The vision of the GMLS is to develop successful leaders in management and international business by enhancing their professionalism, ethics, and communication skills. Some events for the Spring 2014 semester included a study abroad night, a joint job fair preparation session with the SCMA, and a number of guest speakers. The GMLS’ major activity of the Spring semester was the Passport to Entertainment. The event featured keynote speaker Bruce Meyer, who spoke about important topics on how to do business internationally. Additionally, there were 11 international performers, international food, and a silent auction that raised more than $700. Nearly 120 people took part in the event. Supply Chain Management Association (SCMA) The Supply Chain Management Association’s objectives are to promote supply chain management as a profession, engage members and non-members in activities that promote professional development, invite supply chain management professionals to speak to students about supply chain management, meet on a regular basis with Toledo-APICS and NAPM-Toledo, and support the educational efforts of the Department of Management and the College of Business Administration. The SCMA is affiliated with the APICS, and the Institute for Supply Management (ISM). APICS is an international organization that builds and validates knowledge in supply chain and operations management. ISM is an international organization whose mission is to educate, develop, and advance the purchasing and supply management profession. 2 The Supply Chain Management Association had a busy Spring semester, which included professional development meetings (including attending the SCMI/ NAPM-Toledo joint meeting), a resume workshop hosted by the BGSU Career Center, and a presentation by Jessica Olsen and Travis Trentment with Exel, a global 3rd party logistics provider. BGSU students also participated in the APICS Mid-Atlantic District case competition in Pittsburg in mid-February (thanks go out to the APICS Toledo chapter for helping to fund this event). Additionally, the SCMA is now participating in the “Adopt-a-highway” program on I-75 from mile marker 177 to 179. Supply Chain Management Institute (SCMI) The Supply Chain Management Institute’s (SCMI) mission is to build collaborative relationships with companies to promote excellence in supply chain management education and practice. The BGSU Supply Chain Management Institute held its spring dinner meeting on Monday Feb. 10th. Over 230 students, supply chain professionals, faculty and staff attended the event. The focus of the meeting was a panel discussion titled “Effective Internship Programs: Perspectives from Supply Chain Professionals and Students.” The supply management internship program at John Deere was highlighted by Mark Burton, Supply Manager, and Jodie Brand, Kyle Jacob, and Todd Lauer who have all completed internships with John Deere. BGSU Alumni Jon Gilberg and Kelsey Bolze, who are Contract Administrators with CACI, explained the internship opportunities in a service oriented company. Ryan Polk shared his experiences as an intern with CACI. The SCMI also welcomed its newest member company, Norplas, located in Northwood, Ohio. Norplas is a division of the global first tier automotive supplier Magna Industries. Derek Martzke, Materials Manager, explained that Magna products are used by every automaker in the world, and discussed the company’s decentralized organization structure and culture. The Fall 2014 SCMI networking dinner is scheduled for Monday October 13, 2014. Alex Shock Katie Post 3 Department News Dr. Bragg’s Retirement Dr. Daniel Bragg retired with Emeritus status from BGSU on June 1, 2014 after completing 34 years of service as a tenured Associate Professor of Supply Chain Management. Dr. Bragg’s service has helped to strengthen the programs in the College of Business and the Department of Management. During his tenure, he served on numerous committees at the university, college, and department levels. He served as the Chair for the Department of Management, the coordinator for the Supply Chain Management specialization and he was instrumental in updating departmental governance documents for the promotion and tenure process. Dr. Bragg was the primary faculty for the operations planning course. He was well known for his area of expertise in Excel spreadsheets and their applications for supply chain management problem solving. Over the years, Dr. Bragg provided instruction to numerous alumni who have prominent positions in their respective organizations. As he retires, he completes a distinguished career at BGSU and in the field of Operations and Supply Chain Management that will be remembered by all who knew him. New Administrative Secretary Kelly Meyer Starting in the Fall of 2013, the Department of Management has had a new Administrative Secretary, Kelly Meyer. Kelly has been a member of the BGSU community since 1991 when she joined the university as a student. She is a BGSU alumni, graduating from the College of Education with a B.S. in Special Education. Prior to joining the Department of Management, Kelly had worked with the Human Resources Office since 2002. She is originally from Painesville, Ohio, though she moved to the Bowling Green area as a student and stayed. Her favorite hobby is barrel racing horses with her daughter. Barrel racing has allowed Kelly and her family to travel all over the country. Since joining the Department, Kelly has enjoyed working with the wonderful faculty members in the Department, is thrilled to be back working with students, and is happy to be working in the College of Business, which she described as “a very welcoming and wonderful College to be in.” New International Business Minor Dr. Bragg (center) 4 With the help of Dr. Man Zhang and other College of Business Faculty, the Department of Management may soon be offering a revised International Business minor. The revised International Business minor would be geared towards both business and non-business students by requiring more basic business classes for non-business students, and more culture classes and international business content for business students. Further, the minor has been revised and now only requires 15 credit hours as opposed to original 33. The idea behind the revision of the International Business minor was to make it easier and more attractive to BGSU students with business and nonbusiness majors. EMOD International Trip to Paris From May 12th to May 16th of this year, the EMOD program sent students that are taking the Global Organizational Development class to Paris for the first time. They joined French and other International Resource Management students to discuss and learn about talent management and organizational development. BGSU’s EMOD program teamed up with the French University, Insitut de Gestion Sociale, for the trip and class. Activities included seminars, lectures, receptions, visiting the US Embassy in Paris, taking part in a French/American team scavenger hunt in the Louvre, and visiting United Airlines & Hyatt Hotels to learn