ANNUAL REPORT - Home of Guiding Hands

2011
ANNUAL REPORT
I
t started as a dream for several local businessmen in the late 50’s and early
60’s and became a reality with the beginning of services for individuals
with developmental disabilities on the Lakeside campus in 1967. The
dream was a chance for education, a chance to enjoy what we all take
for granted and a place to learn a path to independence and self sufficiency in
an environment that focuses on each individual’s ability – not disability. This
is what HGH stood for then and this is what we still stand for today, over 40
years later.
Today, Home of Guiding Hands is one of the largest providers of supports
and services in San Diego County for children and adults with autism, Down
syndrome, cerebral palsy and other developmental disabilities. These few
businessmen truly paved the way and made a difference. Since our founding in
the early 60’s, new milestones and accomplishments have been achieved every
day. What was originally thought of as impossible is now a part of everyday life
for the many individuals and their families supported by HGH each year.
We at HGH are extremely proud of our past accomplishments and are looking
forward to many more years of continued excellence in providing quality
services and supports to those who count on us every day.
Despite the best efforts of the economy, HGH once again had another
successful year of providing positive outcomes for the individuals we serve.
We accomplished this through the hard work and the attention to detail of
our 450 staff, hundreds of dedicated volunteers, numerous Board Members,
community members and most importantly – you!
I want to once again assure you that I am dedicated to complete
accountability and efficiency. I want to make sure that each donor
dollar and every penny that comes into HGH is spent wisely, helping
to create the quality of life that we all strive for. I have thoroughly
enjoyed my first year at HGH and look forward to the opportunity
to meet each of you and continue the successes we have enjoyed
for over 40 years. I continue to be impressed by our staff and their
enthusiasm and professionalism. You have my commitment that
HGH will be a forward thinking contemporary organization that will
continue to enhance the quality of life and to provide quality services,
training and advocacy for people with disabilities, their families,
and others in our community.
If you have any questions or would like to learn more about
HGH – my door is always open.
With warmest regards,
Mark R. Klaus
Executive Director

Planned Giving
T
hroughout HGH’s history,
government reimbursements
have not covered the actual
cost of services provided. Donations from generous families and
supporters make the difference in
the quality of life for those we serve.
Megan and Chris Hinman
New Beginnings at HGH
H
ome of Guiding Hands’ resident Megan Hinman moved into the
Ventana Home two and a half years ago and in that short time
has blossomed into a more independent and confident young
woman. House Manager, Maria Rhoan is very proud of Megan’s progress
and says, “Megan made a very smooth transition to Ventana. She enjoys
her housemates and loves Lulu, the house dog. She looks forward to our
coffee social twice a month and likes to visit with all her friends.” Megan
especially loves her birthday, and every year her favorite clown (and
family friend) Anna Banana makes a special appearance. There are lots of
balloons, presents and cake, and everyone gets their faces painted! This
year Megan turned thirty, and her father Chris planned a big party with
friends and family.
Megan is involved in the house chores, and helps to clear the table after
dinner every night. She also attends a local day program in El Cajon. “It has
made such an improvement in her verbal skills,” Maria Rhoan said.
The warm family atmosphere at the Ventana Home and the care Megan
receives gives Chris peace of mind. “It impressed us how long employees
have been working there. We met a lot of people that had worked for HGH
for many, many years. It tells me that they are not only good employees,
but that HGH is a good employer,” he said.
When Chris and his late wife Laura began looking at residential living options for Megan a few years ago, they felt that “One of the most important
things in choosing HGH for Megan was the fact that it was a community
supported organization that had been around for forty plus years, and we
felt confident that it would be around for another forty years,” Chris said.
“Megan seems to be very well adjusted to life at Ventana” Chris says. “We
are very pleased with Home of Guiding Hands”. L
HGH cannot predict the number and
amount of annual gifts it will receive,
and there is no guarantee year to
year that these donations will be
sufficient to meet the needs. Therefore, HGH established an Investment
Account/s (sometimes referred to as
an endowment fund) to sustain the
organization on a long term basis.
It is intended that the investment
account will grow to generate earnings sufficient to meet the annual
funding gap between program reimbursement rates and operational
expenses. Building the endowment fund is of utmost importance
to ensure the needs for those we
support are continued to be met.
You can make a difference through
your gifts including a gift of stocks
or bonds, real estate, and individual
retirement accounts. You can balance
your personal financial goals and your
interests while realizing significant
tax benefits through effective planning. Various types of planned gifts
are possible from a simple bequest
in your will to a charitable trust. Have
your gift join with similar gifts from
others that will ensure a strong future
for Home of Guiding Hands and the
people we serve. People who choose
to support HGH in this manner automatically become a member of the
Heritage Society, and receive additional recognition.

Randy Jones’ 5K for Independence
T
he first Randy Jones 5K for Independence was a success, raising over
$15,000 because of generous sponsors,
participants and volunteers that believe in

Santee Lakes on Saturday, February 19th despite the morning rain showers.

awards to
top finishers.
Randy Jones, former San Diego Padres pitcher
and National League Cy Young Award recipient, welcomed participants and started the
race off. Volunteers cheered on the race participants as they completed the 3K/5K course.
Over 55 HGH residents were also able to partake in the fun. Randy Jones awarded the top
three male and female finishers with medals
and gift bags. The event was a hit and will
now be a yearly event! We look forward to
seeing you at Santee Lakes next year on Saturday, February 18, 2012. Save the Date.
