continue with this most important work of
educating tomorrow’s leaders and visionaries
while making our community a better place for all.

“Dave was willing to embrace every area of independent school life: teaching,
administration, coaching, advising, and counseling.” ~ Edward Dickenson
By Richard Cook
In the fall of 1972, I started teaching at North
Cross School. I taught in the middle school with
a very talented group of teachers. The director of
the middle school at that time was Max Travis.
In the spring of my first year of teaching, John
Tucker, the headmaster at North Cross, asked if
I would be willing to work with a Virginia Tech
student teacher. Even though I felt that it was
a strange request, given that I had a total of six
months experience as a middle school teacher, I
accepted. The young student teacher turned out
to be David Calvert, and this assignment began a
relationship between Dave, me, and North Cross
School that would last until Dave’s retirement at
the end of school in June 2012.
During his years at North Cross, David has
worn many hats; and whatever the school has
asked him to do, he
has done it well. Ed
Dickenson, the current
director of the middle
school, sums his career
up best: “Dave Calvert
always distinguished
himself by the level of
support he offered to both students and faculty
members alike. He demonstrated a high level
of professionalism in the classroom while still
remaining student-focused and down to earth. He
was always the first one to congratulate a student
on a shot-winning goal or a hard-fought game,
and he retained an almost encyclopedic memory
of past North Cross students, parents, and
teachers. During his long career, Dave was willing
to embrace every area of independent school life:
teaching, administration, coaching, advising, and
counseling. Perhaps his strongest attribute was
his dedication to helping young people grow and
mature into adults of fine character; he always
possessed a huge heart and a clear sense of
purpose when working with students.” David did
everything the school asked him to do; and he did
everything well, always keeping in mind what is
most important at any school, the best interest of
the students.
A strong point for David was coaching
basketball (and also helping Donna Satterwhite
with the softball team). David was demanding as
a coach, and he had great teams. He won titles as
both a boys’ and girls’ basketball coach. His former
players remember Coach Calvert fondly. Current
Varsity Volleyball coach, Heather Donaho says
the following of her time as a basketball player
under Coach Calvert’s direction. “He was a coach
Dave, grandson Brandon, daughter Blair, and wife Robin.
who set high expectations for us,” says Donaho.
“He was intense on the sideline, wise in the locker
room, hilarious on the bus rides, and the first
one to give the best hug after a tough game. Mr.
Calvert was inspiring and motivating and can
never be replaced — his presence will be missed in
every aspect of the North Cross community.” Ryan
Cook, who played for Mr. Calvert on a conference
championship basketball team, remembers “his
honesty and his straight forward approach.” Ryan
said that “with Mr. Calvert you always knew where
you stood — you knew when you did something
wrong or did something right. Mr. Calvert was
always very direct in instructions, and there was
no sugar coating — it was what it was.”
Student after student would comment
to me when they were in my upper school
history classes how much they liked Mr.
Calvert. He was so good in so many ways. His
sense of humor and sharp wit are legendary.
Dan Rather wrote about his rise to fame as a
famous newsman: “The dream begins with
a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and
pushes and leads you to the next plateau,
sometimes poking you with a sharp stick
called truth.” Dave poked with the “truth” for
forty years and helped to create thousands of
“dreams.” Well done, friend!

Message from the Alumni
Association President
’67
Dear Fellow Alumni,
Wow, what a school year North Cross School experienced in 2011–12. As President of the
Alumni Association, I was pleased to participate in the installation ceremony for the school’s
ninth Headmaster, Christian J. Proctor, Ph.D. We, “the alumni,” presented him Mrs. Ellis’ bells as
a symbolic gift of the transition from NCS’s storied past to its bright future.
During his first year Dr. Proctor (“Chris”) has been anything but
idle. He embraced both the challenges and opportunities North Cross
presented and the positive effects are already visible —the middle school
is in the second year of its three-year planned upgrade and overhaul—and
perceptible—the Carter Athletic Center is no longer an oven; it has finally
been air conditioned. Less noticeable, but more importantly, he is revising
the academic curriculum to emphasize greater immersion in mathematics
Churchill Robison
and world languages as he wants North Cross to excel in creativity,
critical thinking, cross-cultural competency (awareness of the world and cultures around us),
character, communication and community.
Chris wants to engage the North Cross community, including alumni, to help affect these
changes. He and his wife, Ellie, are active leaders. They hosted—at the new Headmaster’s home,
across the street from the school—the annual Homecoming Reunion for all the school’s alumni
in the fall. He met with alumni at several alumni gatherings in Virginia and North Carolina last
year and ended the fiscal year with an “End of School Year” celebration for alumni at the O.
Winston Link Museum in downtown Roanoke. The young alumni gathering took place around
Thanksgiving, and plans are being made for similar event this year.
While these social events have been fun and successful, the alumni board has been
implementing new activities (and improving on the existing ones) to engage alumni with the
school and connect with one another. To continue to move forward, we need your help. You can
help by reaching out and touching the school—dropping by for a visit, sending us news about
you or your classmates, volunteering to help the school with one of your talents in any one of a
number of ways, or attending an alumni event—and helping the school stay in touch with you.
But most importantly, anything you do helps the school and gives back to the community that
helped each of us when we were younger.
Barney Hammond ’82 is the President of the Alumni Board for the 2012–13 school year, and
I know he looks forward, as do I, to your involvement and participation in the North Cross
School Alumni Association.
Sincerely,

