THE RENAISSANCE 1. The word ‘Renaissance’ means ………. The era prior to the R. is known as the Dark Ages. The R. began in Italy during the 13th century. There are two principal reasons for this (i) (ii) Wealth (the importance of patrons) fall of Constantinople (scholars fled); refer to Ptolemy’s map 2. In the R. there was a development of the arts in the widest sense of the word. This development occurred in (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) (vi) Painting, Sculpture, Literature Architecture. Cartography [map making] Printing [Give examples in the above four points] 3. Whilst the R started off in Italy it soon spread throughout Europe. (i) (ii) Durer in Germany. Shakespeare in England [Prepare a short essay (14 marks) on both of the above] 4. Art: v. unrealistic; use of halo; mostly religious scenes but in R this changed radically; realistic, bright colours, background, perspective, sfumato; non religious scenes painted also now [Mona Lisa].