their HR processes. BizX 4000 GE Project The incandescent light bulb as we know it is in decline as consumers demand more efficient and longer lasting light bulbs. GE Lighting has been in the lighting business since the advent of incandescent Department News (cont.) technology and has sustained a strong business model over the years. In the Fall, GE worked with BGSU’s College of Business Administration to offer students an opportunity to learn how a successful company develops concepts for the capabilities of intelligent light bulbs and market them to consumers. The Senior Applied Business Experience (BizX) 4000 course is a hands-on, experiential course for seniors in the business college. The course provided seniors with a unique opportunity to learn from a Fortune 500 company as part of a significant realworld project…the company’s development of “the next big thing” in light bulbs. Digital Marketing – came to BGSU to kick off this project with the BizX 4000 students. During the two-hour presentation and discussion of this real-time case study, the executives charged the students with being creative and thinking “outside the box” in suggesting what an intelligent bulb should do to meet the needs of future households and fulfill current unmet needs. The company understands that Millennials, young people born between 1980 and 2000, will soon be creating households and buying light bulbs. McVeigh says that a number of their employees are BGSU alumni, including their President and CEO, Maryrose Sylvester, which motivated the company to connect with BGSU. “We were really impressed with how quickly the students picked up on the trends and what is possible with LED technology. The teams provoked some interesting thoughts on what features consumers might want to see from a GE intelligent light bulb. We were equally impressed with their presentation of ideas and final reports. The whole experience was a win win for GE and Bowling Green.” Steve Briggs, GE Global Product Management leader. Real Time Service Learning Dr. Cady’s Executive MOD class, worked with an OD firm, Elucity, to prepare collaborative strategic road maps for the School of the Arts at VCU (highest ranked among public universities). Students worked in competitive teams throughout the Spring semester, presented draft design proposals to get real time feedback, and then the client picked the best final design in an online “live fishbowl” setting. Other Department News BizX 4000 Students giving their presentation BizX 4000 Students giving their presentation Three executives from GE Lighting - Steve Briggs, GM, Global Product Management; Mike McVeigh, ERP Process Leader; and John Villanueva, GM, Frank Kozak, an instructor in BGSU’s Department of Management, taught the BizX course. “Engaging with a leading company facing a tremendous industry transformation is an invaluable experience for these students. The case study enables them to apply the business skills they have gained during their education in the College of Business in this realworld situation,” says Frank. The GE executives said this collaborative project with the BizX classes was a good experience and would like to do it again. Dr. Sullivan presented at the “Beyond the Boundaryless Career” conference in London England in May. Dr. Hokey Min served to the Midwest Decision Sciences Institute (MWDSI) as the President. He served that organization as the Treasurer for the past two years. As the Co-program chair, he also planned the MWDSI conference in Chicago during April 11-13. SCMI and the Supply Chain Management Association cosponsored the case competition. The seven teams of students presented a case they prepared to judges and a live audience. First place honors went to graduate students Zachary Bourdon and Stephen Hagerman. Zach is pursuing a master’s of applied statistics and Stephen is a full-time MBA student. Second place went to Zach Hunnell and Scott Zacharius, while third place was awarded to Chelsea Folk and Kramer Joseph. Each team had two weeks to analyze and prepare a 12-minute presentation on the Harvard Business Case, Interior JV. Teams were judged on depth of analysis, quality of recommendations, their presentation skills, and professional- Zachary Bourdon & Stephen Hagerman ism during questions and answers. BGSU Team Competes as Finalists in International Case Competition A team of four BGSU students was the only U.S. representative to compete in the final round of the 2013 International Institute for Business Development (IIBD) Case Competition held at Hong Kong Baptist University in November. The BGSU team of Ashley Lochtenfeld, Luke Zemanek, Amanda McAuley, and Bryant Sheppard competed against collegiate teams from Canada, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. During the final round, the teams were given six hours to analyze a case and develop a presentation. The case was on Green Ladies, a secondhand trendy fashion shop in Hong Kong that is positioned as an eco-social enterprise. Although the BGSU team was not selected as the winner, this was a great opportunity for BGSU to showcase the outstanding talent we have in our business program. Luke Zemanek described his fantastic experience. “Traveling to Hong Kong was a once in a life time experience... Not only did we get to compete in an international competition, but we got to experience a very different and diverse culture!” The case competition team coach is Dr. Janet Hartley, professor and director of the Supply Chain Management Institute. BGSU Team in Hong Kong BizX 4000 GE Case Competition (see Department News section for discussion of the project) As part of the GE Project in the BizX 4000 class last semester, the students were divided into 12 teams for a case competition. Each team submitted their marketing plan for GE Lighting personnel to review. From these 12 teams, GE Lighting selected the top four plans, with these teams presenting their marketing plans to company executives during finals week. After the presentations, the five GE representatives chose the team composed of Mike Harmon, Joe Budynkiewicz, Stacie Heitmeyer and Jordan Hammond. This team suggested a product called “GE Spectrum,” a two-piece light bulb, a base separate from the bulb to provide customers with options. The GE Spectrum would give a “basic” economy option with the ability to provide Wi-Fi, on-off cycles, and temperature controls. The next level up, customers would add a sensing element such as a smoke detector and carbon monoxide detection with premium options offering all of these elements plus color changing abilities for healthier lifestyles. GE awarded the top team with a $1,500 scholarship, the second place team a $1,000 scholarship, the third place team a $500 scholarship, and the fourth place team GE Case Competition Winning Team with GE Representatives a $250 scholarship. 8 Selected Faculty Publications • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Bragg, Daniel, “Using PowerPoint Animations to Teach Operations Management Techniques and Concepts,” Decision Sciences Journal of Innovation Education, 2013.