Letter from the Headmaster
Letter from the Board of Trutees
Last spring, I was asked by a friend how I felt my first year at North Cross School was going. I responded that I
could not have asked for a better first year. Truthfully, what we achieved during the 2011–2012 school year was
remarkable; and it could not have been done without the hard work and commitment of the entire North Cross
community. The renewed sense of dedication found at the board level, the many long hours put in by the faculty
and staff, the achievements of our students, and the loyalty and financial support of our parents made for one of
the most compelling school years in my 24-year career in education. I am deeply thankful for all that you have
done to help us begin the next chapter in North Cross history.
The 2011–12 school year was full of change and purpose for North Cross School. The
school experienced several achievements during the past year, including the creation of
many new programs such as world language five days a week in the lower school, the
creation of the Horace G. Fralin Program for Global Studies in the upper school, the
creation of the Early Childhood Program for students age three through kindergarten, and
increased technology in the classroom for all three divisions of the school. Several students
were recognized at both the regional and state level for outstanding performances and
skill in both the arts and athletics. The school community welcomed Christian J. Proctor,
Ph.D., as the ninth headmaster of North Cross School, and our campus experienced major
renovations to both the Carter Athletic Center and Eaton Hall. There have been positive
changes and growth to the school that has placed it in a position to experience success for
many years to come.
Most prominently, we have returned our school to financial stability, a fundamental achievement that will allow
us to expand our efforts to create a world-class independent school in the Roanoke Valley. We finished the past
fiscal year with a budget surplus of $180,000, a remarkable achievement. To put this into perspective, you must
realize that North Cross School had run budget deficits for eight consecutive years. In addition to balancing the
budget, we were also able to provide out faculty and staff with a four percent salary increase.
Our senior class once again distinguished itself with college admissions that included Stanford, Amherst, and
Georgetown. We are proud that recent graduates from North Cross School have now attended 14 of the top 20
universities in the country as ranked by U.S. News & World Report. I was pleased with our SAT scores: 22 percent
of our seniors scored over 1400 on the combined math and critical reading sections. Notably, nine out of these
ten students attended North Cross in lower school, a point of great pride for our lower school teachers.
The 2011–2012 athletic year was equally as successful with six of our varsity teams reaching the semi-finals
of the state tournament or better. Highlighting the year was our convincing victory in the state championship
football game over a team laden with Division-I talent. Individually, more than a third of our senior athletes are
playing collegiate sports this year and five seniors signed Division-I letters of intent to play. More than the athletic
success, I am pleased with the quality of our coaches and their understanding that athletics play an important role
in the total development of our students but not to the exclusion of our academic goals.
We remain committed to the arts as an integral part of a student’s education. With a six person Fine Arts faculty,
we are able to offer a diverse program that includes drawing and painting, graphic arts, three levels of choral
ensembles, and four levels of instrumental music. All of our lower school students participate in music and art, a
requirement that creates a talented pool for our middle and upper school programs. This past year we had nine
students selected for all-district chorus or band, and we continue to have students participating in the Roanoke
Youth Symphony Orchestra.
This past summer saw the completion of our Strategic Plan, a living document that will guide us through the
next five years or more. Our Strategic Plan walks the fine line between visionary and achievable, and I can assure
you that we are already hard at work in making it a reality. The pace of improvement and innovation will remain
rapid as we work hard to ensure our place as the top independent school in the region. We can assure you of this
commitment because of the meaningful support of our families and friends. For this, we are deeply grateful.
With gratitude,
Christian J. Proctor, Ph.D.

