Study for Unit 1 Test TBA: Beginning of Unit 2 Mr. Brown Westford Academy Chemistry Course Syllabus Welcome to chemistry class! My belief is to provide and guide you on your way of achieving a fundamental understanding of the subject of chemistry. I am here to instruct you on safety procedures, assign class work and home work assignments, and to assess you through different forms such as quizzes, labs, quizzes, presentations, projects, and (everyone's favorite) tests. My belief on all of my classes is simple and that is to engage my students and teach them to the best of my ability and also learn from them. Most of my students will not be chemists, but my home is that the content is taught and introduced in an interesting and exciting way. Grading: The chemistry course is graded on a total points system; there are no certain percentage numbers for tests, quizzes, etc. Some tests for example may be worth any numerical value such as 50,100, or some strange numbers such as 73 points. You are finally scored for each term on the number of points you've scored out of the total points that you could have earned. For example, if you scored 855 term 1 points out of a total of 1000 points you would have a grade for term 1 of 855/1000 = 85.5%. Student Responsibility Your responsibility as my student is the following: 1. Be on time or have a pass if you are not. 2. Establish respect for yourself, classmates, and myself. 3. Be a person of integrity, mature demeanor, and lead with honesty. 4. Have materials for class: a) Class Note Book, the process on how you take notes and learn is fully up to you. You are the best judge of how you learn best. b) Be organized in class and with your materials. c) Calculator that has log function and exponents (don't want to see cell phones). 5. Be proactive in your education and take an active role in asking questions and piquing your interests in school (even if it is material outside of school). 6. Work to the best of your ability and try with an honest effort the class and homework assignments. 7. Contact me for any reason if a problem arises or you foresee one coming that may affect your education in my class. Websites We Will Use in Class and Home Since we do not have a textbook for class our mode of learning from supplemental material will primarily be from the internet. This year I mainly use the following websites and please if you find any others let me know, I am always searching for different ways to approach subject matter. 1. www.chemthink.com 2. gpb.org 3. phet.colorado.edu Most of your computer assignments will be from these websites. Extra Help If you'd like any extra help the best time and place to reach me is: 1. Time: After School on the Days & 2. Place: _______________________________________________________ My Info: Mr. Brown cbrown@westfordk12.us Online Question Board For times in which I don't know or don't have time to answer some questions I'd like to establish an online or in class message board where questions can be asked and answered by students to keep our class momentum and understanding travelling at a good pace. Once you and your parent (s) have read and understood the syllabus I'd like you to each sign and date it at the bottom and return it to me.