Recognizing the need to continue to build on this success, the board of trustees came
together in the summer with the goal of creating a five-year strategic plan. More than 40
members of the North Cross Community representing a broad range of constituencies
such as school administration, parents, grandparents, parents of alumni, and the
entire board participated on committees designed to focus and direct the growth
of the school in areas pertinent to its continued future success. The result is an
extensive strategic plan that received unanimous approval and recognition from
the Virginia Association of Independent Schools at their September meeting.
The school has experienced a banner year. All the successes of the last year were
achieved through a fiscally responsible plan that included growth to program while
maintaining a balanced budget. As Chair of the Board of Trustees of North Cross
School and parent of two alumni, I am excited about the future of the school.
During the 2012–13 school year, the board will continue to partner with the
administration of the school to execute elements of the Strategic Plan. Several
committees and sub-committees have already begun to meet and focus on
areas of school growth. We are committed to advancing this institution and
promoting its reputation as the best all-around academic choice in the Roanoke
Valley and beyond.
Sincerely,
Linda D. Frith

Letter from the Development Office
2011–12 Honor Roll of Giving
When I came to North Cross School seven years ago, I was excited to be part of an institution that was
dedicated to the work of advancing education in the Roanoke Valley and beyond. I was a new mother and
wanted to align with an organization that was focused on children and cared about their future. Over and
over again I have seen parents, alumni, grandparents, parents of alums, and friends of the school give of their
time and resources to make certain this mission is achieved. North Cross School is a place where children are
given the tools to succeed as students and as future leaders. Members of the North Cross School community
celebrate the successes of its students in academics, arts, and athletics and are consistently generous with their
resources to ensure the work of the school proceeds forward.
The purpose of the Honor Roll of Giving is to celebrate and recognize the generosity of each donor to
North Cross School. Through the leadership and commitment of donors, the overall school experience for
each student is enhanced. Our deep appreciation goes to all donors for enabling North Cross School to
maintain its position as the premier independent school in the Roanoke Valley.
In 2011-12, the development office processed gifts from donors that totaled more than $1.4 million. The
North Cross Fund brought in more than $335,000, which was the third largest amount in recent history. Our
fundraising events also experienced success thanks to the hard work put forth by the event chairs and amazing
volunteers. All total between Boosterthon, the Mosaic Online Auction & Gala, and the Olde-Tyme Family Fair
celebrating 50 years of Field Day tradition, events brought in more than $155,000 in net revenue with the Gala
being the largest single-day fundraiser in the history of the school.

Donors contributed more than $450,000 to capital improvements around campus. Phase two of Inspiring
Minds: A Campaign for North Cross School was completed and included a complete renovation of the
interior of Eaton Hall. Funds raised from The Connection Project, a campaign began last year to raise
money to improve technology on campus, have provided ActivBoards for the middle school, iPads for the
upper school, computer labs on wheels for the lower and middle schools, and increased wireless capability
throughout the entire school campus.
Last year the school also received more than $400,000 in grant money. Funds received from the Bernie Carter
Foundation, the Benedict Foundation for Independent Schools, Appalachian Power Company, The Foundation
for Roanoke Valley, and The Edgar A. Thurman Charitable Foundation were all used to help advance programs
and improve the facilities used by North Cross School students on a daily basis.
Once again the North Cross community has given of its time, talents, and resources to ensure the success of
this school and the fulfillment of its mission. The faculty, staff, and most importantly the students, are thankful
for your generous support.
I have been grateful for the opportunity to work with such a wonderful community of people and have
enjoyed my seven years in the development department at North Cross School. I am leaving North Cross
this fall to work for another worthy organization also focused on building character and leadership in
children. I consider it an honor to have had an opportunity to contribute to the advancement of this
institution and its important work in the education of children.
Thank you for all you have given and will continue to give to support the mission of this school. Your gifts
truly make a difference in the lives of the students of North Cross School — tomorrow’s leaders.
Sincerely,
Tammy N. Shank

North Cross School is an independent, coeducational, college-preparatory day school that serves children from early childhood
through twelfth grade. In all of its programs, North Cross School strives to promote in its students: scholarship and a love of
learning; character and a sense of personal integrity and responsibility; and a commitment to the good of the community and all
within it. Although we prepare our students to enter the finest colleges and universities in the country, we understand that such
preparation is of greatest use when it provides for our students the personal and intellectual skills to lead full and meaningful
lives. In all things, North Cross School endeavors to be true to its motto: Veritas Vincit — The Truth Will Triumph.
